Compared to a lot of f2p games I've played in the past it is far more friendlier to free players, especially if you're mostly just interested in the quests and storyline content. Been too busy / doing other stuff so I haven't played in the past few months, but I got through pretty much the entirety of the available quests and main storylines (up to the end of the Liyue chain) running free to play with only 4 star characters. Game was reasonably generous with rewards and gems for Adventure Rank level ups and quest completions. That said once I had ran out of quests and was mostly doing dailies to level up characters and weapons the rewards and free gems did slow down considerably.
If you're looking to go far in Spiral Abyss, get particular 5 star banner characters and weapons, or level cap a bunch of characters though it is hard / long slog playing free, so that is where the gacha really got pushed / tempted. Not sure if Spiral Abyss has been tweaked since then, but I wouldn't be surprised if I found out that most of the people who were able to fully clear all of Spiral Abyss were hardcore whales in order to get a ton of cap level characters to get through all the floors.
Free gems and pity pull counting give you a chance to get a character or weapon you want if you're patient and frugal, but it isn't a guarantee that you'll get the banner advertised 5 star even if you hit your pity. Throw in the fact that the weapon and character banner pity counts are separate and it is a lot harder / slower to get a 5 from both since you pretty much have to pick hitting your pity on one or the other. Then there is the whole aspect that duplicate characters unlock special abilities / perks and it takes rolling them 6 additional times to fully cap their constellation. That is where it can get really expensive, so I'm not surprised Genshin raked in that much revenue if they had enough people willing to drop a lot of cold, hard cash on "perfection".
