PlayStation Now - PS4 1st Party Games

So I went ahead and looked at PS Now's entire library.

Currently, there are just 29 PS4 games from Sony that are permanently available.

I'm not counting PS3 / PS2 games.
All of these games are native PS4 games / ports.
All can be downloaded on PS4 / PS5.
None of these games list any future date that they will be removed.

Not an especially great or big list, but it does have a few great games.

CAT8mZN.jpg

I then made a list of all of the Sony PS4 1st party games I could think of from the last 8 years.

There are of course more I didn't list here, but as you can see, Sony is holding back the majority of their own games from their own service still. Shows how half baked Sony's own commitment to their service is, and the potential there is to bolster the service in the future. They have a lot of good games waiting to be added permanently.

Yes some of these games were added temporarily, and then removed, but that's not the focus here. And yes, currently, The Last of Us Part II is available on PS Now. It's only temporary and will be removed at the end of the year, as they have done with other games.

Like currently, none of these PS4 games are on PS Now
- The Last of Us Remastered
- Uncharted 4 / Lost Legacy / 123 Collection
- The Order 1886
- Shadow of the Colossus (remake)
- The Last Guardian
- Infamous First Light
- Gran Turismo Sport
- Ratchet & Clank
- Days Gone
... and many more. (Like Knack 2)

And there are no 1st party PSVR games on PS Now. None.

9hGehnO.jpg

So this shows that 1 - Sony barely gives a fuck about PS Now and its still carried by 3rd party games and PS3 games, and 2 - Sony could easily flip a switch and just throw almost all (or all) of their PS4 games onto the service... if they ever want more people to give a shit about it.

TLDR - SONY ... ADD KNACK 2 TO PS NOW

Always been puzzled that even their older catalog is always added for a few months only.

Do those games even sell that much a couple years after their release? I guess they do or it makes no sense.

This is why I always wait for a discount before signing up. £2 a month is a pretty good deal even if you only play one game a month. I’m looking forward to Desperados III. Most of the first party stuff I bought years ago.

Or they help us not go down a future that will see us owning 14 different rental services to have access to the game we want.

Get rid of PS Now and just make great games that are worthy of purchasing.
I have no issue with sticking to the normal business model.

I was just sharing my thoughts on the current status of Sony 1st party on PS Now.

Makes no sense to me that most of their games aren't on the service.

Nobody is still buying Matterfall or The Order 1886, etc.

I got it cheap so I have it, but I very rarely use it. Same situation with GamePass, although I did play Psychonauts 2 there.

The vast majority of games I want, I just buy day one. Both services have tons of games that I love, but I've already owned them for months or years.

This is a good post.

It's puzzling why Sony doesn't add some of their older PS4 games like the Uncharted games, Ratchet & Clank, or The Order: 1886.

They've had the PS3 Uncharted games on PS Now for several years, but never bothered to "upgrade" them to the PS4 versions, like they did with several other games (e.g. Heavy Rain, God of War III, Dead Nation). At one time you could argue that the PS3 versions of U2 and U3 had a rightful place there, since they used to have online multiplayer modes, but Sony shut down those modes a couple of years ago. I can't think of any good reason why they shouldn't put the PS4 versions up there now.

I'd also suggest that they should go back and add a bunch more PS2 games, first-party and third-party. There are just so many great games of the past that could have an opportunity to shine again.

Decrease in quality of games, especially good single player games, as main goal will be to keep users paying as long as possible.
Also testing waters for a streaming only future.

No thanks.
There will never be a streaming-only future because it's highly inefficient to run everything in a datacenter. It's much, much cheaper to get people to buy a dedicated device to run a game on natively.

PS Now could be as good as GamePass if they tried a little harder. Theres a lot more shovelware on there. U can't download the PS3 games. Theres like no PS2 or PS 1 games. Navigating it is a mess.

