Don't buy a Steam Deck, wait for Deck 2

I'm buying it.
I think it will work well enough as a simple portable PC if I'm not using it as a gaming machine.
Or, even if it cannot run any games - I could use it as a bathroom Steam Stream machine... so no issues for me.

I don't see why not, if not from Valve by another player such as GPD or Aya Neo. But honestly I can easily see a Deck 2 release as we will get RDNA3 Zen 4 and etc. Once more next gen only games release on PC Valve will know what to improve to get these games running.

You can't claim such a thing. People would hold off for something that may never exist. And even if it did, when?

If sales are disastrous for the first generation of a product, would there be another?

I would buy a steam deck of it was available in my country same as the steam link and controller. C'mon valve...

It's going to be a groundbreaking device and force all those Chinese companies to up their game. I'm tired of those handhelds struggling with N64 emulators ffs...

Uhhh, yeah, it's a PC. Your whole argument is the same as people who never upgrade their PCs because something better will always come out the following week. It's unavoidable, there is never rarely a "good" time to buy a PC.

At least PCs you can plan ahead a bit and upgrade your CPU and especially GFX card. Steam Deck is more like a laptop -you're paying extra money to shrink it down and be locked into the configuration.

If you want to jump back into PC gaming after a lapse, I wouldn't wait to get a Deck. If you already have a gaming PC, it's really tempting to wait for the next version. If I was able to play Game Boy games on my NES, I certainly would have been willing to wait for the Game Boy Color.

Not to be an echo chamber, but Steam Deck 2 wouldn't exist if the first model doesn't sell and do well. That's just the reality of it all. Much like we saw with the Steam Link and controller.

I personally wanted to preorder as I love Valve, but then I decided I'd just wait as I don't really have an absolute need for one. But if that changes, I'll definitely support.

Indeed, I wouldn't "jump back into PC gaming" by buying a deck. But whether the hardware is locked or not, it's still a PC where you can configure the software to the appropriate hardware level, generations just don't apply. A deck 1 will mostly still run PC games from 2030 as long as the user is comfortable playing them on the lowest settings possible at an appalling frame rate. OP's argument for waiting is just the age old "not a good time to upgrade" fallacy.

You can always say wait for the next. My worry would be that Valve drop support for it and it's dead within 12 months.

As ridiculous as OP is, this is also a ridiculous justification for not waiting.

Everyone needs to decide for themselves if it’s worth buying right now or not. Buy it if you think it’s worth it. Nobody is going to be persuaded to buy something they don’t really want in order to encourage the development of a next gen product.

Steam Deck is gonna have to do EXTREMELY well for there to be a #2. Valve's Hardware history isn't very promising even if they tech they actually release is really great. IF more people accepted OP's mindset, you'd more than likely set up yourself for massive disappointment. Get the hardware to play things you want NOW. NOT for the potential things that COULD happen in the future.

I guess, but the more I think about it the more I wanted Steam Deck for games like Street Fighter V and Monster Hunter World. These games are at the end of the lifecycle and the sequels will release within the next 2 years, so I will buy a Deck once those sequels release. If Deck 1 cannot handle those games I'll skip it. If Deck 2 is out and can run those games I'll get that. Getting a Deck just for legacy games is just not appealing for me, but I understand for some it is appealing but I just cannot see myself play games like Street Fighter V and Monster Hunter World when the sequels are out so that would mean if I bought a Deck I'd only get like 2 years out of it.

Not a chance!
2026 at the earliest, if it exists at all.

It all depends on if tech is ready. Mobile tech continues to improve hear by year. Fall 2023 will be 2 years after the original Deck, even fall 2024 will be 3 years after the original Deck. That's plenty of time for huge improvements in mobile tech.

Finally around 2023 is when next gen only games will kick into gear we will have things like Starfield already released. Street Fighter 6 will most likely release in early 2023. Monster Hunter World 2 will likely be fall 2023 early 2024. Ureal Engine 5 will start being used more around fall 2023.

After reading this I'm just gonna wait for deck 3. Or 4. There's always something better to wait for.

The computers in ten years time will easily handle emulation of modern systems, so why not wait for them too? What do you plan to do in the meantime? Besides, you're dreaming if you think we will get a cutting edge pc in handheld form at this kind of price. The other handheld PCs you mentioned are almost double the price. You could buy a Steam Deck now, and another one in a few years and come out even.

Incidentally, I don't understand the desire to only play the newest game in a series. If it's strictly iterative, like sports games where you want the updated roster, sure, but most games are still just as good after a sequel releases.

I don't think you understand the concept of timing.

A generation lasts around 7 years with a bit of cross gen for extra added years of support. Why go by console generation you ask? Well 90 percent of games release target these consoles. So the smart thing to do is ensure the device you are buying can handle that generation, or else by the time the sequel for your favourite game releases you will drop it. Of course this is if you only insterested in Deck for legacy content then I guess my OP doenst matter but I'm talking strictly about buying a Deck to run games from this current generation.

