DF: Battlefield 2042: PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S - The Digital Foundry Tech Review

Pretty much the same as what VGtech showed, settings are the same but Series X holds higher resolution when pushed, unsurprising.
Looks like frame time spikes happen on all consoles in 128 player matches.
Playing the last gen versions on new consoles gives you a locked 60fps.
Nope not what they said in the article.

"There's some occasional stutter on all consoles, though it seems worst on Series X: 50ms pauses occur regularly, although these can last for hundreds of milliseconds at worst."

Series x has a higher resolution but performs worse and tanks with stutter the worst.

"and it's here where we have problems, with all consoles dropping performance in intense battles, particularly with many players present or when flying aircraft. On PS5 and Series S these problems aren't too bad - there's generally a pretty solid 60fps with occasional dips"

Series X not grouped into the the 'not to bad' group so therefore is clearly worse.

Choosing resolution over performance again.

From vg tech

Xbox Series X: 3733x2100 and PS5 3584x2016. 8%
Xbox Series X: 3648x2052 and PS5 3456x1944. 10%
Xbox Series X: 3342x1880 and PS5 3093x1740. 16%
The difference in resolution spotted by VGTech it's pretty laughable compared the 1800p Vs 2016p stated by DF...but it's not the first time the DF approximations are wider than what VGTech provide (Metro Exodus).

The only time I get a small stutter on PS5 is when the rocket on Orbital map is about to explode from the hurricane. It's a pretty chaotic moment so that makes sense.

Looks like it's hitting harder on Series X, the kind of stutters that not even VRR can save. DICE needs to look into it.

Look at those frame-times!

Seems problems with next gen machines..both..could be the crossgen work that devs have to do it?

that is a bug...just like happened with the 0 fps in cod on the PS5..not to be taken into account for the long ru. Surely it will be fixed at the first patch

I think it's very doubtful to be honest. If we were talking about slightly lowered performance then maybe but performance doesn't fall off a cliff like that unless there's something else going on.

Don't you think it's strange that DF did a very hasty analysis for such a big power house title? Hmm, I wonder why that is.!!

Ok but this is vanguard...also crossgen..is the crossgen thing obvious

Dunno, but I think it's chance more than anything. Performance drops like these are more typical for when the system runs out of memory and it flat out shouldn't happen simply because of system differences.

It's either that or plain bugs.

Is this an instance where the XSS is holding back the XSX so much that it outperforms it? Or perhaps the XSX version is just buggy and needs a patch. I guess we'll find out.

I'm surprised it held a steady native res of 2160 most of the time on the X & PS5. Just going by how poorly it seems to be optimized for PC I was expecting lower, but I suppose DICE and their partners were able to work better with these new consoles for whatever reason. So that's actually pretty damned cool.

I have always played BF on a PC just out of habit and preference. But this is the first installment where I kind of wish I had opted for the PS5 version, because while the subreddits and twitter communities I frequent are rife with fellow PC players complaining about performance, it seems like the console players are having a grand old time with few issues.

It’s not native 4K but checkerboarded

Yea, even considering it's dynamic, I still wouldn't have expected it to maintain it steadily most of the time. I mean, many people experiencing performance issues on PC have systems that have easily twice the compute of a PS5 or Series X. And they struggle to hit consistently high frame rates at 1440p.

It's obviously a bug, just like Vanguard on the PS5 hitting the same 0fps, I've been playing on Series X and it might happen once every three or four games. Playing with VRR and forcing 120hz output gives you a smooth ride most of the time at the best resolution.
Once the bug is patched it will be in good shape.

Yeah I'm certain that Zen 2 CPUs and RDNA 2 GPUs will most likely be a target. Hopefully the SSDs as well. Glad XSS has those features.
Don’t forget the 4tf with the 12tf just used like a pro console res boost at best.

Why does it matter? Instead of eg. targeting 1440p with massive scene complexity on 12tf with maybe 4K reconstruction, you target 1080p within 4tf limits and forget the rest.

Stuttering aside performance seems worse still, PS5 occasional dips, Series x drops more. Hence why they mentioned just PS5 and Series S as not too bad.

A telling omission.

Stuttering aside, slightly higher res on X with minuscule performance difference, where nobody who is gaming will notice any difference between the two.

Seems to be the average take from games?

All I know is that when I played the demo, I was extremely disappointed with everything - the maps, the performance, the gameplay. Battlefield has got too big for its boots.

