No Time to Die *** Massive Spoilers ***

Saw it again yesterday, tried to pay extra attention to Safin's motivation but they literally forgot to explain what his whole point was after he killed off Spectre.

He wanted Spectre dead because they killed his family. He spared Bond because Bond was not his enemy. That was solid motivation.

But after that his motivations seem to whiplash from "killing this evil organization" to "commit genocide on a global scale" to "starting a family with Madeleine and Mathilde for some reason" but also "sell the weapon to whoever that were on the boats" [why? how? what's the plan here? Didn't seem like he needed any money, he seemed Bezos-tier rich anyway].

Such a bizarre thing to forget in a movie script, lol.

Yeah i didnt get most of Rami's motivations either, ok Spectre killed all your fam, you got revenge and stole the Brits secret bio weapon to use on who exactly and to sell to whom and for why.. you seem to have a shitload of cash why do you want more.. also why do you want to poison and kill other peoples families after your own was horribly taken out, maybe it was explained but i missed it

Title of the movie had a grammatical error:

No! Time to Die

I was beaten to the punch.

I wasn't a fan. Turning bond into a wick-esque killing machine for scene after scene after scene really devalues the spy aspect of the craig era.

I liked the increased gadgets.

I'm VERY confused about almost all of the plot. What did Remi Malick do with blonde lady after he pulled her from the lake? Was he 15 at the time? How was Blofeld able to talk through the eye while in prison? How was Remi able to plot so intricately with NO ONE ever even suspecting his massive infiltration of both MI6 AND spectre? Isn't this the second time Craig has fucked off to a tropical island after a boo-boo? What "secret" did blonde lady even have? She had no idea Remi was even involved till he showed up in her office, right? So what info about his secret not so secret base could she have given and how did Blofeld know ANY of this from jail?

I'm just gonna watch up to Blofeld from here on out, maybe through the Norway forest. I liked the Felix send off and I hope Ana is code name Felix from here on out and isn't a lesbian, just a normal cishet straight woman who is able to resist bonds charms, surely money Penny can't be the only one.

The movie definitely requires some mental gymnastics to connect certain dots, its third act is pretty messy.

Safin saved little girl Madeleine and just, you know, let her go. The reason he looks practically the same 25 years later is because he uses gene therapy on himself [I had to look this up, the movie makes no effort to explain the insane age gap].

Blofeld's eye is just a dumb McGuffin. It's a bionic eye with an internet connection, basically. Like many of these movies' techno babble it's best not to overthink the mechanics of the eye.

Madeleine's "secret" is that she had a kid and didn't tell Bond. Blofeld knew because he's Blofeld and knows pretty much everything [previous movie deals a lot with Spectre gathering intelligence on an insane scale]. Not an earth shattering secret I guess, but I suppose Bond was never to find out. Remember that Blofeld's entire motive is to "ruin James Bond's life", nothing more nothing less. Dude is petty as fuck. Blofeld probably also knew that Madeleine was saved by Safin as a kid, but how that is in any way a shocking secret is beyond me.

Movie was ramping up for some great intrigue but completely dropped the ball in the third act by making the antagonist's motivations extremely unclear and also not delivering on any of the narrative setups.

felt like the beginning action sequence was the best part kind of wanted more action but I guess there had to be more dialogue since this is james bonds goodbye movie... teared up with James Bond getting killed at the end I really liked daniel craig james bond movies. same feeling I got when hugh jackman stopped playing wolverine. gonna miss em.

Also, was the girls "mosquito bite" some kind of tracker?

I got so many good vibes from the film, even Lynch was tolerable, I wish they had cut some of the sub plots.

MI6 feels so small as well. Like it's M, Q, and moneypenny with like 1 00 agent at a time. They should have at least referenced other 00s and had some at the wake. Hell, I would have gotten all the "almost bond" actors and fan favs like Idris Elba just for fun. I don't really like Bond teaming up with other 00s since their skill sets overlap and they just end up being additional shooters instead of nuclear physicists, pilots, pearl divers, or other useful things :p

Where the hell did you find all this out?

