Windows 11 vs. Windows 10

Windows 11 seems fine so far. I had a couple of minor crashes but those programs seem to be fine after updates. Obviously I haven't done a lot of gaming in it yet, but nothing blatantly off so far. I will say that it was a pain in the ass to get the installer to run on one machine. It took a little back and forth from BIOS to OS. It implied I needed secure boot enabled in the BIOS, but apparently I did not.

I tend to update sooner because these things used to be a major hassle that I just wanted to get over with. Apart from having to change BIOS settings for features I couldn't give 2 fucks about, my 2 updates were smooth.

No reason to get 11 now. Wait a year or so.
Are you referring to the VBS drop or the negligible differences between the two?

I almost feel like Windows 11 is a totally unnecessary upgrade, and one that no asked for. It shows no significant advantages over 10, other than some security improvements. How Microsoft manages to continually take one step forward and two steps back is a question for the ages. I'll eventually install it, but I just don't 'get it'.

Do you have yo pay for it? I already have windows 10 is there an option to update to 11 ? How does the upgrade process work?

Been running Windows 11 since July without a single issue.

There's really no reason not to upgrade if you're interested in doing so, as they share the same core architecture. Any gaming performance differences on systems sharing the same settings will likely be within margin of error.

I was so hyped for Windows 11, but the more I see (and hear) about it, the less I like it. I'm going to hold off for a few months and see if they can get some kinks worked out, and possibly bring back some stuff I loved about Windows 10 (like easier audio output switching, and customizable folders in the Start Menu).

My thoughts exactly. W10 serving me well on my current device; hearing the issues with W11 I think I'll wait until early next year before updating, at the earliest.

A common sentiment from a lot of folks is that it seems to feel faster than W10 but I also wonder what displays and setups they're using. I'd think it's the same system as the W10 device but for some they could've gone from a 60Hz display to a 120Hz one which is going to automatically make UI responsiveness feel snappier by default.

I also hear W11 is more lightweight on system resources, which is always a plus. But if issues persist with it and for whatever reason W10 stops getting stability/security/driver updates, I may just have to foray into the Linux dimension. Hopefully won't need to do that tho, not in the mood to learn a whole new OS and check if my programs are even compatible.

Both. Win 11 is pretty much just like any normal app update you'd get and its no longer something huge or big of a deal like from xp to 7 or 7 to 10.

Been running Win11 for a month now, with all the early bugs - nothing alarming and the latest update fixed the taskbar "glitching".

I've tested Adobe CC, Blender, a lot of emulators like Yuzu, CEMU, RPCS3, Duckstation and new games like Kena, Hot Wheels and old games like Deus Ex and Silent Hill 2. No problems whatsoever - actually everything runs better or just as good as in Win10.

It feels like a lazy update coupled with a few bad business taste decisions in a few key areas to me.

Lazy as it's not sitting far from Windows 10 kernel-wise but they just decided to roll out some beta GUI projects into it and call it a different OS, that doesn't include the new file explorer they've been developing for years or even the current file explorer with tab support which they had working then nuked. It literally brings nothing to the table, in fact it removes more stuff than it gives out.

It really shows that up until early this year, I don't think they had decided to release a new OS.

Also lazy some things were becoming buggy, or had been for years and they clearly didn't want to fix them so they removed them. Things like, moveable windows taskbar, the new news taskbar applet wasn't working properly anywhere but in the default position, so they removed the option to move the taskbar altogether. I don't appreciate the widget and I would turn it off anyway even if I didn't use the taskbar on top (which improves workflow, due to less mouse travel distance to do anything), so this has done nothing from me. On the taskbar topic, they also removed showing date and time on multiple screens which is something I don't understand. Star Menu itself doesn't seem better with it's rounded corners and centered location.

More questionable are the stupid requirements that require a PC built after 2018 (that's worse than Apple's 5 year rule of minimum support, and reasons all too transparent during right to repair, global warming, lower carbon emission awareness times) that and crippling file history in order to sell more onedrive stuff. And at this point Windows should have a Office Suite Lite embedded, bring back Microsoft Works or something.

