So far, Series X and PS5 are pretty disappointing upgrades over One X and PS4Pro

I've found it to be underwhelming as well with the exception of the speed of both SSDs.

I don't think it's a hardware issue as much as it is some of the games.

In a world where The Witcher 3 exists on both Nintendo Switch and PS4 I don't necessarily believe "generational leap" means "impossible for the game to run on weaker hardware in some form".

I think the leap is huge and I couldn't imagine going back to them fucking gross 30fps boxes.

But on a serious note PS4 Pro & Xbox One X combined sold less than 10 million as far as I know & shouldn't be used to gage the generation jump.

Returnal has 1/4 of the resolution of RDR2 on One X. When was there a gen where games lose so many pixels vs the past gen???
What a ridiculous and desingenous take. Then all games on Series S aren’t next-gen as well since they lose pixels compared to One X and Series X? And it’s not like they have 4K checkerboard from 1440p temporal upsampling as Returnal has. Ridiculous. Cringe, my dude.

Half of Xbox players are on Series S. I guess they’re all on last-gen because of pixel count. 🤦‍♂️

Witcher 3 on switch vs. Ps4 is definitely a generational gap, visually speaking. As far as ports go, I mean it's a bigger difference than any dreamcast/ps2 > N64 conversion.

I have played that version to completion on a TV and I saw it hit 480p at least once :messenger_hushed:

Then of course PC has 4k and one/two notches better settings and 60 fps ; that feels like a generation and a half worth of difference at least.

Point being, just because a ps5 game can run on a ps4 doesn't mean it should, and I say that with the utmost respect for the switcher 3 port. Also, the ssd is the differing factor here, which in terms of game design will surely make some ps5 > ps4 conversions impossible.

When was the last time almost every single game has been 60fps for a year or so? Never? Yeah, I think they're great and it's the first time I haven't felt like I'm really missing out playing on a console instead of upgrading my PC (which isn't really possible anyway).

So Crysis warhead at 1080p is less impressive than 007 nightfire at 4k? :messenger_beaming:

You sound like a man that has not played returnal.
Did I say that? I quoted someone talking about resolution. And for sure the resolution of Crysis is not more impressive than the resolution of 007!
Comparing a late gen game made by a seasoned developer with an infinite budget and im sure an incredibly long development time vs an indie studio (at the time of development) on a new IP and a new genre is bizarre af
One the same hardware I would agree. But is 1/4 on a next hardware vs a 4/4 on a last gen. 1/4!!! 25%. When did that happened before?
Returnal has 100 times more polygons than RDR2. If you think higher pixel count is next-gen, I pity your soul.
Source of that amount of polys for both? And only more polys makes stuff more next gen??

I wouldn’t say I’ve seen the wins in graphics to be notable but frame rates, load times, resolutions are improved across the board. Plus QoL like quick resume is great. Well worth it to me. It’s not like it cost much more than a XOX. Plus future proofed. Once specific XSX games are made, I expect to see some graphical candy by then too.

I didn't say anything about being or not "next-gen", dude. Chill.

It's worth pointing out here that even if red dead X1X is 4k, it uses a really, really heavy TAA that negates some of 4k's benefit, and not only that but Returnal uses a reconstruction technique to help it look cleaner than just a regular 1080p. So it definitely is not as big of a difference as you're implying, putting the apples and oranges comparison aside.

Returnal is absolutely a technical jump over last gen and it does so at 60 fps.

I don't disagree. But my original quote was about resolution only being a next-gen factor when the opposite is happening in other games.

My last gen go-to console was primarily the Xbox One X, with some occasional gaming on PS4 Pro on the side.
I got myself a PS5 and a Series X a couple of months ago. I have to say, if you don't have a 120Hz monitor, my experience so far on these consoles has been pretty... meh. They feel more like One X2 and PS4 ProPro. Especially One X has spoiled with with great IQ for cross gen games.
I hope these consoles start to put out games that showcase why you need a Series X or a PS5.
What can I play on these things that will wow me? I have Forza Horizon 5 in my living room on my Series X and in my bedroom on my One X. Sure I see some difference but it's not a generational leap.
Hard disagree.

From a technical stand point, i disagree. I wish I could play all my PC games on my PS5, because it's more powerful than my PC.

From a games stand point, yeah it's a slow drive, but they're coming.

To start with - RDR2 is not an "effects" heavy game. 40-60K polygons at most and at 30fps on consoles. Weak.

One monster in Returnal is made of the same amount of polygons - when there's 10 monsters making a bullethell lightshow, that's around a million polygons. No game (yet) comes close to showcasing effects like Returnal - not even close.

Are you comparing the amounts of polygons characters are made of? Is this the early 2000s?

And this changes that fact that its 1080p native how?

Loving The Series X.

FH5 on it really is a generation better. But you’re comparing things to the mid gen refresh. What’s the point in that?

If you call this early 2000's - ok?