My 1 year sub just ended last week. It was good. But so many of the big games, i already owned. So i mostly used it to try out PS3 games i always wanted to try. But streaming quality was hit and miss. Sometimes it was good. Sometimes it was unplayable.

that reminds me i need to buy Enslaved on Xbox. just tried it on PS Now and liked it

There's one BIG reason. Sony really doesn't want to change their customer's behavior so much that we all expect the last smash hit to be on PSNow in 3 or 4 years. They want us all to buy the game.

This is clearly where some big players want to go. It was said the same for movies and series and look where we are now.

Not even talking about the inevitable clustering of subscriptions.

I think all it needs is to support more countries and also to be available on iOS and Android devices.

And in addition to this download only (without sreaming) cheaper tier available worldwide that would allow you to play locally the PS2 an PS4 games included there on PS4 and PS5.

Maybe they don't add the Uncharted and Ratchet games because they still sell or because they plan to re-release them for PS5+PC. Maybe they don't add more PS2 games because nobody plays the ones they already there.

In addition to the permanent titles they also include some the other games temporally, providing them 'fresh' new content every future month and helps them using FOMO to get some subs.

Their main business isn't PS Now at all, it's to sell games instead. So there is no reason for them to have absolutely all their games there.

Report me if I continue to console war
A lot of these games have been on PS+,play at home and the ps5 game collection and are old which makes the service not really worth it. Needs fresh content.

There are several streaming gaming services. Can you point out the lower quality games caused by those services? Has any of those serviced announced any plans to be streaming only except for the ones that were only that way? If we are using PS Now as an example didn't it go from being streaming only to allowing players to download games to their PlayStations? Isn't that going the opposite direction of your concerns?

This also helps make the case for some sort of combined Now and Plus sub. Most of the “missing” PS4 first party games are either part of the PS Plus Collection or have previously been part of PS Plus.

Last of Us Part 2 is currently on PS Now.

I would be interested in buying a year to cross off some PS4 games I missed. I reserve some concerns.
Why aren't there any games for the latest console?
How do these games interact with my old saves and dlc for PS3 and PS4 games?
How does this interact with my current ps plus sub? I also now only have dualsenses so I hope these all work.
Good thread btw.

Yeah I can see that point, it’s a business decision in the end. But then you don’t benefit from the catalog effect where your service just gets better and better value over time.

Right now it seems PSNow is mostly kept in order to have something ready in case the market turns more towards subscription services in the future.

Because fortunately it's not working for them and new stream-only entries failed. But the push for it is clear in, some cases more than others.

Regarding your last question: can you download PS3 games on the newer consoles? Will you be able to download Series only games on One systems?

Not seeing the signs means being blind or accepting the future to come.

- No PS5 games yet is likely due to them also being required to stream with PSNOW and Sony probably haven't set that up on the backend yet
- Not sure with PS3 as it saves to the cloud, but if you download a PS4 game it acts the same as purchased - so your own saves and DLC are available
- Not sure what you mean by interacting, but PS+ isn't actually required for PSNow at all - multiplayer games on PSNow are playable without plus

Where is Ghost of Tsushima? Sony needs to bite the bullet on this one and follow MS lead. All 1st party games day one.

No why would they release 1st party day 1? They said that model doesn’t fit them.

Along with Nintendo they are making millions/billions selling there 1st party games and its there bread and butter.

Releasing it on PSNOW a year afterwards, I do understand.

They don’t need to follow MS’s lead because they aren’t the industry leader and we don’t know how much they are making/losing. Whereas Playstation and Nintendo are making a killing with there 1st party games

On consoles streaming seems to present ways to play that otherwise wouldn't be available. The Switch has a few games that gamers would have missed out on if streaming wasn't an option. Hard to see the problem there.

With regard to PS3 games not be downloadable that is on Sony. They apparently didn't see any value is expanding their backward compatibility beyond the PS4. On Xbox you won't need to download Series games to X1 because again streaming allows gamers to play games that aren't even native to the platform. Again I don't see this as a problem. It is an option gamers would miss out on entirely. I like not being required to buy certain hardware.

