Multiplayer First Person Shooters are in a horrible state right now.

Halo Infinite has it.

It's quite fun. Fighting alone against 8 bots at high difficulty is basically a hidden survivor mode.
1v8 (bots) - bazaar - snipers - add slow movement, infinite ammo and no pick ups

super fun sneaky sniper mode ive been having fun with. theres sooooo much you could do with bots in this game, im stupid excited to mess around with that more. you could do super speed and sword, or rocket starts, or double health, or other craziness. and thast all before forge is even released.

this game is going to be epic af

Halo and Apex pretty much have me covered and I think are genuinely top tier FPS experiences.

I am an oldschool Battlefield fan so it hurts to see the state of BF 2042 and I apologize to anyone that I may have been dissing about being overly negative on the Beta as I genuinely thought they may have sorted most of the shit for launch.

EA and Dice have let us all down.

Apex is pretty great. Halo is amazing. But besides that I kinda agree. Nothing else grabs me. I loved BF before but I feel like I’m just a pawn in a massive simulation playing them. Even more now with the higher player count.

Vanguard is solid.

Warzone is about to get a new map, anti cheat, and I think it gets the updated engine from Vanguard, which is very, very good.

Regardless of the style of shooter you play it is my opinion that Multiplayer FPS games are in the gutter. Whether it is rampant cheating, lack of innovation, souless execution, or bug ridden launches, every single game in the genre is plagued with something. Probably the best launch this year, Halo Infinite, is still just a well made upgrade on the formula Halo 2 popularized, which is great for the people who want to play the same game they have been playing for years, but not ideal for those of us looking for something new. The most interesting and innovative FPS out there, Escape from Tarkov, is A) Only on PC, B) being destroyed by cheaters, and C) has a dev team that actually hates its customers. The most popular FPS, Warzone, is A) being destroyed by cheaters, and B) is developed by an actual evil corporation that wants to suck your soul from your body and then sell it back to you as microtransations to pay for their sexual harassment lawsuits. 2042 crash landed worse than the Hindenburg, and Vanguard...LOL who gives a shit about Vanguard?

Why is there so little innovation in this genre? I am flabbergasted that a AAA dev hasn't taken on the Tarkov Formula and put it in a package that doesn't want to repeatedly stab you in the back. Honestly The Cycle Frontier beta was the most fun I have had with an FPS for a while. Who knew Yager could take their failed BR, rip off Tarkov, and make such an enjoyable game. Too bad it doesn't actually launch until next year...

Why does DICE fuck it up every single time? Does nobody QA their games? Why don't they have professional FPS players, streamers, and regular fucking gamers testing their shit and telling them...Hey morons some of this stuff doesn't work?!!?!

Why is Halo infinitely stuck as basically the same game. Where are innovative modes? What about a Halo Extraction Royal (Think Hunt the showdown, Hazard Zone, Tarkov light) mode or maybe even a BR?

Why are AA (B) devs allergic to tactical shooters right now, and why does every game need "Specialists, Operators, or the like"?

Is this genre doomed to be a derivative, cheater infested, well of disappointment for the foreseeable future?
It only appears this way because of iterative releases. Why? Because it was the dog that didn't bark: You made no mention of CS:GO.

We need a new, full on Unreal Tournament to save us from the BF , CoD garbage.
I want it so bad, but unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever see it.

What Epic was putting together was looking and sounding better and better. But then Fortnite started making money, and suddenly they didn't care about UT anymore. So they swept it under the rug.

Honestly, I don't think I'll ever change my mind about Epic because of that, lol.

BR is innovative? BR WAS innovative, until it became oversaturated.

If we're going for innovation we need something completely different than what currently exists, and I'm all for it. The problem is a lot of developers, especially AAA, don't want to take any risky steps. So, they just keep going with what they know "works" or is "popular."
BR would be innovative for HALO. Maybe not for the genre, but Halo needs something more than the same modes we have played since the OG Xbox.

BF for example started with conquest, went to rush, back to conquest, added in an excellent breakthrough mode and has tried tons of other modes throughout the years. This is what I am talking about when it comes to innovation with halo.

Imagine Halo "escape from tarkov" mode. Drop into a map and fight AI and other players for loot and get out. That would be cool. But man if you like arena slayer then I am happy for you.

Do you actually play FPSs? Or have you every played them?
Halo is peak multiplayer shooter right now. Don’t associate it with COD or BF, those are crap and very redundant.
Yes I have played a ton of them. The best idea to come out since the BR is "Extraction Royal" (Tarkov, Hunt, etc). More games should create cool new modes like Extraction Royal is now and Battle Royal was previously. I salute DICE for hazard zone, just wish they hadn't been so half assed about it. They missed what the soul of extraction royal is (multiplayer roguelite).

It's been that way for years, and is probably the biggest reason I've drifted away from MP (which I still enjoy btw). The last two mp games I played non-stop were BF4/3 and Tribes Ascend.

There are some games I've yet to try, though, such as Hell Let Loose, Squad, Tarkov (only played a little). But my bread and butter is games like UT, Quake, original Halo (trilogy) that have small but focused arena gameplay. I loved Lawbreakers so that situation was sad. Every arena game today is some dumb hero shooter and I just don't vibe with them. Maybe one day we'll get a fun true arena game again.