Lots of lost opportunities, control panel of old still lives, it's just Windows 10 with some dumb requirements on top. and I'm getting the impression attach rate/people wanting to migrate is quite poor this time around. I've seen no one hyped yet. People were hyped with Windows 10, you had to wait for months or force the installation, this time around they're are hounding me to upgrade on two computers at the same time.

Can anyone help? I had my PC custom built from ibuypower 2 years ago. I9 9900k, EVGA 2080ti, 32GB RAM. When i run the PC health check, it says i cant upgrade due to TPM2.0 not being supported. I follwed the steps and went into the BIOS, and the security setting doesnt exist. Any advice would be appreciated.

Google: "name of your motherboard" enable TPM.

So far loving Windows 11. I initially hated it because there was this horrible window dragging bug where if you attempted to drag one window from one screen to the next it would freeze, your mouse would get duplicated, and your entire PC would become unresponsive for about 30 or more seconds. I recreated the issue 15 times back to back.

I can report that this no longer happens to me after updates.

Setup is

Ryzen 7 3800X
Rog Strix x570-e gaming motherboard
Corsair Force MP600 1TB NVMe
64GB of Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 3600
AMD RX580 (the wimp of my setup) lol. I had better than this GPU, an RTX 2080, but then I gave it away thinking I'd definitely get a RTX 3000. How foolish I was. :p

I prefer Windows 11, but I can't believe they shipped it without updating the default apps. It's incomprehensible how a company that big can do something like this.

No reason to touch Windows 11 for me yet. I'll wait for official Android app support and Directstorage to release then i'll bother. For now it's just Windows 10 with a buggy unfinished skin

I'm not a fan of the new start menu and "widget" thing. Only widget I use on 10 is weather, and I like having that in start.

My start menu in 10 is configured like the classic start menu with documents, pictures, music, etc.

The round edges are nice, but not worth losing the start menu for me.

I hope Valves push to Linux will make it less janky/ghetto so I can just switch to that.

11 seems so unnecessary. Microsoft first wanted 10 to be the last version number ever and just keep updating it continuously. But then they realized that this means there would never be buzz and attention again over a new major version. So they came up with 11. Just a fancy looking service pack

Yeah I've used that when windows 10 first came out. I'd rather not have to run an additional thing to get my start menu unfucked for a lack of a better term.

I use start all the time, as I keep my desktop bare except for recycle bin. Major programs I use like Brave, Steam, VScode, WSL, etc are pinned to my task bar, but everything else I just grab from start.
I have everything i need pinned to my taskbar - even the recycle bin. I only use start to search and restart/shutdown - which it does perfectly fine.

I didn't even think to put recycle on the Taskbar.

I've got too many programs to move away from start though. I also like the instant access to a weather tile.

Im looking forward to direct storage and if windows 10's patched in direct storage can hold a candle against win11 without the new storage methods of w11, also directX 13 will for sure be a win11 only feature i guess.

I think Windows 10 is the best Windows ever. I have little issues with it. I mainly use my M1 nowadays but I still have a Win 10 notebook that is useful for certain things (like downloading files etc). Might update it soon.

Vista were the worst Windows so kinda confused here.

Not really. I think its revisionist history. Vista was too heavy when it launched but really fine on a Core2Duo onward, esp after the service pack. It was a MUCH better experience than XP we still used at the office. XP and before it are really archaic when using post Vista. Vista SP2 is essentially the beloved Win 7.

I think Vista is better than all Windows before it, just too demanding when it launched.

Vista was SUCH AN IMPROVEMENT over XP. People loved W7 because they skipped Vista, but most of the cool stuff in W7 came from Vista anyway.

Back to topic: Did a clean install for W11 on my 5700 XT / R5 3600 PC. Works just as fine as W10. Played DX9, DX12, Vulkan and PCSX2, RPCS3 and Dolphin. Everything works just as fine as they did on W10.

This is good to hear. I use my two monitors to drag and drop frequently. I'll update to Win11 in another two weeks or so. Gotta wait for my BAT to get in my wallet first.

Sidenote - I know you're hurt after giving up the 2080. GPU market has been quite the disaster. But look on the bright side, you're closing to those Lovelace and RDNA3 GPUs!
