So far, Series X and PS5 are pretty disappointing upgrades over One X and PS4Pro

For the money you are getting a lot. Graphic Enthusiast dont play on consoles. I think 1440p60 is great for consoles.

The only things I miss is VRR on PS5 which it needs like hell and anisotropic filtering. Also PS5 not supporting 1440p output in a bummer.

The most disappointing part of consoles is plugging them to 4K TV display. The overall image is smeary compared to PC.

Ratchet was incremental compared to 2016 game. Demons Soul's has geometry and Lighting but flat meshes and textures albeit high resolution and zero scene complexity. Returnal plays great and looks even better in motion but 1080p is just too low. The PS5 games have been good but not impressive.

Then we come to Forza which plays awesome but suffers from memory leak heavily on PC. I do have gamepass ultimate but have it only installed on PC. It will get better with fixes for sure. Being Arcade though Forza has limited LOD anytime so its not impressive either.

Conclusion: Until Black Myth comes out you aren't getting anything for which you must have a next gen console. But SSD is just too essential now in my opinion so get one and plug it to your PS4pro or OneX.

SSDs and they don't sound like a hair dryer

You couldn't pay to me to play on the old slow ass HDD consoles. The leap is real.
I still play on Switch daily. It's nice to have an SSD, but its not like I couldn't go back easily.

I like the new systems, but 99% of what I play is just cross-gen stuff and BC stuff. Only a handful of next-gen games even out. Just feels like the real pro versions really. Lots of games at 60 fps, so I'm enjoying it.

The load times are the biggest game changer. I don't think this gen is going to be like, PS3 vs Killzone Shadow Fall or something. Or BF4 PS3 vs BF4 64 players on next-gen. But to be fair we've seen a mid gen upgrade not that long ago.

In graphics probably.

In user experience, heavens no. Fast load times and consistent 60FPS for the vast majority of games while last gen you wait 2 minutes for inconsistent 30.

Much much better this time, it pain to even boot up my old PS4 or One S.

I agree, XSX and PS5 are so far very modest upgrades if we compare the jumps previous generations had over their predecessors. PS4 had incredible looking games from the get go, while this gen is some extra trees and more resolution.

Of course there are diminishing returns and fab nodes just aren't that easy or cheap anymore, but still, it's the most underwhelming new generation of the modern age.
You are only playing cross gen games, in reality there are very few games that take advantage of this gen consoles (and one of them is a remake of a PS3 game with identical gameplay) because they need a big userbase first and the cost is so high even Sony is doing cross gen, but the games will come

That's the thing ; we should be comparing the original model ps4/xb1 with current gen. Ps4 pro has muddied the waters a bit.

Og xbox one vs series X is a much bigger jump than 360 to xbox one.

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Yabuki turned off voice chat in Mario Kart races. True artists of their time.
My last gen go-to console was primarily the Xbox One X, with some occasional gaming on PS4 Pro on the side.
I got myself a PS5 and a Series X a couple of months ago. I have to say, if you don't have a 120Hz monitor, my experience so far on these consoles has been pretty... meh. They feel more like One X2 and PS4 ProPro. Especially One X has spoiled with with great IQ for cross gen games.
I hope these consoles start to put out games that showcase why you need a Series X or a PS5.
What can I play on these things that will wow me? I have Forza Horizon 5 in my living room on my Series X and in my bedroom on my One X. Sure I see some difference but it's not a generational leap.
That's why they still sell Series X games as Xbox One games. Not meant to be a generational leap. The One X is still a fine console. More of a mini-Series X.

Flight Simulator obviously wasn't possible on last gen machines, probably the best looking console game ever made. Playing it even on the Series S is truly spectacular and a clear leap over last gen.
Hopefully Xbox are moving on to next gen only after Halo Infinite so next year should really start to show us the difference as they don't need to continue to pander to last gen specs as Xcloud offers them a simple way out.

I mean there’s diminishing returns and also the fact you’re coming from a midgen refresh, which last gen is the first time such a thing happened with home consoles.

That’s why I didn’t bother getting the One X, by the time it was a reasonable price ($300 around 2019), I knew real next gen would be right around the corner. Glad I waited and saved my money for the Series X. Mid gen refreshes were a mistake made to sell people another console and ended up screwing over the quality of many titles on the base machines for many players still playing on them, since devs started targeting PS4Pro and X1X; optimizing for base consoles was put by the wayside.

The OneX/PS4Pro were the real disappointments, claiming huge upgrades but still hobbled by the shitty Jaguar CPUs.

Now on my Series X I get upcoming next gen games and Xbone games with even better enhancements than the One X.

It doesn't matter how much or how little things improve or change there will always be people that are disappointed by everything around them.

The new consoles are just fine. Play some games and stop worrying about how much better they are than the last ones.

100%.
This problem seems to be reserved for people who got the midgen refreshes.

