It's been exactly a year since PS5 released and you still can't walk into a shop and purchase one

I hear a lot of “by this time I rather wait for a PS5 Pro”. Yea, like those will be any easier to get when released…
i'm waiting for a PS5 Pro/Slim. yeah it might be hard to find them too but the difference is i'll maybe make an effort to get one.

right now there is no rush for me to get a PS5. the only PS5 exclusive i want to play is Demons Souls (a 12 year old game). i can play Horizon Forbidden West on my PS4 whenever that comes out. If i were interested in God of War/Gran Turismo then i could play them on my PS4 too. i'm still waiting on a true next gen PS5 exclusive game that convinces me to buy the PS5. i can't see anything from Sony selling the PS5 for me. If there is another From Software exclusive game and/or Persona 6 then that's what will push me to try get a PS5.

Well, I got mine on launch day.
Several of my friends have one now. Me and two others have the Digital Edition, the ones that are apparently non-existent according to some.

My hopes and prayers go out to those who haven’t been able to get one yet.

I can't imagine having to play on PS4 with those frame rates after playing on PS5 this past year. If it doesn't bother you then yeah, definitely don't see much reason to upgrade to current gen at all. Just about everything is still available on last gen.

I guess Sony’s site had 4 or 5 for sale today. Got an invite yesterday. Clicked the link a bit earlier at the stated time, got into a Que for like 11 minutes, then got redirected to the site to actually purchase and…….. “Out of stock”. Fuck you Sony. Well, actually saved me over $500.
Yeah I got the PS5 purchase “apply for invite” message and have decided that if I don’t get an invite I’ll just skip the PS5 this generation. So much stuff is multi platform and I fortunately have a Series X (from a MS purchasing beta program). I’d like to play Miles and Ratchet but could skip them if necessary. The new Horizon Zero Dawn would be cool too, but I’m not going to stress for two or three years over it. I suppose I could just play it on PS4 though

I was fortunate to get one at launch at msrp.

after months of looking for a ps5 for my best friend. I caved and bought one off of eBay for him.

It’s the same cost as Xbox all access except for PlayStation. $30 something a month for 24 months. 2% interest.

The only thing that hits shelves is the Xbox Series S that most people want to skip on. You can’t even buy a last gen Xbox or ps4 new anywhere.

I finally got a ps5 from Sony Direct but still want a Series X for Forza.

Gotta say, I’m pretty happy I went with a Series X and decided to wait out PS5. It’s been a cross-gen fest this year and Xbox is great for that.

I’m looking forward to the day I can buy a PS5,download like 5-10 killer apps all at once, and just splurge all month on them. It’s going to be ectoplasmic.

Do you at least get PS Now or something for the extra $200+ you're spending in that scenario? You're awfully nice if you're spending that extra money on a PS5 for your friend. I'd tell my friends to buy their own stuff.

Why does everyone act like only sony is having trouble meeting demand? People are about to start scalping OLED switches soon
Lol people are scalping anything. My wife eats Belvita brand snacks for breakfast and everytime a new seasonal flavor comes out it ends up on Amazon for 5 to 10x the retail price. Just looked for gingerbread flavor and yep they're being scalped.

Plus in all likelihood we'll be able to play their ported, slightly improved ps6 versions for cheaper.

How many times are you going to repeat the same damn reply on every thread you can find? Everytime I see your username you're saying the same thing?

The longer I wait the longer I realize I can continue to wait. Outside of Spider-Man and Ghost of Tsushima there’s nothing else I’d really want to play. Beat the original demon souls on ps3 and refuse to torture myself again at this old age. Maybe in 2023 when a slim is released along with TLOU 2 remastered

I wonder what the problem actually is. Aren’t enough chips being produced because factories are closed due to covid? Or is it the shipping/delivering that’s the issue (which seems to be a general issue right now, especially in the US)? Or are factories still working off the backlogs they accumulated during the height of the covid crisis?

Since these supply issues are expected to continue for a few more years, I find it hard to believe that it’s directly related to covid anymore at this point.
also with people having to work from home, and some still do, everyone had to get computers and electronics which created an even bigger backlog at the fabs.

I 100% probably would have impulse bought a PS5 if they were available.

At this point I think I went long enough that I dont think I need one anymore (Im primarily a PC gamer).

Of course they dont have enough supply but I wonder if long term the sales of the console will suffer due to people like me.