I figured blofelds ramblings were actually code to someone with access to his cell footage but that wasn't the case.

Jesus fucking wept they killed Bond...

Why?

I think they may go with a 007 spinoff with the black girl and if it bombs (more than likely) they'll then reboot a proper James Bond movie, but even still they really didn't need to kill him off especially after him finding out he had a daughter, other than that it was a decent show, ranked for me..

Casino
Skyfall
No time to Die
Quantum (yes I liked it)
Spectre
I don’t think they are going to reboot with the black lady. This continuity is over. The new continuity might have Ralph Fiennes and Ben Wishaw (like how they kept Judi Dench from the Brosnan movies). Hell, i wouldn’t be shocked if they had Judi Dench be in the next continuity.

Why didn't the bad guys just stay locked up in the control room instead of coming out one at a time to let Bond kill them?

Why didn't anyone bother to search Blofeld from head to toe before locking him up? I mean, this is supposed to be the most dangerous criminal in the world?

Why didn't Bond just jump into the ocean to avoid the missles?

So many plot holes in the movie in the end it just got too much for me to bear.

For me the best scenes were the really long opening sequence and the fishing boat escape. Everything else was meh or just John Wick jerky camera gun-fu.

British prisons, even high-security ones, are notorious for smuggled goods. A mastermind like Blofeld could easily persuade a bent screw to bring in mobile phones, etc. It’s not explained in the film, but I’m speculating as to that’s what happened.

Why didn't Bond just jump into the ocean to avoid the missiles?

Bond wanted to die, so why would he jump in the ocean? He’d worked out he’d never have a life worth living as he’d only ever be putting Madeleine and his daughter in danger of being exposed to the nanobots. Rather than face a life of solitude without the two girls he loves, he kills himself and destroys the island in the process.

For those clamoring for a female Bond, I'd rather they create a whole new character say, 009. Build a shared universe ala Marvel and have the occasional crossover event/villain. I'd say that's win/win.

All in all, solid fun. Some glaring plot holes in terms of the villain's ultimate motivation, and where did those two high speed boats go? But yeah, really didnt feel like a 3 hour movie. Oh shit, let's pour one out for Felix who died again too. How many times is that now for his character? Feels like he should be approaching Kenny status.

I think they can easily get away with reviving Bond thanks to the DNA/nanobots technology in No Time to Die, a.k.a. cloning. You know, one of M's top-top-secret side projects.

Maybe he'll step out of a blue phone booth.

Jk...

I think their killing him was an awkward but relevant response to global politics, they said a bunch of overt stuff about people howling about "freedom" being sheep to their rabble rousers, the bad guy said he and Bond were two pointless heroes who brought themselves to this impasse, Bond did the only thing a good contemporary hero could do: wordlessly shot the bad guy then killed himself.

Heroes don't solve anything. Because half of us will kneejerk hate them just to feel like mountain folk and half of us will quietly appreciate them. No problem can be resolved by one single action.

Better for the people poisoning the earth to just shut it all down, rather than try to prove who the good guy is.

---

I think they'll bring him back, i saw it suggested that it might be a prequel kind of treatment, but yes, James Bond died on that island on that date and that's that.

I mean haven't people long suspected it was a code name? So someone else could get the name.

---

Regardless, cool things:

- Shia theBeef wishes he took roles as seriously as Remi Malik.
- the gunbarrel quickdraw scene being worked into the movie was fucking genius
- bond's fight up the stairs towards the end was genius
- i couldn't help being nonplussed by the fact that bond fell madly in love with someone about 20 years younger than him
- also nonplussed at the Malik casting because he's absolutely the wrong age to be who he was to Seydoux' character.
- i felt very 5 years ago when i saw that German actor from all those Tarantino films hamming it up again
- still prefer Seydoux in death stranding
- i liked how the second bond chick was only on screen, boobs out, for like 10 minutes, kicked ass and was told "good job!"
- i like how the American was vacuous, ridiculously inept, just about managed to get used for one unhelpful and ineffective job, and died a pointless death, in contrast to save the day tattoo-ass American dude from Goldeneye.

