Confessions of a GameFAQs troll, AMA

I loved going to Gamefaqs to read character battle fanfiction while wearing my favorite furry costume but then a bunch of weirdos came and ruined the site.

This is no laughing matter. I’m saving myself for my real life Tifa. A woman with giant jiggling tits, the body of a porn star, yet the personality of a sweet innocent girl next door who has never known the touch of a man. She will see through my antisocial behavior and initiate a relationship with me, eventually resulting in coitus.

I have standards. I am willing to wait.
I hear the Tesla bot maids are already in production ..

Wait, Gamefaqs had boards? (I'm kidding. I only ever went there for the juicy faqs made by users such as xX_FraGKiller69_Xx)

There's a dude on the GameFAQs Animal Crossing board who is an intentional troll. He posts in any topic in which a poster comments about time traveling to exclaim that time travelling in AC is a violation of what the developers intended for the game, and regularly makes "joking" posts about how the villager Ankha is based on black magic. This immediately descends into religious debates about Christian themes in the game, while he responds using profanity and insults.

In true intentional troll form, many of the board's users post angry replied to every one of his posts, and his threads (all nonsense) usually end up with over 100 replies. I have to give him credit, while I never reply to his troll posts and replied, he will sometimes reply directly to a post or comment that I make with a legitimate reply, and then I will reply to these - which then brings 4 or 5 more users to post angry replies. He is a pro at making every post he participates in about him.

And, he even has a whole intentional troll persona, as he often refers to posters in his replies as "my dear" and claims to be a 70 year old non-White guy who was banished from America on trumped-up charges and he now lives abroad in an undisclosed country.

I used to post on GameFaqs, i used to write longer replies, even in a list topic where they make the daily "top 10 games of the generation" i used to list my games and provide an explanation and context to whatever i say, even a poll topic where they compare 2 games, i kept doing it, on every topic, every piece of opinion i give it will be followed by an explanation to give it context and meaning instead of it being just a pointless opinion. You could say i gave my replies more depth, while watching most users never bother, its fine, i do it for myself and they are not obliged to give that context about their opinion, but eventually you realize how shallow that place is, most topics are just shallow, bait topics, trolls as you said and overall war, fanboy and hate rants. Despite that you can find some good discussions, and you can have fun teaming up with a side against another one, i still browse it sometimes but i dont treat it seriously nor do i write posts there.
The forums are terrible, the one good thing about them is that they are old so they are easy to browse, they dont take power to load and they are easy to understand, but everything else feels awful, the polls for example are terrible at how they are made, you cannot trust any poll there because anybody can vote in the default option, so they can be rigged quite easily.
The trolls are attention whores, and most of them are terrible at it, the shitposters are so poor its laughable, there are a lot of them who keep trolling and it always ends up at making pointless discussions, when some troll gets banned they are back within few weeks, i have been there for 3 years and i know a user who got banned more than 50+ times no joke and he always comes back, they dont ban permanently unless its something they deem serious. It's obvious the admins never cared about civil discussions otherwise things would have changed.
I remember i wrote a lot of good suggestions to the admins on few topics but most of the time im met with answers like nobody takes them seriously or that its not needed, i blame the admins for the lazy forums they have become.
Also to add the site is dominated by certain fanbases, so its hard to ignore the bias, its like getting into a fan club, its not a good place for general discussions. You will rarely find someone who isnt miserable. I noticed that general boards tend to have the worst users in them, while the specific boards contain normal users who are your average internet user which is fine. You can also create as many alts as you want, so that should give you an idea about the place lol. You can be the most annoying troll and you can post with zero bans. The guides are good but nowadays in the era of Youtube and videos its not needed, and the ratings, database and interface are all outdated and below today standard.
The place has low traffic though, it has a lot more older people than younger ones which indicates that its slowly dying, thus explaining the low ban rate.

Overall i would say its not the worst but its not a good place either, its like in the middle all places considered, i have seen most gaming communities, I would place it above ResetEra and /v/
NeoGaf is so far the best one.

I agree that the overall quality of the GameFAQs forums isn't great.

There are times though in boards of particular games that you get enthusiastic and reasonable observations from really genuine fans of a particular game. This has kept me going back daily (along with NeoGAF which I also check daily) for many years now.

I used to troll the MetalThrone forums. My name was the DurandilAvenger, and I used to go to the Black Metal boards and ask people to rank Slipknot's discography. I claimed that my cousin Ray (completely fictitious) was in a band in Petaluma (I live nowhere near there) and was in tight with Corey Taylor as part of a Bay Area Punk/Black Metal fusion. I typed in exclusively terrible English and blamed it on the Blackberry I was using (I was on a PC) I triggered so many people.

That’s pretty genius. I’m cracking up just thinking about it. Something about AC fans raging at this guy’s obviously made up BS is hilarious.

Ya - this dude is a troll's troll. During quiet periods on the board, single posts of his get more replies than full days worth of posts.

Some of the less popular boards can be very helpful and fun communities. But I guess once you hit some critical mass it becomes a dumpster fire. Trolls get handsomely rewarded with the attention they seek and so they come to dominate the conversation.

I love going to gamefaqs, pulling up old games and going as far back as I can in the board history to read hype threads. Some are really funny.
LOL yeah I just went back to the early Wii U days. Some great memories. Shortly after the reveal they convinced themselves the Wii U CPU was IBM POWER7 (which was an absolute beast, 200 watts 1.2B transistors) when in reality it was a tri-core version of the Wii CPU.

So much talk about how the games were all going to be 1080p and how PS4 would have to cost $1000 in order to significantly outperform it.

Best part is Miyamoto himself even said something like “Wii U games are not going to look significantly better than current gen games.” And the fanboys response was “well he was just being modest… he’s Japanese!”

Ask me about my Stream Deck
One comedic example was when the Darksiders devs said something like “we are happy with the hardware, we didn’t have to make any compromises in order to bring Darksiders to Wii U”. One of the prominent fanboys there took that to mean “they have the PC version of Darksiders running on the Wii U dev kit at 1080p 60 FPS with all settings maxed out, PS3 and Xbox 360 can’t come close”. (I remember that quote because I eventually made it my signature).
Having briefly worked QA on that title I can say without a doubt that is the most hilarious thing I've read in quite a while.

Too many pansy ass cowards talk shit and when they get absolutely BODIED in an argument they run to mods like their momma.
Gamefaqs is cancer.
My time there has dropped by 95% and all the better for it.

Especially the playstation board (any) they're the most toxic of all.

So now that I look back it was actually Darksiders 2 that came out around Wii U launch time. Then “Warmastered” came out a few years later. Which one did you work on?

I used to troll/participate in the Megadeth forums years ago, actually someone from there introduced me to this place and here I am. It was a guy from Cyprus pretty sure, wonder if he's still around. Probably not I guess.

OP, who is the slyest troll on NeoGAF?
I dunno I don’t give trolls any attention here as this place has some good moderation and decent conversation going on.

I will say there was one masterful troll who always used to post technical nonsense and draw people into these long debates.

I remember one about how 60 FPS doesn’t matter and what really matters is the total number of frames (or some nonsense like that). Then he posted 2 gifs purported to demonstrate this. They were both 60 FPS. Huge argument ensued.
