So far, Series X and PS5 are pretty disappointing upgrades over One X and PS4Pro

Biggest difference is 60 FPS in pretty much every game.

And loading. And the DualSense.
You see… I look at 60fps a lot different than you. I see 60fps and think…. Wow, they really could’ve done more. 60fps makes me think the game could’ve looked better, but they decided to use the extra power to pump out more frames.

If this is the 60fps mediocre generation, I’ll be very sad as a gamer. I wanna see game changing stuff like how TLOU2 was able to run on the base PS4 or how insane DriveClub still looks to this day and even though the game kinda sucked, my jaw still drops when I see The Order 1886. Where are these types of games on the new generation? Even Infamous Second Son blew my mind when I first saw it. That was stuff that would never be able to run on PS3.

How we have Rift Apart and besides the portals, I think this game could definitely had run on the PS4 Pro at 1440p/30 (similar to Spider Man on PS4 Pro), you would just have to wait for loading screens.

Almost as if there are a whole 2 years between the One X and Series X. I don't understand how the graphics aren't a gen apart....

Other than load times, it's not exactly feeling like a generational leap over previous gen. It'll get there, but there's always early adopter tax. Always.

this new generation just reach 1 years old. better to wait atleast until middle of generation before make any conclusion.

Opposite for me:
- 120 fps modes? First time ever.
- RT already? Yes.
- FPS boost, autoHDR, quick resume? Excellent.
- Dualsense? Rock my world harder.

The games will come and I think that is more a product of COVID. But I have to say that thus far I have enjoyed everything these systems have offered thus far.

Games: Ratchet, Demon Souls, FH5, Returnal. Mmmmmmm

While I disagree (somewhat) with the post I love the enthusiasm for this gen, it has been fun still so far.

Every new gen there is always a thread like this. We're in launch year which always looks unimpressive compared to the middle and end of it.
dreamcast/ps2 blew away the ps1/64 right out the gate,
xbox 360/ps3 took some time to really get going but by gears of war it was clear the jump was huge
ps4/xbone was huge off the bat,
but remember he is going against the pro/one x which were both pretty beefy upgrades, so for most people going ps4/one to ps5/xsx they'll get a better upgrade
personally, I haven't played the new consoles live yet (not terribly interested until the libraries offer exclusives or last-gen starts to be more of shadow of mordor and less of rise of the tomb raider ) but all videos aren't blowing me away or anything, but again I'm going form one x/pro and haven't looked at a base console version of games in years, so I'm not seeing the full gen jump because I'm not looking at it

My last gen go-to console was primarily the Xbox One X, with some occasional gaming on PS4 Pro on the side.
I got myself a PS5 and a Series X a couple of months ago. I have to say, if you don't have a 120Hz monitor, my experience so far on these consoles has been pretty... meh. They feel more like One X2 and PS4 ProPro. Especially One X has spoiled with with great IQ for cross gen games.
I hope these consoles start to put out games that showcase why you need a Series X or a PS5.
What can I play on these things that will wow me? I have Forza Horizon 5 in my living room on my Series X and in my bedroom on my One X. Sure I see some difference but it's not a generational leap.
In terms of CPU GFLOPS increase, PS5 CPU is about 4X over PS4's CPU, hence 30 fps to 60 fps boost consumes half of the CPU's resource when running the same game code.
PS4 CPU = 102 GFLOPS
PS5 CPU = 409 GFLOPS (PC Ryzen 7 3700X's 8 core Zen 2 has about 1,126 GFLOPS**).

Don't expect Crackdown 3's Xeon Broadwell-E's destructive physics scale running on the local game console.

**Theoretical GFLOPS for Ryzen 7 3700X, PC Zen 2 has the full AVX unit count.
(32 FLOPS per cycle x 4,400 Mhz) x 8 cores = 1126 GFLOPS.
(32 FLOPS per cycle x 4,200 Mhz) x 8 cores = 1075 GFLOPS.

This is usually the case with new consoles until the games fully transition. Unfortunately, because of the chip shortage, you're seeing a much heavier dependence on last gen than usual. I recommend playing Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart if you want to be wowed. It's currently on sale on PSN.

Does no one remember Cod Ghosts at 720p on Xbox one?

I mean the dualsense is kinda meh (with the obvious and awesome exception of just being a much better controller in general than the DS4). But yeah, the sooner we say goodbye to 30fps the better. Even Rachet and clank at 40fps in quality mode is an improvement. Devs are getting craftier by the day

We’re never going to have that rush of seeing generational graphical upgrades like we saw with the ps2 after the ps1 and the xbox 360 after the ps2. That era is over. From here on out it’ll be incremental improvements.

I really can't disagree enough. Sure, graphically we haven't seen a huge step up from the One X or PS4 Pro, but quality of life is so much better. By the end of last gen the insanely long load times in games like RDR 2 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey had basically pushed me away from playing. Now with quick resume and fast NVMe drives I'm playing more than I ever. The extra graphics oomph in games like FH5 is just icing on that delicious cake. I'm also excited to see games take advantage of real CPUs this time around once we move past the cross gen period

Every game I have chosen to play on PS5 has had a 60FPS or better option. An option that was mostly nonexistent last gen. That justifies the purchase enough for me. You're going to be disappointed if you think everything is going to be native 4K. Consoles need to hurry up and implement a DLSS equivalent to get the best of both worlds.

Xbox Series X is pretty great (I don't have a PS5). The benefits are for many previous gen games and BC for now, we did not get that many optimized games, not even speaking of games entirely built for Series X. But it will eventually happen. It is a slow start, but still makes for a better experience for every single game I already owned.

Well their main advertising was pretty much "play old games in higher resolution and with shorter loading times" and people somehow got super hyped for that.

