The PS5 exclusive muscled out strong competition from Resident Evil Village, Crusader Kings 3 and Microsoft Flight Simulator to secure the award.

Best Game is the second Editor’s Choice Award Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has won this year, with it also picking up the Best PlayStation Game category.

The game is a colorful, family friendly sequel to the much loved platformer series that debuted on the PlayStation 2 many moons ago. During testing it won over Computing and Gaming Editor Ryan Jones, offering a heartwarming plot and excellent platforming and combat gameplay.

“Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is one of the best entries in the series yet, with gripping chaotic shootouts, exhilarating platforming, and a charming story. Thanks to the extra firepower of the PS5 there are lots of next-gen upgrades to enjoy, too, from the jaw-dropping 4K visuals to the immersive DualSense feedback. This is a must-buy for PS5 owners,” wrote Jones in his Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart review.

Hmm well for me so far it is honestly cruis’n blast. No joke.

However, i’ve not played any native ps5 games yet like re8, ratchet, returnal etc. as i’m waiting on sales. Not played metroid etc. either yet.

uhm... the year isn't over, first of all...

and Metroid Dread snuck in last minute and completely WIPED THE FLOOR with every other game!

I mean..... no not really... at least not from a critical or sales perspective.

Also this is kind of like how "tax years" work, there is a cut off point sooner than you would think for GoTY's and where already in the 10th month of the year, but likewise games released in the latter half of 2020 would have been considered for this year's award too.

uhm, first of all, fuck 90% of game critics...
but if you wanna go that way, Rift Apart is at an 88 metascore and Metroid at 89... so Metroid wins the critics point.
user scores are 88 for Metroid, 87 for Rift Apart.
also sales? uhm the game is brand new on the market, so who knows how much it will sell? it does sell pretty well so far for a 2D full price game.

Yeah, but this is still a bit early. Typically GOTY start rolling out in late November, IIRC. But smart move by these guys. Why wait until the headlines are drowning with GOTY announcements? Do it early and get all the attention themselves.

I believe the cut off for these are earlier than when there actually announced to give the panel time to be picked and "deliberate" before the announcements. I feel like these guys probably just skipped a few steps there to get it out early as you said.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is my current game of the year but there's still 2 1/2 months left in 2021. I really hate these early awards as it makes no sense.

Nobody would care about what this no-name website would have to say if it did NOT award a Sony or Microsoft game for GOTY.

But it's only October... Anyway, loved Rift Apart but so far Metroid Dread is my GOTY, hopefully it doesn't get snubbed from most lists for being a "simple 2d" game.

Nice, it’s definitely One of the fist games I’ll play when I get a Ps5!

For me it’s going to be a tough choice between Metroid Dread and Psychonauts 2. I’m leaning a bit towards Psychonauts 2 though.

Yeah Metroid Dread is my GOTY as well. But Ratchet was my GOTY before Dread so it’s still okay. The lack of blood in a big budget AAA game combined with a Swedish localization with voice acting good enough to be in a Pixar movie made it one of the best playthroughs I’ve ever done with the kids. I want more of that! ❤️

Still, I hope The Game Awards is nominating Metroid Dread. I don’t expect it to win the actual GOTY but it needs to get some award. It’s like a love letter to old gamers like myself who grew up in an era when devs wasn’t afraid to have the gamers scratching their head trying to figure out what to so. Some of the best boss fights ever made. Possibly the best controls ever. One of the best metroidvanias ever, only rivaled by Super Metroid for me, which it could actually surpass by the time I’ve reached the finish line, still a few hours left here.

I would have given it to Returnal, but Ratchet is a close second. Dread would have been my third choice.

Can see why they are doing it so early. Beside the usual end of the year shooters (which are not worth to be considered for GOTY, imho), there is nothing really relevant left for the year.

I can’t. In my timeline the year of 2021 started Jan 1st and ends in Dec 31st. Are they going from October 2020 to October 2021? Or are they going from Jan 2021 to Oct 2021 and skipping all late year releases?

I’m okay with it. Though I’m a big fan of Ratchet. I also haven’t played it so I can’t judge for sure. IMO mine is RE8 though I’m one the biggest RE fans around.

Fantastic game. I loved every second of it. It wouldn't be my choice, but I can see why someone would choose it. Great job.