With so many polygons expecting anything higher than 1080p is just plain stupidity.
As a man of culture, I enjoy tentacle porn too, but my point is that comparing polygon amounts is something we did in the early 2000s. It hasn't been a relevant comparison point in... forever.

i expect near perfect IQ over more polygons. I see no point in having gazillions of blurry polygons...
That statement hurts all shmups lovers out there.

But with Returnal it's a valid argument for why it's not running in higher resolution.

The boost to 60fps and instant loading is the big thing about next gen. However I feel like many games when playing in 60fps never hit near 4K. It's usually 1440p and 60fps. Of course for me framerate is king so I'll always use 60fps option but it would have been nice to have 60fps with fidelity mode all in one but I guess that's what the mid gen upgrade will allow. It seems like the jump from 1080p to 4k was just too big of a jump with TVs that our consoles can't handle the resolution upgrade yet.

And I don't think you'll ever understand what that was like unless you were there and were the appropriate age.

"OK Boomer!"

I'll show myself out.
The generational leaps the first few decades were great, you did really have to be there! Going to the toy store and seeing Super Mario Bros. for the first time, when I had a 2600 at home... Just wow. Thunder Force III on the Genesis, when the plebs were still playing NES... Downloading this ballsy new game called Doom that instantly made the SNES and Genesis look like antiquated dogshit (hey, the SNES DID get a port!)... Walking into the arcade and seeing Virtua Fighter 2... Installing that first Voodoo Card and firing up GLQuake... These youngn's have no clue, lol.

Op isn't wrong, it's more evolutionary than revolutionary, and not the obvious jump of some previous generations.

That said I felt the previous generation already had some amazing looking games, so more of the same at faster loading times and better frame rates is still a good thing.

That's not a leap. Double Dragon to Street Fighter 2... Now THAT'S a fucking leap.

Opposite for me:
- 120 fps modes? First time ever.
- RT already? Yes.
- FPS boost, autoHDR, quick resume? Excellent.
- Dualsense? Rock my world harder.

The games will come and I think that is more a product of COVID. But I have to say that thus far I have enjoyed everything these systems have offered thus far.

Games: Ratchet, Demon Souls, FH5, Returnal. Mmmmmmm

Well sure if you base your experience on Forza 5 Series X vs One X. It's the same game with double the framerate. But I'd say on PS5 the experience is often more impressive thanks to more games with RT, 2-3 seconds loadings and dualsense improvements.

It's a unsurprisingly stupid take for someone who bought a One X right before this gen launched.

I only had a original One by the end of last gen. It was awful.

The games could look better, but no one wants 30 fps anymore. It just hurts sales.

I ditched the last gen in favor of a PC in 2017, got tired of 30fps, long loads and sluggish menus. This current gen in comparison f*cking delicious, I don't know what you are expecting, but for me, this was a much greater jump then the last time.

Today we have CPU's that doesn't suck, 60fps as pretty much standard, great IQ, SSD and silk smooth Dashboards. PS5 had Ratchet and Clank, Returnal and Demon Souls at first year, next year looking even better. Xbox is gearing up to have an amazing generation, Forza Horizon 5 and Flight Sim are amazing...

I'm very happy with my PS5. Among the things I'm happy with is I get to play a console that doesnt sound like a jet engine. I guess because I only had an OG PS4, the jump is quite significant.

Right now a series x upgrade from a one X is a waste imo. Nothing that really makes you want to upgrade now but to wait for a revision. At least the PS5 have demon souls. Still too early for most to upgrade especially from a one X and Pro. If you have a one original/s or a regular ps4 then MAYBE.

Couldn't disagree more.

I had to use my Xbone One X last month for a bit and it was fucking painful after using the XSX for a year now. If anything it just showed me how much better of an experience these new console are than the last.

Like many people said already, the SSD alone is worth the upgrade.

If you are looking for some sort of "leap" in terms of fidelity, you are going to have a bad time for the next 5-6 years.

lol thats because no one is making next gen games at the moment. the best we got is ratchet and aside from some level switching, it does pretty much nothing new. They also wasted over half of the GPU on trying to hit native 4k like a bunch of morons.

The problem is the developers and publishers who have both gone creatively bankrupt chasing a few million at your expense. they dont care you bought a fancy new console. they still need to leech every single dollar out of last gen owners. this happens every gen. only this time, the first party publishers have turned into money hungry leeches themselves which is hilarious because they are the ones selling us this expensive console.

The games will come in 2023 and beyond. half way through the gen. Blame has to be put on the shoulders of creators with clout not standing up to the publisher and really vouching for next gen owners and developers who want to create something new. Guys like Cory Barlog who had the chance to push for next gen but settled for last gen. Forza seems to have shattered every record. Everyone loves it. But thats another game that started dev in 2018. Surely 3 years is enough time to make a next gen only game. No one wants to go all out at the moment. It sucks and is slowly killing the industry. Im glad Jimbo and Phil get their yachts though.