Bond needs bad guys to kill for plot to continue

The Blofeld with the robotic eye whilst locked up in a maximum security prison was a massive plot hole tbf, you're telling me MI6 with all its incredible tech didn't once think to body scan him before locking him away, also how in the fuck did his eyeball communicate outside his cell, he on WiFi 20

Bond stayed on the island cause he had the nanobots on him with the DNA sequence to kill his missus and I assume his daughter so he couldn't risk them leaving the island and passing on and eventually killing them.

Hardy is older now than when Craig started (Craig was 38 in Casino Royale, Hardy is 44). They probably want to go younger. Craig was blowing out his legs by his second movie.
Do you think they are going to hire Christopher Nolan to start the new continuity? I remember hearing rumors about that. If its Christopher Nolan/Tom Hardy i will be so HYPE

People who start rumors of a Bond “continuity“ don’t know anything about Bond.

Besides Nolan is making his Oppenheimer movie when they’ll be starting the new Bond.

Ah, Mr Bond. I was expecting you – to entertain me

James Bond shouldn’t die. It’s a key attribute of the character that he doesn’t. He’s a man called James Bond who gets into exceptionally dangerous scrapes and doesn’t die. Those are the three main things. Everything else is subject to change: his appearance, accent, the extent and nature of his misogyny, his choice of gun, his favourite car. They’ve had him drinking Heineken for the last couple of films and it just about holds and we all understand it probably buys us a couple of extra car chases. Fine. But if you make him die, you might as well change his name to Eric. I wouldn’t have minded a film about someone called Eric Bond who died. Instead of the dangerous scrapes, it could be a family drama about the scourge of cancer.

As a result, every film, every scene, every hat landed on a hatstand, every grin at Desmond Llewelyn’s sternness, is now brutally recontextualised. When Connery wins at roulette, when Roger Moore attempts re-entry, when Pierce Brosnan merrily drives a tank through St Petersburg, they are all portraying a man destined to lie bleeding, heartbroken and alone, missing the daughter he never really knew, waiting to be blown to bits by his own country’s missiles. It’s quite the buzzkill.

I think they could have rewritten the ending to A) give Bond a more sweet farewell, ESPECIALLY if they are going to make major changes to the series going forward and B) make Lynch a MUCH more important character instead of the glorified chauffeur she was.

So at the end, Lynch and Bond switch roles. Lynch stays, defeats Rami, and gets infected. Rather than go back to society and risk the nanobots spreading and eventually killing an innocent(?) woman and child, she chooses self-sacrifice BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT NOBLE HEROES FUCKING DO!!!

Bond naturally protests this and is promptly bitch slapped by Lynch who says "You have a GODDAMNED FAMILY NOW, take a FUCKING BREAK!". Bond realizes that he can, indeed MUST, prioritize his daughter because right next to him is an EQUALLY COMPETENT agent who can pull up her big girl britches and get to work.

Then all the 00's, M, Q, etc and Bond salute Lynch at her wake, then Bond rides off into the sunset with the girls. M turns to Moneypenny (who has also been reduced to a glorified exposition device by the removal of all the flirty banter with Bond) and says "Get me some files, I need a new 007, code name James Bond" BA DAH DUMM!!

First 10 minutes was dope.

Ana de Armas 13 second fight scene was dope (and I usually hate it when 107lb models take out special forces type dudes with their hands)

The John Wick staircase scene was the opposite of dope.

Anyone else get Metal Gear Solid vibes?

CGI continues its unnecessary creep into Bond films.

I can't remember anything else from the movie because it was all so generic.

Anyone remember Serverine? Got damn she was hot.

All Bonds should end with Bond dying. Movie should have ended there instead of the limp toast tacked on afterwards.

Edit: Just realized I didn't mention the villain...he was in the movie.

