CGMagazine - Zubi Khan - 9 / 10

Shin Megami Tensei V is an excellent Switch exclusive worthy of its name, with the game feeling like the natural next step in the long-running series while introducing new elements that elevate it above even its contemporaries while not straying too far from its roots, offering fans a must-play experience and for everyone else, a JRPG worth jumping into.

Digital Trends - DeAngelo Epps - 4.5 / 5 stars

Shin Megami Tensei 5 is yet another gem for the Nintendo Switch that every JRPG fan needs to check out.

Gamepur - Junior Miyai - 9 / 10

I have now spent over 50 hours playing Shin Megami Tensei V — a game that I adore, but also one with a few faults. This RPG on the Nintendo Switch will bind you in its tangled, storied web of angels versus demons, of power struggles to see who will take the Throne of God, but the web is marred by some unfortunate navigation and technical issues.

GamingTrend - David Flynn - 90 / 100

Shin Megami Tensei V is a masterfully made JRPG and fascinating work of art. While the characters could have used more fleshing out and the leveling curve is wildly uneven, it's still incredibly fun with thrilling combat and a gripping plot.

God is a Geek - Chris White - 8.5 / 10

Shin Megami Tensei V has a deep and satisfying combat system making every fight a challenge, as well as an engaging story and great visuals.

Hardcore Gamer - Adam Beck - 4 / 5

Shin Megami Tensei V is one of the best RPGs of 2021.

Hey Poor Player - Kenny McKee - 4.5 / 5

It’s not a stretch to say that Shin Megami Tensei V has set a new standard for JRPGs. It’s amazing to see how far along this series has come since the initial inception of Megami Tensei, and the fact that ATLUS can continue to improve the series without compromising its core features. Shin Megami Tensei V has been a long time coming, but the wait has absolutely been worth it—and I’m more excited than ever to watch the SMT franchise continue to grow.

IGN - Leana Hafer - 8 / 10

Shin Megami Tensei V's excellent JRPG combat and deeply rewarding customization shine bright, even when it sometimes feels like Persona without the heart.

Nintendo Life - Mitch Vogel - 9 / 10

Shin Megami Tensei V is a modern masterpiece. It successfully delivers on all the aspects that have made the series thus far so popular with fans-namely through its high difficulty, heavy narrative themes, and expansive team-building options-while polishing up and tightening the weaker aspects. Things like a more easily navigable map and more difficulty options to cater to players of all skill levels comfortably make this the most approachable entry in the series, and it feels like there's more things to do in the world than ever before. If you are at all a fan of RPGs or have been looking for a good entry point into this oft overlooked series, we would strongly encourage you to pick this up as soon as you can. Shin Megami Tensei V was worth the wait, Atlus has successfully stuck the landing with this one.

NintendoWorldReport - Donald Theriault - 9 / 10

Now that we've finally closed the book on the 2017 Switch presentation, I think Shin Megami Tensei V might be my favourite game to emerge from that show. That's not a comparison I make lightly given the other games that appeared that night, but for my money and time it was worth the wait. Pokemon might be ending the year of RPGs on Switch, but SMT V is the best monster catcher for your buck yet.

Prima Games - Lucas White - 9 / 10

If I could describe the latest MegaTen joint with one phrase, it would have to be “a lot.” This game is a lot.

Wccftech - 9.5 / 10

Featuring a new approach to exploration and extremely solid gameplay, Shin Megami Tensei V masterfully balances innovation and tradition to offer an excellent JRPG experience. While the technical issues can get in the way, the game's quality is so high that most will be willing to look past them, as Shin Megami Tensei V is one of the best entries in the series and one of the best JRPGs released in 2021.

Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 9 / 10

Shin Megami Tensei V is pretty much the sequel that fans have been waiting for. There are a few potentially controversial decisions, such as the emphasis on an open-world area instead of the franchise classic dungeons, but they ended up working out in the end. The gameplay was fun from start to finish, and the 40-hour runtime seemed to fly by thanks to excellent pacing. If you liked Nocturne but wished it were more modern, SMT5 is the game you've been waiting for.

