A Halogaf Community Thread: The Old Becomes New

I honestly wouldn’t mind the customization if we had the same basic level of customization that we had in Halo 1 (though preferably Reach). have the cooler/insane new sets be paid for and in the battle pass. But its clear the devs just want to get as much money for as little effort as possible.

Thankfully there will be some armor sets in the main campaign, but how much and what “type” remains to be seen. Hoping we can get some good/rare looking armor for doing uqniue things like 100% completing the game on Legendary.
Im sure if they haven't created them yet they certainly will in the future. Would be nice to have a mix of items that you can earn for free offset by some nicer sets that you can buy if you're willing. Plus I like the idea of being rewarded for doing certain achievements like you mention. More and more I think it's apparent that 343 were really just say behind on development this whole time. It's not that they didn't want to have more offerings, they just haven't had a chance to do it yet. At least that's my hope, that they will eventually.

You guys saw a Wasp and Banshee? it's like a myth in my games.

Thank god the Tenrai event is coming up so I can get out of the basic armor, lol. And yeah, I hope there's some cool unlocks from doing the campaign.

That is my guess, but we still shouldn't just sit back and accept the situation as it is. Halo 5 was... bad to say the least and it still had more content, variety, and customiation options than this. We should expect more.

If 343i really cares they would refund everyone who bought anything during this beta in forms of in-game credits.

Yeah I've wondered how 343 could change the system or at least reduce the pricing on certain items if other players have already made purchases. If 343 toned down the cost they'd have to do refunds. Seems really unlikely they'd go that route, but perhaps they can introduce new armors that aren't required by battle pass to give players more options. I shared that tweet thread above and it is strange that when you have such a good system going in the master chief collection that you'd toss it aside and come up with something so much more exorbitant. Like i've said before, I'm even willing to spend a little but there just anything worthwhile to purchase. Most if not all of the good armor is post level 50. So even purchasing the battle pass doesn't really accomplish a whole lot. 343 displays the HCS skins using the Mark VII helmet, but that isn't available until level 96. lol I haven't even hit level 6 yet.

I have 15 hours or so? And I am only level 7. Its really bad progression.

You should be able to complete a battle pass in 50 hours. That, I feel, is a sweet spot. Gives enough time for those with family/lives/other games a chance to play and not feel like they are barely progressing. Yes there are "6" months of this, but the vast majority of people aren't going to be playing every waking moment of those 6 months. The current rate of progression means you wouldn't complete it until a month before hand and that is playing 4-5 hours *a day*, assuming you have semi-decent challenges.

But as you stated earlier, it really does feel ike this was rushed out and blatantly unfinished. Supposedly we are going to get "timed events" that shoul dhelp speed up things? But they only last a week and then are gone unti lthey decide to bring it back again.

What's in them.

It's not actual armor... it's just coatings, emblems, poses etc.

There is going to be huge backlash when word of this starts spreading because it's the one thing people were hanging onto during this battle pass/armor unlock controversy.

Yea that's a huge let down. Don't call them armor lockers if there is no armor in them.

Okay I'm not up to speed. Why are people going to be upset? Are these lockers just strewn about the Halo?

There's "armor lockers" in the campaign, they're collectibles you find that unlock things for multiplayer. People were expecting them to have armor to make up for how the unlock system is in multiplayer, and it'd also be similar to Halo 3's system. Turns out they don't have any armor at all (from what we can tell right now).

Okay yeah that is weird. Armor lockers without armor. Welp guess we get to see what 343 does with all the backlash lol.

I gotta say it feels pretty lame when you rank up a level and see the rewards that aren't useable without the battle pass. Like congratulations here is the item that you didn't truly unlock. That is something 343 probably should have considered and taken out.

Reddit already flipping out on it

The more I think about it, the more down on this whole system I become. I hate to say it but I think I may have even preferred REQs to this, because at least with that you could truly unlock (nearly?) everything by just playing.

Rofl I just played a game with someone who already has the Mark VII helmet. I messaged to ask how he has it already and he sent the money emoji and an emoji of someone flashing a peace sign. I just laughed. But it's proof people are spending a lot of money on the game already.

