Switch OLED durability test rates its screen 2/10 for scratch protection

A durability test of the Nintendo Switch OLED’s new display has suggested that it has little protection out of the box to scratches and damage.

YouTube channel JerryRigEverything sacrificed an OLED model Switch to find out exactly how durable its new display is and found that, despite Nintendo claiming the screen is made from glass, it appears to be as vulnerable as plastic.

In its scratch test, the channel found that Switch OLED only has screen protection of 2/10 and encouraged users to purchase a screen protector for their hardware.

“Unfortunately, what we’re seeing here are scratches at level three and deeper grooves at level four, which means this new OLED screen has a surface layer of plastic,” it said.

“It’s good to know that the OLED screen is soft so that we can avoid putting it in situations where it can be damaged by coins, keys or other metal objects.”

Nintendo has said that the OLED screen is made from glass and that a plastic film included on top of the display is intended to stop glass from scattering should it shatter.
And I'm sure he had an Amazon affiliate link to a screen protector for them to buy,

I tested it today with Metroid Dread (in a Game store), and it was better but too close to the original switch to buy it. In a week I would be used to the new screen and what it would remain is the same dated piece of hardware I already have.

There are plenty of Switch OLEDs in stock on Amazon UK today.

Almost a year after launch PS5 and XSX still unavailable - I think they're the unicorns!

This. Plus it was a $50 price jump for a console with 5 year old outdated components. If the regular switch dropped $50 and this replaced it at it's current price range, I'd honestly still be on the fence. Include one or 2 games, a memory card, and maybe a pro controller and you're probably exceeding the price of a Xbox Series X or PS5 ... which is ridiculous.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
I put a glass protector on mine, really surprised how much the screen makes me like the switch better. It’s like all screen with controllers attached to it. Balls deep in animal crossing again after 1.5 years :messenger_tears_of_joy:

you are so full of crap, every store within 100 miles of me and within 100 miles of my brother is sold out completely, please share these google results you have that show the switch oled is readily in stock as I can't find any evidence it is in stock in stores anywhere. And maybe the xsx and ps5 would be on store shelves, if you know sony and ms actually had retailers send them to stores instead of holding inventory online only.

Well you on the other hand are assuming that everybody lives at USA, yes? Because "stores anywhere" literally means the whole planet earth.

And Switch have been super easy to buy on some countries, since the launch of original version.

Same deal with oled in my country, I could literally order +100 units right now, and I have also seen them on multiple different stores. So, it is in stock on stores.

Claiming that something is not stock or is stock is kind of pointles, if/when there are huge differences between countries and within countries.

Considering PS5, that thing is almost literally sold out on whole Earth, considering Series x, that thing is mostly sold out, but available on multiple countries. Considering series s, it have been available since the launch on multiple countries.

Considering switch OLED, it have been also available on some countries on stores + online without big issues.

So, there isnt just "one truth" about console avaibility, unless it is like PS5 which is probably the first console that is sold out on the whole Earth for so long. Even original switch could not archieve that, because it never sold out on some countries/areas.

Scalpers are selling these at cost after fees and taxes. They're either routinely available in stores, or there's not significant demand for them.

Availability seems to be fine. Initial week I couldn't get one but then I got one from GameStop online last Friday. I went to my local WalMart and there were two sitting in the box and have read many other similar reports.

Won't be putting a screen protector on this as I find them to be a waste of money. The only reason I would get one is if I gave or gifted a device to a kid who may drop it, to prevent it from cracking from being dropped. Getting a screen protector to prevent "micro-scratches" is nonsense in my opinion - the micro-scratches will just appear on the screen protector, and then you have micro-scratches and the quality of the screen is degraded by the screen protector. I have never been able to notice small scratches when a display is on. Also to prevent deep scratches, just pack your Switch sensibly away from any hard material.
