Facebook Oculus Quest Is Being Rebranded as Meta Quest

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

As part of Facebook's new rebranding initiative, the company has now announced that it is retiring the Oculus name. Instead, the popular VR device will now be called the "Meta Quest." The announcement was made in a post by Facebook's VP of AR/VR, Andrew Bosworth. Bosworth went into great detail about how the new name is meant to emphasize the importance of the company's VR device in its vision for the future. Bosworth also claims that the decision to drop the Oculus name was a difficult one, but the goals for the company remain the same.

"VR will be the most immersive way for people to access the metaverse and as we look toward our goal of bringing 1B people into VR, we want to make it clear that Quest is a Meta product. For this reason, we're simplifying our brand architecture and shifting away from the Oculus brand. Starting in early 2022, you'll start to see the shift from Oculus Quest from Facebook to Meta Quest and Oculus App to Meta Quest App over time," wrote Bosworth.

"We all have a strong attachment to the Oculus brand, and this was a very difficult decision to make. While we're retiring the name, I can assure you that the original Oculus vision remains deeply embedded in how Meta will continue to drive mass adoption for VR today."

That's dumb. Oculus is a much better name. Who coined the "Metaverse" and how long ago were they shot?
Quoting from Wikipedia:

The term was coined in Neal Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash, where humans, as avatars, interact with each other and software agents, in a three-dimensional virtual space that uses the metaphor of the real world.

...and no, you don't get to shoot Neal Stephenson.

A funny thing about zucks keynote was he thinks epic are "partners".

Sweeneys endgame is the metaverse too, he been talking about for about a decade and fortnite is there entry way.

So epic and meta are competitors.
Meta wont want people using quests to log directly into the fortnite/epic metaverse and epic wont want to be a seperate app inside zucks metaverse.

Maybe they are the only two who really enjoyed PlayStation Home and Second Life.

Maybe lol.

But im a believer in the metaverse, it will revolutionise the world, office jobs, euducation, therepy and retail could all be done virtually.

The only issue is that it will take 20years and several breakthroughs to make VR good enough for it to be viable.

Yes, I agree. I think it will be done in 10 years. In 20 I think we'll start to have Elon Musk's brain stuff where you'll connect your brain to a fast ass Internet and won't need controllers (will use your brain instead), VR helmet (PC or console hardware will be in the cloud, streamed, and you will play the visuals and audio in your brain/eyes/ears).

You may be correct. But if you look at the progress since Facebook aquired oculus seven years ago they have made rather slow progress and in some areas they are actually going backwards.
I think the tech has to be brought back to the drawing board because VR will never be big if it becomes uncomfortable after 30mins.

Cool, now we can all live in a delusional fever dream cribbed most obviously from dystopian science fiction and misleading or outright fabricated virtual reality product pitches from the last decade.

Oculus is a nerdy name, but at least it means eyes so it makes sense for a device that you put on your eyes.

I don't care for the name. Just give me that Project Cambria with pancake lenses, eye-tracking, face-tracking and controllers with its own camera for tracking.

Won't look as good as DriveClub.

EPIC/Tencent... just so we know who is stirring the pot.

dummy.
At least it's closer to their true goal. It should be rebranded as metadata, because that's what they're after!

Facebook was never part of the "original vision".

facebook all but completely destroyed and sold out the "original oculus vision" by taking steps backwards with hardware and concerning themselves with trying to strong arm the entire industry into "liking" VR by creating cheap sub par headsets.

the "original oculus vision" was focused on nothing but progressing VR itself with people like carmack working directly with hardware/engineering aspects, sure carmack is a supporter of mobile VR, but their work was not tied up and limited. that's why he and so many others left oculus.

Meh, branding is whatever. OR and OQ are awesome VR devices, but the need to have a FB account to use one is a dealbreaker.

But the broader, underlying problem: Meta is not a trustworthy company with any of its products or services (largely because the Zuck inspires no confidence that his technologies and corporate vision offer solutions to improving society as opposed to harming it).

The only other entity I’d be more leery of in the tech world is Tencent.

FB account is no longer needed according to FB. Not that I need one for my Oculus Rift S, though.

Thanks for the tip. Just googled it and saw the news stories in the last day or so nixing the requirement.

Still, Meta’s trustworthiness is nonexistent. I want to love Oculus, but I think I am committing to PSVR for my VR gaming needs. Hopefully it interacts with PC in some way.

Tag, you're it.
So yeah, in the end Facebook buying Oculus was the worst that could happen. The original vision isn't there anymore. Too bad, I liked my Rift.

This sounds fucking awful to me lol. As if we don't have enough problems with people today spending too much time on social media, incels, trolls, weirdo's like the Reee bunch. Going to be even worse once people can just live in this virtual world and don't need to interact with the real one. Still 20 years from now I'll be in my 60's and old, so meh.

I'll just be over here yelling at clouds, don't mind me :messenger_tears_of_joy:

i mean yeah its corny but its the best fitting name for what it appears they are tying to do, which is turn FB into a meta/virtual platform for anything you want to do (im assuming a lot there, but thats the gist)

in a year..

meta being sued in each country,
huge damage to brand..

let's change our name

With microsoft no longer seeing VR gaming as a money making opportunity, and Facebook literally giving up on the occulus brand, it seems that VR gaming is pretty much dead. It is just a matter of time before valve and sony throw the towel as well.

If it reaches level player one level of tech then it may not be too bad, because at least people can get exercise and social interaction in it will have some benefit, because it will be a more genuine social interaction then communicating using the internet today.

But this will take vastly better tech, VR really is in it bbc micro computer level of evolution.

Oculus is basically the only VR brand with widespread brand recognition among the public at large. Seems crazy to burn that, but of course I expect "Meta" will be a household name soon enough too, so they'll survive. Beyond that it's pretty symbolic. Oculus was always a Facebook brand.

This whole thing kind of feels like an inversion, making Oculus the "parent" company to Facebook rather than the other way around.

This is a super dumb take, at least with regard to Facebook.

Whether you believe in VR's long term success or not, this is obviously Facebook quadrupling down on VR, not abandoning it. They are making VR their "main" thing, and social media the "subsidiary" thing. They are literally rebranding the whole company around VR.