343's decision to go F2P for Infinite is really best case scenario at this point, Halo is truly back in the limelight almost overnight. More people playing Halo in a long long time - and many being introduced to its great gameplay for the first time. Word of mouth is helping - but most importantly once people try it, the game stands on its own and is fun as hell.

As for the paid cosmetics, if people are willing to spend the money - more power to them. I guess it shows its smart business to go the F2P route over hoping people buy the $60 game. Potential to milk people for years on cosmetics alone - and make more money than just a single sale of the game - the Halo franchise even stopped charging for additional maps years ago.
Im good paying $10 for the pass, I got to level 14 less than a week in, with 6 months left to reach 100.

I hope this success causes a studio shift to boost content (maps and modes) quickly and consistently - theres something that tells me not even 343 thought it would be this big, this fast.

The entire industry needs to come together against this shit. So sick of console hardware and PC scripts/installs in online games.

Ugh that's just wrong. What is sad is people actually feel accomplished and good about themselves when they do this. It's just pathetic. I wonder what options 343 has against it.

I don't think it's that really. They're people who get joy from just pissing people off and how easier than using cheap shit like that to get the most people pissed off the fastest. They know it's gonna piss people off in mass and enjoy that. Reminds me of that South Park Episode on trolls.

Everyone better scream out loud for Xbox only servers, and not just ranked matches either. From the get go, players should be able to opt into either open servers or Xbox only servers. This shit ruined Sea of Thieves for a little while, until they got Xbox only servers. I rarely go into open servers anymore on that game.

This... is absolutely insane. What the hell are they doing? Are they TRYING to make people hate them?

Ah, the game is free to play. This is what you get with FTP. Not a fan of FTP myself, but it is what it is. Although I do think armor sets should only be like $10 and all the colors and accessories be like $5. I think they would sell more. Unless there is some color and armor set combo that is really cool to me from Halo lore, I doubt I'll ever buy an armor set at $20. After a while, people will begin to ignore it, as having tons of armor, colors and cosmetics begins to loose its luster.

One thing I do hate is a color scheme is only good for a specific type of armor, which sucks when you pay for a color scheme you really like. I love the Razer armor color, but it is only good for the base set. 😏

Being "F2P" doesn't excuse the fact that there is so very little content, the progression and systems related to it are broken and reward assholes and ranked is broken.

Slipgate is Free to Play and it has more content, more variety, better payment and progression, better design on said progression, and its ranked actually rewards players playing the objective. And it was made by 12 people.

I'll be honest. I would rather this game have been $60 or even $70 if it would've meant sidestepping all this extreme monetization. But that's just my personal opinion.

I do think it'll be changed because reddit and other places are currently going defcon 1 over it. But what gets me is that MS literally just went through this exact same thing with Gears 5. And Coalition even worked on this game too. So why they're choosing to repeat it now, except arguably even worse... mystifies me.

I have to agree. I would prefer paying $60 for the multiplayer and avoid the monetization part. In Halo 5 it took a while but by playing you could eventually unlock almost everything for free. The hardest part for Halo fans in my opinion is that we have been trained to expect customization to be built into the game and not cost anything. It's easy to point out that jt is f2p now but that doesn't really excuse the extreme departure from what we are used to in Halo games. For people that aren't willing or possibly unable to spend money on the game they are essentially locked out of almost everything. The better path would have been to have more free options with extra unique/cool items and sets available to purchase on the side. I have no idea what 343 was thinking. It's like going from one end of the spectrum (halo 5) to the worst offender. The only positive in all of it is that it's still not a pay to win game at least. I seriously keep thinking about purchasing the battle pass but that doesn't really do much unless I'm willing to also spend more on other things. Which might be okay if the pricing wasnt so exorbitant. $20 dollar armor set? Lol no thank you.

This is pretty awesome

That does look sweet. If a person really gets into Infinite, that would be a cool print to have.

So I've only played the first day of release of Infinite and then went on vacation. Just got back today and getting back to the beta now, to see how the grind is. Didn't know you could grind achievements and challenges in bot matches. Makes some of the challenges pretty damn easy. 🤣

Not a fan of BTB so far, but I love the flow on these arena maps and the close quarter combat and all the craziness.

I'm loving the game so much but crashes are really spoiling the game sometimes.