If Monster Hunter World 2 and Street Fighter VI come out in fall 2023 that's only 2 years you get out of Deck. If you just wait until these games come out and bought a Deck 2 around then and the Deck 2 can run those games you would get atleast 6 years out of a Deck 2.

I am sorry but i think you have absolutely no concept of timing.

A new console generation started at the end of 2020, using an AMD ryzen/rdna2 APU - guess what the steam deck uses ? Yep same components cut down to work in a hand held factor. Perfect timing by Valve, fits right into the current generation - but no lets wait because some new game will require some hypothetical new hardware spec, we know nothing about the games coming out in a couple of years or their requirements, but trust this guy and his big brain logic.

The fact you actually then try to convince us your logic is "genius" is just:

Not trying to be classist here but ffs, the penny pinching on the OP is something :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Of you're buying a handheld you're never going to get any top of the line performance. It will always be a compromise between heat dissipation, battery, cost and performance on the machine. Raise one and all the others get impacted.

It's also kind of stupid to look at this as "generation", like we're talking consoles. If anything talk fabrication nodes or cpu/gpu architecture changes (e.g. tick tock approach) to time your purchase.

If you really want to maximize your enjoyment vs money spend do this:

- pre order and get it day 0
- enjoy it to the fullest
- once new iteration is announced, pre order new version
- sell current version

Way better than holding out years of enjoyment to save on $100 to $200 :messenger_winking:

edit: pre ordered mine and it's due to arrive next month :messenger_sunglasses:

I wholeheartedly agree.

Exactly. I honestly really want one, but I know that with my lifestyle, I'd barely use it, which is why I didn't preorder.

Yeah, I've never heard of someone buying something to encourage the development of a later model, lmao. If you want it, you get it. If it does well, more iterations and models will come, that's all there is to it. Lol.

Hear me out.

The main reason I want to buy a Steam Deck is to play my games portable. Games like Street Fighter V, Monster Hunter World and Assasons Creed would be nice go play in short bursts. I can play Assassin's Creed to grind and do side missions. Monster Hunter I can quickly get in a game and do a hunt, or collect resources. With Street Fighter I can have some quick casual matches online.

The probpem is I won't be interested in these games as soon as the eventual sequels come out. Street Fighter VI, Monster Hunter World 2 and etc, we don't know how well they will run on Steam Deck. This generation is taking a while to get going due to chip shortage and covid, so will likely go on for a while. We need to wait atleast until 2023 to see the proper sequels of the big games. And by then mobile tech will continue to improve and I'm sure a eventual Steam Deck 2 will release in 2023/2024. Yes you can easily say then why not wait for Deck 2. Well it's about timing if the eventual Deck 3 can handle next gen only games and you get one around 2023/24 that should carry you throughout the entire gen which most likely will last a long time. However I just can't see the Deck able to handle next gen only games. So the Deck will most likely be a system for legacy games and cross gen games.

Edit
for people with joke posts about buy a Deck 3, Deck 4, Deck 5 etc

Of course this is if you only insterested in Deck for legacy content then I guess my OP doenst matter but I'm talking strictly about buying a Deck to run games from this current generation. Yes technology always gets better however with consoles they have fixed technology for around 7 years, and the lowest hardware in this case Series S will be targeted for 7 years.

If Monster Hunter World 2 and Street Fighter VI come out in fall 2023 that's only 2 years you get out of Deck. If you just wait until these games come out and bought a Deck 2 around then and the Deck 2 can run those games you would get atleast 6 years out of a Deck 2.
According to the leaked Capcom schedule of their games for the upcoming years, SF6 was listed there as crossgen multiplatform game. So if it's the case and it runs at 60fps in a base PS4, will run fine in Deck 1 as SFV does. SF6 was listed in that early 2020 document as a late 2022 game, so considering covid I assume it must have been delayed to early/mid 2023 or so.

Capcom also mentioned they want to push their PC sales, and since most of the PC players have mid/low tier hardware, I'm pretty sure their other upcoming games will be really flexible to run them in older PC hardware. So it's pretty likely that they will run fine in Deck 1. Regarding Deck 2, even Valve doesn't know if they will release it. And if they do it, when they are going to release it.

I assume Deck 1 will perform well in sales and they will release a Deck 2, or that at least there will be some more powerful 3rd party handheld PC released after Deck 1. But I don't see Deck 2 being released 1 or 2 years after Deck 1, I think they will take some years more.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

You're not wrong. The Deck will be a cool device for playing most current games on the go, but it will suffer greatly once the PS4 generation is left behind and games start being made with the new consoles as the baseline.