Well, to be fair, we COULD still be seeing BR in Infinite. Wasn't it hardcore rumored for a great while? I mean, as much as I don't care for them, it'd be a smart move on their part considering it's still popular.

Honestly with Infinite, at least so far, the mode Stockpile felt refreshing enough, haha. Especially when you get two really good teams duking it out.

It really is sad that it feels like we aren't seeing a lot of variation and innovation when it comes to modes these days. I mean, in the 90's and early 00's it felt plentiful AF. Whether they were official modes, or mods, there were tons that worked really well, and were a ton of fun.

I've actually be really surprised that after all this time Jailbreak or something similar didn't make a come back of any form.

Id like to point out that I did not knock halo for being a bad game or anything. I'd just like to see devs try new things with "game modes" (Innovation). I am completely okay with the "gameplay" returning to something closer to the good ol' days, but would love new ways to experience it.

Does that make sense?

I am also not an arena guy. Big BF player.

Edit: After rereading my op I am not sure why some Halo peeps are so butthurt. I praised the game but said it needed more innovation in game modes? How is that off base? I can only assume some people are a just reading the title and not the op.

Oh yeah, I know, my bad if I sounded like it was taking it as such. Wasn't intentional if so. Oh yeah, I would too! Definitely!

Haha, I'm a BIG arena shooter fan, but big BF fan too.

I just miss the days when every "big" FPS had its distinctive differences, and all were quality through & through.

I do as well. Unfortunately the homogenization of ideas has caused them all to be similar, and a lack of quality control (or giving a shit) has caused launches and titles to be rather underwhelming at launch. Halo Infinite is refreshing because it is actually well made and faithful. It isn't anything new, or really expanded though. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing if that is what you want.

I am a fan of BR, and, as an extension, Extraction Royal games. Personally a Halo BR would really get me into the game again as I am not an arena guy. Gonna buy and play the campaign though.

I’ve been playing BF 2042 and having a great time. I’ve seen a few graphical glitches but I’ve not encountered the issues that have been making the rounds on YouTube, yet. I know this runs counter to the folks making the hard push to paint the game as a sham, or the devs as a joke of a company, but that hasn’t been my experience. It has worked each game, and has been exact what I wanted from it - mass combat with vehicles on large maps. Anything that comes after this patch-wise is a gravy.

Siege is fantastic.
Apex is great.
Hunt is brilliant.
Insurgency is awesome.
Intruder is unique.
Onward is breathtaking.
Diabotical is slick.
Titanfall 2 is still a blast.
Valorant is actually rewarding to get into.
Warzone is good dumb fun, and more exciting than everything CoD franchise has done in the last decade.
Squad for realism.
Planetside 2 for huge-ass battles.

What the fuck are you on about?
Seriously, Tarkov? The half basic-bitch session-based shooter, half inventory tetris? That's the interesting shit to you?

I think the problem is GAAS in general, not just FPS’s. “Oh, we don’t need to add content now, we will just add it later for free and they will forget all about it”. This is the mentality or large gaming companies right now, and in mind is going to be the downfall of the AAA video game business in the future.

So Halo has to have a BR mode to be innovative? Copying another play mode from other games is innovative?

Battle Royale is the biggest innovation the industry has seen in the last 20 years. It has spawned a title wave of big budget, open world multiplayer games expected to hit in the next couple of years. The genre literally changed the entire trajectory of the industry.

But in this thread, BR bad and a game shackled to 20 year old game design is a breath of fresh air according to a handful of honeymooners.

We are in bizarro land people!

This is why first parties are needed because third party devs are held back by their publishers who want consistent revenue.

This means shorter dev cycles. It means less riskier games. That means less innovation. And that leads to everything feeling samey, buggy and mediocre.

I remember when Sony was investing in first party shooters, I never felt the need to play cod or battlefield or whatever third party trash was coming out that gen. I had Killzone 2 with its unique Warzone mode that cycled through different modes. Incredible visuals and atmosphere. really gritty and heavy shooting mechanics. And it was also one of the few AAA class based shooter. Nowadays everyone is copying that while Overwatch gets all the credit. Back then it was team fortress which wasnt big on consoles and killzone 2 was the only gritty shooter doing classes with their own different abilties.

MAG was doing 256 player battles and now everyone is copying that. Resistance 2 added an 8 player coop horde mode that would eventually become the GaaS PvE genre. Even ND with uncharted and tlou offered unique experiences from amazing traversal mechanics to stealth and melee based shooter mechanics.

It's no surprise that when sony shifted focus from MP, the genre stagnated. 343i cant do shit because their toxic fanbase riots when they add something as small as sprint or ADS. Their hands are tied. So we have been left at the mercy of these third party publishers who just want to make more money. thank god for PubG or we wouldnt even have gotten Warzone.

Yuuuuuup. I wholeheartedly agree, it's just something we haven't seen in a bit. I think it's just another harsh realization of just how bad it's been lately.