To be fair, I can walk into my local CEX store and buy a PS5 or XSX if I want. I'd have to remortgage my house in order to afford it, though ...

got 3 since xD
Yeah same, got 3 at MSRP, 1 for me and 2 for other people... It's not that hard when you know how to watch websites and order fast. I can't believe when I see people "oh no it was available but the time I get up, go pick up my credit card, came back to the computer, it was gone"... sure if you act like that you can wait long...

Every time I needed a PS5 I got one within 3 days at MSRP. I live in France and it's a Sony country (nobody gives a fuck about MS) but still if you're careful it's fairly easy to get one.

Still will be great to see PS5 on shelves in every shops.

What's interesting is the amount of people getting a digital version because they can't find a disk version, thinking "ha, whatever, it's better than nothing I'll just go digital on PS5 then", I wonder how much it can change the market. If the situation wasn't what it is, I'm quite sure 90%+ of the PS5 sold would be disk versions but the digital version is quite popular due to the high demand. Will it change the way how those gamers buy games in the future or will they go back to a disk version asap ?

And all i had to do was set my alarm clock 10 minutes before midnight of launch day, spam F5 on 3 online stores and order 1 from one of the stores. One of the stores ended up crashing and went offline, and 10 minutes after midnight was already sold out everywhere.

I did not preordered cuz i actually tought they would be easy available after lauch, 500€ is not cheap for my country, but these things disappear the same day they get restocked. Crazy that 1 year after release things are still the same.

My cousin that lives in germany ended up paying 700€ from a scalper to get one.

Yeap. It’s the only console I see by the dozens on supermarkets here in the Netherlands. That and Switch Lites.

What are the most popular games right now?

Fortnite
COD Warzone
FIFA
Apex

None of these games require beefy hardware and for most people (kids, parents, family and friends) the cheapest most available point of entry is the go to.

So I can see why PS5/XSX for the latest and best at relative performance and price. The rest just get the cheapest box that runs it - wouldn’t be surprised if PS4 sales are very high.

I can’t see a PS5 pro coming any time soon, I can see an influx of streaming services and platforms that eliminate the expensive barrier of a dedicated hardware box and will get people easily signed up to ropey but getting better services.

Give it 3-5 years and I think dedicated hardware will be reserved for the enthusiast who wants native res and minimal input lag (which is pretty decent on services already btw)

This isn't a good thing as PS5 is currently tracking behind the PS4. Sony is missing out on valuable covid momentum with the chip shortages.

It’s definitely dragged on longer than I thought but fuck these scalpers. Still can’t find RRP a RTX 3070 / PS5 / XSX absolute joke.

I think this generation is going to be a mess and won’t reach its full potential until a long time. At this rate, I don’t think there is no way the PS5 will come nowhere close to the sales of the PS4. Also, why release a PS5 Pro when you can’t even hardly get your PS5 onto store shelves for sale?

I truly don’t think this shortage will truly end until Late 2023 and that’s being very generous. Maybe this is a part of the reason for their PC first party ports and of course the cross generation games.

Here is what I got:
1. PS5 - at midnight on release, I was able to place my order through Sony Direct. Didn't expect to get one, but it happened. Ordered it that thursday, it arrived that Saturday.
2. Xbox Series X. Same thing - I ordered mine from MS, the night of release. I actually ordered it BEFORE the PS5, but it didn't get delivered until Dec. 20th.
3. Geforce 3080 - joined the EVGA queue and waited about 6 months. Didn't expect to get one, but I received the email and I placed the order. Was able to sell my 2080 Ti for what I paid. This is really the perfect system and one MS and Sony should adopt.

For the record, I feel that both MS and Sony really screwed the pooch with their launches. Sony and MS should have sent out a sign up sheet with a deposit, then sent out orders in the order in which they were placed in the queue. One per address/person. Members who had been long members of Gold/PS+ should have been given priority.

Got mine at launch as always did it with PlayStations (I kind suck at that :messenger_beaming:), with a pre-order, but it was a little easy to get one, at first, in Brazil.
Made an Amazon pre-order on the first day, but cancelled it 2 weeks later to made another pre-order with another retailer because of CC bonus and still got it at launch day.
Wasn't imagine that it would be too hard to get one after the launch month, or at all, because it's kinda expensive here, but here we are, getting a few units every 2 or 3 months that vanish in minutes.
You can walk in some shops and get one, but with 20, 30% over msrp.
And It was worth for Demon's Souls alone, but Returnal, Miles Morales and better versions of Avengers, Sekiro at 60 fps and so on are the ice on the cake.