The hell is all this supposed to mean? Craig’s Bond was clearly in its own continuity (Blofeld’s story alone confirms this, along with other factors), so why the fuck would him dying affect what happened to the prior films? If you want to claim all the pre-Craig films are in the same continuity, that’s more believable, but claiming the Craig films are in the same continuity is almost as stupid as claiming the Burton/Schumacher Batman films are in the same continuity as the Nolan films.

Also, heartbroken and alone? The man got to know he had a child who would be raised by a woman he loved and they would be safe now. And physically he was alone at that moment but obviously not truly alone, he had a good amount of people who cared for him. Christ, he died saving the world, but this article makes it seem like he died pathetically. For fucks’ sake, M flat out spells out for the audience what Bond’s life meant for them all, but I guess the article writer was too butthurt over a Bond film deviating from the norm he couldn’t pay attention to the answer being flat out spoon fed to them.

And cheap shot bringing the pandemic into all this. Heaven forbid they keep to a schedule and such and can’t always adjust elements in time. And besides, yes it’s not the happiest time in the world, but I’m not able to tell a writer what they should or shouldn’t write when it comes to tone. If you’re not ready for darker stories, then avoid them, and if this article writer couldn’t figure out the Craig films would be darker based on the endings of Casino Royale, and Skyfall as well, well geezus this guy is beyond dense.

Also funny how no one bitched when Logan did THE EXACT SAME THING because thankfully everyone who saw that movie understood how continuities work (hell, based on the timeline of when the movie says mutant powers stopped emerging, it’s strongly implied the film is even a separate timeline from the Days of Future Past ending timeline), and so we didn’t have to endure idiots going, “how could they do this, now he can’t be in the MCU!” Thank you, people who saw Logan, for actually using your brains.

There is an scene of M looking at paintings of other Ms and another 007, right in the movie. Can they not take hints?

Also, Bonds are a sign of the times. Story telling these days means offing people you don't expect. It surprisingly morphed from Jason Borne to stay relevant.

I watched the first two and didn't care for this Bond the least bit, so I don't care about the spoilers.

They'll probably try to spin it off or create a new Bond that they think appeals to Gen Z, who couldn't care less about Bond, it will suck and bomb and James Bond proper will be back.

Movie released in Australia this week so finally saw it last night. Enjoyed it a hell of a lot.

Wife and I watched the first 4 films over the last few nights and we weeped like bitches when Bond died. I know that no other Bond actor has died in their respective films but I really liked the way that they ended his saga. I also liked that they set up him potentially having a family and retiring with them. What ManaByte ManaByte said in this thread or the other thread about Bond leaving and retiring with Vesper is true, he did retire for her. If people didn't have an issue with it 15 years ago, why do they have an issue with it now.
My only complaint about the love angle is that I still feel as though Craig/Seydoux don't have the required chemistry, even after 2 movies. Meanwhile, Craig/Green had 100% chemistry, if only Eva Green was used for the last 2 films.

I had no understanding of what Safin's plan was at the end but you know what, I don't give a shit, it's James Bond and he always has rich villains with massive facilities. I don't need clear villain motivations to enjoy a Bond film, just give me great action. And boy did this film deliver on the action, and the sound, wow.

I wouldn't call myself a Bond fan, about 3 or 4 years ago I watched all 20 Bond films leading up to Pierce Brosnan's exit and I can't for the life of me remember what film is what. I certainly enjoyed many of them, hated the Brosnan films, remember really enjoying the George Lazenby film. I will say that I'm a big Daniel Craig Bond fan though, enjoy them all except for Spectre which is quite boring.

I can't wait to see what Eon do with James Bond next and I really can't wait to see Cary Fukunaga's next movie. Going back to the action, there are so many amazing camera angles used in the set pieces which just kicks up the adrenaline. Loved the single take stairwell shootout too.

Bring on more.