Not gonna mention the obvious like Ratchet or Returnal, but Astro room alone, gives the needed generational leap.

To me the least felt generational leap was between PS3 to PS4 you dont feel the jump it is like evolution not Revolution, but the PS5 from the start you feel it is different even in the cross gen

It'll still be a good leap, we just have to wait until games are being made from the ground up for these consoles

If you call this early 2000's - ok?

With so many polygons expecting anything higher than 1080p is just plain stupidity.
'It is' higher than 1080P in processing requirements and image quality, it uses some form of advanced reconstruction to reach 4K. No reason to choose something like 1296P with basic upscale for the sake of it when the result in IQ is worse.

I don't get how anyone could feel this way. Every game I've played on ps5 has ran at 60fps and most with a high resolution. Ps5 Games look amazing on my big ass 75 inch tv, PS4 pro looked like ass most of the time. Plus the noise!!!!
It's worth it just for the noise reduction lol.

I'm happy. In screenshots there is little difference but playing games with near instant loading and nice framerates is great.

I know I'll miss out on some bangers but I can't go back to 30fps now.

This is the first time since PS1 that I've bin happy with the power of a new console. PS4/Xbox one was garbage tech.

First, we are still in the Crossgen. Then faster loading times(both consoles), far more responsive controller(Ps5), quick resume(xbox) are clear impromements beyond graphics.

How could you not be disappointed ? Look at God of War sequel, Ragnarok. On 8x more powerful console looks identical to GOW 2018 lmao
I recently purchased that, my first ever God of War game, haven't got around to it yet...too hooked on Mass Effect 2 and all things Forza Horizon 5.....

Those figures for PS5 are clock to clock I presume? Cause PS5 CPU is only slightly slower than desktop Ryzen.

The SSD alone is worth the upgrade...

I don't know how anyone is still playing on that spinning disk trash
I still play my PS4 Pro along side my Series S, it’s really not a problem unless you’re a massively anal nerd.

I keep telling my friends don’t worry that you can’t get a PS5 yet because I’ve had one for nearly a year and done not much but play PS4games on it. And the games I play most, GT Sport and Red Dead 2 don’t even have 60fps patches. The only game I bought and enjoyed recently was the Ghost of Tsushima expansion and it’s a PS4 game. I’m just hanging on for Gran Turismo 7 and even that’s a cross gen title.

But we’ll see the potential of these in 2-3 years more. PS4 had a real slow start too with a bunch of 1080p 30fps PS3 games rereleasing.

Garbage just like last gen. This time, though, I’m not going to be a sucker. I’ll wait for the Pro or revision versions.

Happily playing on my PC in the meantime. If you don’t have a PC, might as well jump into a new console gen asap.
PS4 is leaps and bounds ahead of PS3 and it was really obvious once we got through the release year and a half drought. hopefully this is the same.

409 GFLOPS... PS5's CPU runs at 3.2 GHz? Will you cut the BS FUD, please?
hence 30 fps to 60 fps boost consumes half of the CPU's resource when running the same game code.
Also, do you have any proof of this? Show us PS5's CPU resource usage running BC 60fps boosted games.

I know it's "upscaled" and that's perfectly fine for me. The game is stunningly beautiful when in battle and that's what matters.

To be honest I feel like we at a level of graphics where I'm satisfied. Red Dead 2, Last of Us 2 are such as high bar, all I want is games with the same fidelity but at 60fps and level design around slow hardrives. We are currently getting patches for games like Last of Us 2 and God of War which makes those games perfect for me. Now all I'm just waiting for games not designed around hardrive level design (giving through tight sports in caves, long elevator rides, cutscenses to mask load times). Once that's resolved in pretty much satisfied.

For me, to be able to put away my PS4 Pro and not have to hear that jet engine noise anyway was well worth getting the PS5 for.

For me too but that tells more about the Pro which i've always hated. The fan noise, the lack of an UHD drive etc.

We'll have to wait and see. God of War 2018 was one of the best looking PS4 titles anyway but its stuck at 1080p/30. I was impressed by the game on PS5 at dynamic 4k/60. I don't think Ragnarok is going to look worse.

Some people are really never satisfied are they? Some of the next gen patches we've gotten for games has gotten me to go deep on games now that there is hardware to match their vision. VALHALLA, SPIDERMAN, DS, GOT. . . the list goes on and on. Going from PS3 to PS5 is an insane leap, and yes PS4 showed what COULD be possible and that's what you're getting with that middle generation transition.

. . . this is from someone with a 120 HZ TV that limits things to 60 whenever I can.

Crazy. Crazy take.

60fps ruins a lot of games for me. TLOU2 at 60 just looks funky and ruins the cinematic nature of the game. Same with spiderman, the animations just look weird at 60.

I prefer to play at 30 whenever I can to avoid that weird soap opera look.

The only time I play at 60 is when the 30fps mode has bad frame times like House of Ashes and Little Nightmares 2 because that crap is more annoying.

It took a year and a half after launch for the PS4 to be worth buying (thanks to Bloodborne), and there was no backwards compatibility to tide you over in the meantime. The Xbone was never worth buying. I'd say current gen has that beat handily.

There's no doubt that some some of the impact will have been lost if you've been playing at 1440p+ since 2017 rather than 1080p or even 900p.

That's quite a big difference on a big screen, so it's just unavoidable that that part of the leap is lost now.

Otoh the main answer is really just to hang on and wait until the games start flowing. Ratchet and one or two others have shown that a big leap is still ultimately going to happen.

It was already fairly obvious even in its first year. Watch Dogs, COD AW, and Shadow of Mordor all looked vastly better on PS4 than their PS3 versions. AC Unity also blew Black Flag clean out of the water in that first year.