No i had a mid gen refresh and it was loud as fuck and still ran games at 30fps with slow ass loading times.

There is no version of the ps4 that competes with ps5 in terms of anything

I disagree. This generation feels like a bigger refresh than going from PS360 to Xbone/PS4.

The near complete removal of loading screens is bigger than any resolution bump. 60 FPS has finally become the norm, not the exception. And the DualSense is the biggest leap in controller advancement in decades.

I also highly doubted the ray tracing on $400-$500 consoles, but games like Ratchet and Clank and Forza Horizon 5 look amazing with it.

I'm heavily invested in my Ps5, having played many games, and I agree 100% with the OP's opinion. These new systems are disappointing outside of their CPU's and faster loading due to SSD. EVERY SINGLE GAME HAS STRUGGLED WITH TUNNING CROSS GEN GAMES AT 4K/ULTRA SETTINGS.

That was the expectation among most that 4k/60 on last gen or cross gen being possible but we havnt gotten close. It's either quality mode or performance, never both. There's going to be people telling me that my expectations were too high but this was the belief of many leading up to their consoles. Now we have the benefit of hindsight.

Returnal has 1/4 of the resolution of RDR2 on One X. When was there a gen where games lose so many pixels vs the past gen???
Comparing a late gen game made by a seasoned developer with an infinite budget and im sure an incredibly long development time vs an indie studio (at the time of development) on a new IP and a new genre is bizarre af

I agree that 2 years from now we will laugh at these launch year games as being described as "next gen".

These systems have 2 things working against them... diminishing returns for power AND the cross gen business model. Being blown away by launch title graphics might never happen again for any console.

2 years from now we'll have an Unreal 5 demo of some grass, to go with the desert rocks.

The SSD alone is a generational leap. Yes how quickly we forget- the ps4pro had a HDD.

I actually had to use an old laptop a few weeks ago so I have living memory of those barbaric times.

Diminishing returns. The next upgrade will be smaller unless there's some big breakthrough in tech.
And to be fair we've hardly had a lot of true next gen games. The few like Ratchet and Demon Souls have looked and performed great for early exclusives, offering a noticeable visual upgrade while still having a 60fps mode.

If you were expecting mindblowing next gen graphics at native 4K, 60fps and with full ray tracing support for $400 you were setting yourself up for disappointment.

I've got the Series X and the short loading times plus the frame rate boosts have justified the console for me personally.

I meant the only ones complaining are from the ones that had a midgen refresh, I’ve never seen anyone that complains about it that came from a base console.

You know OP, I have a PS5 now, I had both pro models last gen, and I think too that the pro were really good for their money!

In one hand, you could stick with them until the next pro (or at least 2023). On the other hands, the upgrades are really worth it (games are more stable and somehow closer to the devs original vision, I guess).

It's immaterial, the way of producing games is still the same, the crossgen thing is a red herring. The engines are scalable, having a previous gen version doesn't affect much. If something like nanite actually begins to be used and fulfills the promises of the tech demo, then we might talk about something else, but even then, that comes at a cost of 1440p at 30 fps. It's just a very modest jump. Only 5 times jump in performance from the previous gen.

I'm happy with the machine, I like the games, but it's a generation without a wow factor and I think it will stay like this.

These systems allow 60 fps and a wide FOV for Destiny and COD

That is game changing for people who play those games.

Well worth the $500

My one x and pro would have exploded trying that.

Also ignores things like Quick Resume and load times in general. There was always going to be diminishing returns with regards to graphics but it great see the significant boosts in quality of life features.
Yes, completely. Sony and MS both are embracing backwards compatibility this time around as well. As a whole the user experience on both consoles is light years ahead of where PS4 and Xbox One were at launch in 2013.

We're only a year into this gen. Things will improve vastly in the next 12 months, I think.

Will be interesting to see the comparison of Horizon FW on PS5 vs PS4.

For me it's very disappointing that almost all cross gen games need to run at Ps4pro resolution and quality to achieve 60fps.

So, until now, that's Ps5 for me: a 60fps Ps4Pro. I hope it will show some next gen muscle next year.

I think your forgetting the load times experience on certain last gen games. That in itself is a really big generational leap. Also need to give it time for this console life cycle to mature. The pandemic has probably not helped either getting some next gen games out earlier but it's only been 12 months. There is enough patched and enhanced last gen games to justify the new console also.

Hold onto your panties
Someone else would know the specific specs more detailed than myself but I'm sure had there been a Pro version of PS3 or an 'S' version of XBOX 360 -- people would have been saying the same of the 1st gens of PS4 and X Box One. There's like a 3-year difference in the time of development of the PS4 original and PS4 Pro - for instance. That 3-years gave a lot of time of engineers, developers, and marketing to improve on the existing product to make their peak performance upscaled extensions. Now, we've barely had a year with PS5 and XBOX Series X to start drawing up the conclusion that the upgrades are disappointing.