I love the concept of BR, but the way it's been done unfortunately hasn't enticed me too much. I think the ones I've played the most have been Spellbreak and Blood Hunt, because both felt different enough for obvious reasons. If Infinite DOES in fact get a BR, which I'm sure it will, I'll certainly give it a whirl. Because a BR within that universe offers weapons and gear we haven't seen in a BR yet, so it too will at least feel a little bit different.

Halo Infinite is awesome

Rainbow 6 isn't nearly as good as ppl hype it up as
Cod sucks now (again). BF still sucks. Enlisted controls are so bad
Destiny PVP feels like it hasn't improved in 4 years. TitanFall 2 is destroyed by hackers

Apex LEgends is better than pretty much anything.

and yes Halo Battle Royal could be awesome. Because anybody that whines about "another battle royal sheesh" is an idiot. And its not like theres 4 million battle royal games. Theres like 3 that ppl actually play. Im sure ppl said COD didn't need a battle royal. Im sure ppl thought Fortnite with the tower defense zombie gameplay.....didn't need a battle royal. Im sure ppl were mad when TitanFall had a spinoff that did a battle royal.

Its not Battle Royals that are bad. Its the bad games that are bad. Hyperscape was bad. Firestorm was bad. Its execution. a Halo Battle Royal done right would be great. Done wrong, it would suck and die. And all the naysayers would point and say i told u so. But if its done right they just move on to hate the next one.

There is still room for innovation in the battle royal sub genre. Extraction Royals are an example of this innovation. There is nothing wrong with BR games, the problem is when new BR games are just like the ones we have. For example another "Tactical" BR in the vein of OG PUBG would be welcome as it is completely different from COD, Apex, and the like.

The compelling thing about Halo BR are its vehicles and well balanced weapons/shield/damage system. Honestly, Halo sets itself up well for a BR just in how the game is designed around weapon pickups to begin with.

Halo BR would be better than Apex IMO. I have never gelled with Apex's shooting mechanics.

How is adding a BR an innovative mode to add to Halo? That would be the least innovative thing to do.

I don't know. Maybe not the 100 players last person standing, but a team battle royal of 50 V 50 (unsc vs covenant) would be pretty sweet. Maybe have one team defending an outpost and the other team needs to destroy it, or kill all defending players.

That would be pretty sweet, right?

You will see frustration with mp fps, what do you consider a good mp fps? The multiplayer is another necessary component to Call of Duty. Treyarch is a master of map design and black ops 2020 is a must play. You're gunning for objectives in places like Miami (Everyone kills this map for it's visibility but night maps matter, locking up flanks and hotel rooms matters) , Moscow (The Moscow map is reminiscent of the three-lane competitive maps of Call of Duty. The central lane leads into the Moscow Metro and the other 2 lanes, the alleys and the main street, can be used to flank), and Uzbekistan. You still have scorestreaks, trashtalk and fighting inside buildings all must have features for modern day multiplayer shooters and you’re raining down on them.

BF4 (after they fixed it) was a great multiplayer FPS. PUBG has my favorite shooting mechanics in a game and in the beginning was a great experience. BC2 is an all time fav. I am a big fan of BF2142 (The old one) and titan mode.

I really dislike cod multiplayer, mainly because of killstreaks. I liked Modern Warfare's take on BF even if it felt a little disjointed. I actually like 2042's gameplay but hate all the issues the game has.

Escape From Tarkov is my favorite idea in the last decade for a multiplayer shooter. Its such a heart-poundingly compelling experience, unfortunately Battle State Games is an indie studio with better ideas than talent. The execution leaves a lot to be desired. An AAA Escape From Tarkov is basically what I want. I'd take a modern setting Hunt the Showdown...too bad EA and DICE were too scared to do it with hazard zone.

Halo infinite = unreal tournament

Insurgency Sandstorm = Call of Duty

Hell let loose = Battlefield

I'm perfectly happy cycling through the above dependant on what I'm in the mood to play. Don't need to waste my time with the abominations that COD and Battlefield have become in modern times.

Did you read what I said about halo? Its a good game but there is no innovation on game modes. That is my critique...

I think most MP FPS games should be treated like sports games, you need to skip 2 or 3 before returning to it. I've been playing battlefield 2042 on PS5 with cross play off and i haven't had many issues. Yea the UI sucks, hovercrafts can go up buildings and fly, and the number of unlockables is questionable, but it's been smooth for me other than that. I haven't played any BF seriously since BF4 so that helps.

Aim assist, bullet magnetism and other assists are the main reasons why the competitive FPS genre is quickly going to shit for me. We're pretty much playing console games that cater to controller players. What's worse is Vanguard and Battlefield decided to add bullet deviation (bloom) to their games, so good accuracy on mouse is rewarded even less thanks to RNG.

It seems like devs are doing pretty much everything they can to squash skill gaps so that anybody can feel like a winner. Take Warzone for example, there's so much bullshit in that game that I bet you could train a monkey to win a match. I say that as somebody who has played it for over 1,000 hours. That's not the case with older games.

I'm finding myself going back to games where I can actually give props to people for hitting a nice shot instead of losing to all sorts of bullshit.