Seems to me like accepting the future means more and more games are going digital and streaming is a part of that. To declare that these trends will cause the end of gaming or that game quality will suffer seems highly dubious at best. There has been no indication that game streaming services affects game quality. If the service isn't worthwhile people don't have to subscribe. If people are subscribing it would seem to indicate the value and quality IS there.

Sony is getting all their success the traditional way. People are buying their games.
Also, the fact that GamePass exist, means that people will expect a service exactly like it, and Sony doesn't want that.

Who knows what the future holds for PS Now. IMO, it doesn't need to exist at least in the state that it currently is.

Seeing how PSNow and GP both are stalling and Luna and Stadia failed, it seems value is not there. This makes me feel a bit better.

I really don't want to go full retro, only because people don't see the danger of such services.

I don't think PS Now and GP have anywhere near the same number of subscribers. The value may not be there with PS Now but GP seems to be doing quite well. Regardless they are optional services and I'm glad they are presenting options to gamers. You going retro is a small price to pay for a multitude of gaming options being available to the masses. That seems far more important. There is nothing 'dangerous' about digital distribution, streaming, or game subscription services especially if they are optional.

You might sell your PS5 if they offer their first party games through their gamepass like service day 1? You would be playing that game on PS5 anyways.....

There is no reason they can't do both. If MS proves gamepass is viable and attracts enough buyers, Sony will absolutely do the same.

Yeah when MS sells more 1st party games and makes a profit from gamepass they might follow. Until then, Nintendo and Playstation will carry on selling 1st party games as there model is working great

What is that supposed to be a chart of?
How to read the chart:

Between June 2019 and June 2020, PS+ gained on average 675,000 net new subscribers every month ((45M - 36.2M)/12).

Then the same for other indicators except PSNow in 2021 where there is no official data yet. Basically all sub services are growing, not stalling.

What’s funny. PS now is probably more profitable than gamepass. Gamepass is using the HBO Max model. Spend alot of money putting movies day one to get subscriber growth high. Sony on the other hand is kinda like Disney. Why put our big movies in there for pennies for subscriber growth when we make more selling tickets. Disney has a bunch of back catalog and throw a new show in there every 3.5 months.

Sony isn’t adding old titles at a good rate. They should be adding a large amount of back catalog. Large amounts PS1 and PS2 titles with filters and simple emualtor mods. Like resolution upgrades. Buy titles from other companies and remove licensed music. Require a Spotify or Apple music plug-in to put the music back. Sony needs to treat PSNow like a startup. Add large amount of casual content. Fall Guys, Among Us, Jackbox, Sackboy Etc. EH.

What is that supposed to be a chart of?
I think subscribers not stalling. But the chart shows they are lol.

I disagree they are stalling, but thats not what the charts shows to me.

NOW they are optional, like PS+ was optional, but became more or less a requirement the moment it was tied with online play. And why was it tied to online play? Because someone else was doing the same and nobody had a problem with it.

For you, and others, such "options" might be attractive right now, but are shortsighted regarding the probable consequences of them.

Nioh 2 is first party?
It‘s published by Sony Interactive Entertainment on playstation excluding japan. So Yes? No?

Nioh logo is a trademark of KOEI TECMO GAMES. So it’s not like death stranding.

Sony probably holds publishing rights to sequels for playstation. If Sony were to pass on a sequel then then publishing rights would probably revert to Koei to shop or keep.

Thanks for the update. I've just bought a year now.
I was thinking like how gamepass and gold can be combined/upgraded.
Now I wait for Knack 2 and the order.

Uh.....ok. Looks like a chart of a lot of data that we don't have.
Think what you want to think then but the Sony data is sourced here:

MS data is based on their growth rate from the SEC document (so pretty official) and the base numbers for 2021 are the ones zHugeEx is using. If you think he’s off just remove whichever percent you are comfortable with, it would still show tremendous growth.

Or ignore the numbers and make up your own reality, I don’t mind at all.