Why do people keep bringing up Persona 5? Stop. Accept they are different branches of the same series Just stop...

They are meant to be different, every single sub series under SMT umbrella is to only use the demons and fusions, the rest is up to what is the focus of the specific subseries. Stop wanting every game to be Persona 5. Grow up

Is Opencritic just asleep at the wheel. Still has a question mark for reviews.

. . .because relative to Persona, this is a niche game. That's not a commentary on the quality of either it is just a fact; Nocturnes release on on STEAM came and went. P4Golden and P5Strikers both were very popular (again relative to SMT) when they came out. Accordingly, it isn't a surprise that people will reference what they know, particularly given that at their core they have fundamental mechanics shared across the series. For people who haven't played SMT games, going from Persona to SMT can be quite a tone whiplash (I experienced the opposite going from SMT to Persona 3 and thinking "What in the world is this?").

Well, seems he's not wrong.

Pretty sure that's a lady. Unless it's someone else doing the voice over (like Easy Allies likes to do).

Really good reviews, so far. Can't wait to get my hands on it next week. SMTIV was a lot of fun, and the story was decent. Really hope this next entry has more fleshed out characters instead of "I am the chaos guy!" and "I am the holy guy!"

I bailed on Persona 5 pretty early on after getting tired of all the endless dialogue.

Been playing Dungeon Encounters for weeks now, so I'm ready for a gameplay-first approach that isn't wasting a ton of my time.

That's how I felt about Persona 5 too, plus combine that with the calendar system that I hate and it isn't fun for me to play those games. Gameplay focused, darker in tone plus hopefully cool music and I am way more excited for SMTV already.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife

I think both Persona and mainline SMT are both cool for different reasons, but man, some of those reviews talk more about Persona 5 than the game they are actually reviewing.

I think you'll really enjoy this game, I used to think JRPGs were boring but SMT's combat made me realize otherwise.

All those reviews are telling me is that the game must be nothing like SMT IV: Apocalypse, which is good news since I really disliked the tone in that game.

But I’m glad they bringing the combat improvement from Apocalypse like Skill affinity and Hama/Mudo skills doing direct damage.

Yep, I loved those improvements too! Do we know how Hama/Mudo insta-kill now? In SMT IV:A it was when you were smirking, but now?

carlosrox carlosrox next one I'm afraid.

Its still worth doing the occasional Mahamaon in older games even without damage, just for the lulz

If anything PC but what was the last SMT game that wasn’t on a Nintendo platform? Nocturne? I would be very surprised if this came elsewhere

My bet: It'll definitely go elsewhere in a quicker timeframe than it took Nocturne to leave PS2. I have a feeling that SJ, SMTIV, PQ, Devil Survivor, e.t.c. stayed faithful due to being dual-screen experiences, so ports would have to be tailored with a little more effort. SMTV doesn't have the same issue.

If you ask me, tho, a game like this seems way more comfy in portable.

One think happy about doing damage is Alice’s “Die for Me” skill is now actually useful against bosses.

What does "Persona without the heart" even freaking mean? What a useless descriptor, typical of what I'd expect from the quality of reviews these days from the so-called "professionals"
It means that people who haven't played Persona 5 won't get anything useful out of that shitty review.

Also not hot bath scene, I guess. :goog_relieved:

I’m glad SMT5 is getting positive reviews so newcomers can give it chance but I personally don’t need reviews to tell me SMT is worth playing, I played this series long enough to already know it’s worth it.

I'll give it a go one of these days, but with FFXIV Endwalker on the horizon, I just don't have the time commitment.

Damn, still buying the game since for me gameplay is king. I just hoping for a more detailed story and a more fleshed out cast like the Persona series
It has detail story but you not gonna get entire section dedicated for one character development like you do in Persona.

I have the Limited Edition preordered, so hopefully they won't cancel it or deliver late like with Metroid Dread.

Then again, I probably won't be able to play it right away, as I'm still neck deep in Kingdom Hearts 2, and I think it'll take a while to beat still.

On topic, I have high hopes for SMT5. I loved SMT4 on 3DS, but never could get into SMT3 when I played on PS2. Just a few morr weeks.