These latest Bond films make far too much money a movie to leave it sitting around gathering dust, there'll be bond movies for years to come. My worries is how they're gonna reboot it for the next generation coming behind me who are doing a damned fined job of pussyfying everything around them i weep for what could happen to our beloved Bond.

With 25 or so entries I could certainly subsist entirely on the existing films for scratching any bond itch. And the craig films are dour, uncharismatic, and "not fun" enough that if they continue in that vein the perpetual rewatchability of new bond films is rapidly fading.

I want more bond but if it's gonna be 5 years between films then I'd rather they take fewer risks and make each one a more "classic" Bond film.

The Craig films are my favorites, but I will admit, they're not as rewatchable as the older ones. I think this movie might be quite rewatchable, although as a whole, it might be the worst of the Craig Bonds. It felt like the story was paint-by-numbers, but the action was ratcheted up a ton. The return of gadgets was nice too. But it's weird that they can't have a good story while still keeping the action.

The guy directed the shit out of the action scenes. He had wide shots and still managed to convey intensity Sam Mandes completely failed to bring in both Skyfall and especially Spectre's hilariously tranquil chase sequence.

I am a sucker for beautiful cinematography, but Skyfall went to far with its long shots. I am glad we have a director who knows action in charge of this franchise. After the awesomely shot Casino Royale, Quantum, Skyfall and Spectre back to back was disheartening.

My issue with Bond dying is that it's too cliche. They were trying to subvert expectations by killing off Bond but ended up falling into the trap of many franchises that have no idea how to end without killing off the lead character. I thought giving Bond a kid and a happy ending wouldve been a less cliche way of ending a franchise that typically has Bond go through women like wildfire.

The way they did it is also lame. So they created this mcguffin virus out of nowhere in the movie, and poison him. Ok. How is that related to the overall character arc or the overarching plot of the franchise? If anything, blowfield shouldve been involved in the finale with his last big fuck you to Bond seeing as how they blamed him for every rotten thing to ever have happened to Bond. Just inventing a new villain and having him be the reason Bond cant see his kid grow up is lame.

I dont know. i thought the first two acts were brilliant. The intro is legendary with a phenomenal introduction of Rami Malek's villain, and an incredible setpiece in Italy. Ana De Armes was incredible in Cuba. The best Bond girl since Eva Green, but I just didnt buy the final island setpiece. It left a bitter taste and movie pretty much ended on a whimper.

Yeah, I can definitely see where you are coming from with the virus coming from out of no where, it doesn't make sense naratively. I'm actually confused, why was M helping develop the virus with Project Heracles? Just a weapon to use if needed?

And yeah, I'd love to see Ana De Armes in an action film.

I didn't mind them killing him, I just wasn't sure I liked how Safin was on his way out of the island and then randomly off screen decides to go back.

I thought it was clever infecting him with the nanobots that would've killed the ones he loved, but the fact that there's no way he would've made it off the island in time anyway, plus he was shot with like 8 bullets took some of the weight of the situation away from that. Even without being infected with the virus he would've died. I think a better ending would've been to have that happen before he was screwed of getting off the island in time, and then have that decision make him decide to stay on the island to sacrifice himself.

I watched it today and was surprised by the end. I was not bothered by the other 007 she wasn’t James Bond.
The bad guy lost the war but defeated Bond in a sense because he stole his future.
I would give this movie 3.5 stars.

Needed to add that the sequence with Anna De Armas was great and her character was brilliant and probably the highlight of the film.

I hope they do a remake of Dr. No/Thunderball next with….idk… Tom Hardy?

Will people stop with this Tom Hardy shit, He's too fucking old to be starting a new era as Bond, even more so when you consider the next film is probably (at least) 2-3yrs out.

MGS inspired, no doubt about it, but damn, the characters are so weak and uninteresting, even the cinematography is surprisingly uninspired and there's absolutely nothing going on under the (shallow as it is) surface.
Maybe the script was much better on paper, but in the actual finished product, everything started to slowly fall appart after the first 30 minutes or so.

Fragile was quite good though. Hope to see her more.