I crashed 3 games in a row last night and ended up copping a 1hr ban from ranked because of it. It's also killing my progression. I should be diamond but I'm stuck in platinum due to the amount of losses I'm racking up from crashes.

Praying for a patch/reconnect option ASAP.

Yeah I had similar last night, one crash when I was trying to join a party of 6 mates in chat and fireteam. Then reboot xbox and game resume quit just to have the in game "join" take several attempts to get in.

The other part that is a very poor experience is the resume feature, wonderful for offline/solo games but horrible for online multiplayer games like Infinite or Apex. The resume state saved on your console is never available or elegant when going back into Infinite, it just craps out various things or doesn't work, the UI falls apart etc. You have to quit and restart. Devs really need to handle the server side no longer available and elegantly take you back in the UI/matchmaking process while refreshing your session and no issues going into your next game or fireteam.

It would be nice if the updates for the Xbox Resume feature also had an "exclude" option so games like Infinite just didn't do resume at all. It would be faster and cleaner all round, considering the load times of a Series X game anyway.

Also I checked out the stream you hosted the other day, nice job there mate!

Oh thanks mate! Few cobwebs that still need dusting off but we get to go again this Sunday which is good.

I'm playing primarily on PC which are where all my crashes are. There's a known issue with respawning, particularly on Streets, which causes the game to lock up. Uninstalling the HD texture pack and minimising a bunch of sensory features in the Accessibility menu can help somewhat, but the game is so CPU intensive that it can only do so much unfortunately.

Oh I wish I had known this sooner lol. I was running around trying to get kills with the pulse carbine and took 3 games to get 3 kills 🤣

I just looked and apparently me completing all the weekly challenges last week didn't unlock the visor. What a rip... Trying to get stupid weapon kills in the game and then it was all for nothing...

Edit: I guess the weekly challenges can't be completed without the battle pass. What a clown show.

I wish they would add different difficulty playlists for the bots, like Gears does. As it is right now the entire playlist is pretty much braindead easy and borderline impossible to lose at.

Reminds me of the ol' Warthog surfing to steal the flag and slide jump out the window on 1-flag Burial Mounds.
omg i completely mixed that video up with something else lol. My bad. Still fantastic to see people messing around in Halo infinite and having a blast while doing it. I saw your post and first thought it was the tweet of a person in the campaign trying to climb out of a map using the grappling hook. Now I need to go back and see if I can find the original video of the 1-flag burial mounds game.

Hoping they introduce more BTB maps at least by Dec 8 or January. Arena is not too bad, but rotation for BTB can have you playing the same map for 3-4 games in a row.

I just hope all of these micro transactions leads to more maps, modes and weapons.

I know more maps will come. Hopefully sooner than later but Dec 8th might be too optimistic. Though I am with you on wanting more maps.

Will watch after I get off work later.
Was playing a few btb games last night and I had 3 in a row where all but myself and maybe one other person had positive KD's. So on the fourth game I got angry. Still lost (4 in a row lol) but I was able to take out my frustrations.

People pay $20 in Fortnite for full skins and don't complain.. people just looking for something to bitch about here. Nothing new.

I think we should keep some perspective though. The biggest thing being that Fortnite isn't Halo. Customizations have a been a huge part of Halo for a long time. Yes it's expected that a lot of stuff will cost money now, but it wasn't expected that almost the entirety of customization would be behind a paywall. There is still a campaign that people will be paying for and once upon a time that price included everything. Does Fortnite have a campaign that costs money?

Please don't fault Halo fans for expecting some consistency from the previous Halo. Halo 5 had reqs that could be purchased but there were more than enough options for the people who didnt feel comfortable spending money and most of the items could eventually be unlocked for free with patience. 343 could charge a lot less for cosmetics in Infinite and still make plenty of profits. As is the progression system and pricing is straight garbage and I don't think there is anything wrong with letting 343 know as much.

A completely unrelated game doing something awful does not then make it acceptable to do the same awful thing here. I have not played a second of Fortnite and have no plans of doing so in the future.

Ever since Halo 3, armor customization has always been a big part of Halo and for it to now be shamelessly monetized like this is of course going to cause people to (rightfully) complain.