Well it surely is not one of the cases where "optimizing for Series S will also improve Series X version", but more a case of "time wasted on Series S should have been used for Series X instead"....

All these big games need multiple patches before they're even anywhere near complete.

Full games on day one are more or less betas, it sucks.

I wonder if this is a power issue. Remember what CERNY said about AMD smart shift. Maybe the CPU hits it's power ceiling and not having a way to throttle it causes instability.
That's an interesting idea. I have another theory: I wonder if this is not a I/O (SSD) issue on XSX caused when streaming data from the SSD during gameplay. XSS wouldn't have the same problem because the assets are quite smaller on that version.

There was the same exact problem (0fps freezes) on Fallout 4 (XB1 version) that was actually fixed using a SSD instead of HDD. Maybe the faster SSD on PS5 'fixes' the problem on that version? It's just a theory, as I actually thing they'll eventually fix the issue.

They missed also CBR works better on PS5 in the long distance. Looking at the trees and the fences. From VGTECH pixels count pics:
PS5
pnS6ot1rp

XSX
pnx1P8sQp
Not sure about the trees but look at the distant grass on the left. Those have clearly higher anisotropic filtering on PS5. I guess this could explain many saying the game looks better on PS5. What's up with those games on XSX with lower AF?

I really like new guy Olivier
I didn't like.
Video of GTA Vice City and San Andreas is very meh comparing GTA III with John
This video is a bit better, but not very far on analyse and tech... + Why complaining 128 players maps for just 3-5 fps when is the core of this Battlefield...

Elanalistadebits said the opposite AF is better on Series X.
Not only does it say that XSX has better AF, it also says that XSX also has better reflections and more stable framerate but that is not mentioned here because they are not interested ..... 😉

It is very very funny to see the same people who requested the ban of ""Elanalistadebits"" as a source here always go to him when they do not want to accept the analyzes of DF or Vgtech. The invention even that PS5 uses another type of scaling when it is exactly the same that DICE has been using since B1. Or that XSX is using VRS, which only reflects that they do not know what it is or how it works ...

?? When DF says "not to bad" it refers to the gaming experience when sttuter is presented. Because according to them it is a problem present in all platforms but much worse in XSX, because you wouldn't like to run into 0fps in the middle of a confrontation.
That is, if they solve the problem of micro-freezing, the performance would be on par in all of them, as reflected in the VGTech table ...

Well, look yourself. Here AF is clearly better on PS5. Just look.
LOL. no, there you are seeing what you want in a game with continuous change of lighting, movement of vegetation, particles, deformation of the terrain ... you even have that the vegetation is random and depending on the game is different.
But well, what has been said, when you see the "" Elanalista "" mentioned and used as a source to the same people who opted for his ban and only in the parts that interest is everything said 😂

Also he seemingly overlooked the road texture being absent on the lower right of the PS5 shot. Lets zoom in to a fence across the map but ignore up close. Typical fanboy right there
Now that's what a bug looks like.
Not loading the correct texture.

But PS5 still has overall better image quality, so that tells you higher resolution doesn't always means better.

If you can't see PS5 has a better image quality, you're an example of the typical fanboy.

Yeah....... not seeing a big difference that would lead to the PS5 looking better. I own both so I really dont care. So I am not biased at all

No

Also can't for the life of me find fences in those pictures. They are also different frames.

Claiming the PS5 has a better image quality is an example of the typical fanboy.

Excellent performance in 64 player mode on all consoles but worse performance in 128 player mode on XSX. They should consider lowering and tweaking the drs to allow a lower range similar to PS5 to allow a more stable performance.

I do wonder what is causing the long frame-time spike on XSX and not XSS. If it is a bug like the checkpoint bug in COD, it should affect all consoles but this one is specific to XSX in 128 player mode.

Am I understanding this correctly?

the game runs fine, except the 128 player mode has a few dips here and there.
DF suggests to install the last gen versions of the game to have a more stable experience
but these don't even support the 128 player mode??

seriously they have to stop suggesting this bullshit. Nobody who owns a current gen console would ever find this solution satisfying.

Does no one bother reading the article?

So the big stutter issues are exclusive to Series X. Before anyone tries to use this for console warring, do remember this does not occur on Series S, so it is almost certainly a bug.
Or the x isn’t able to maintain the resolution it tries to push and the frame rate suffers. I’m pretty sure this has happened before and the devs know VRR is present in x. Once PS5 has VRR they may be able up their target as well. There’s been times where the x has a higher resolution but the ps5 has more detail.

They should consider lowering and tweaking the drs to allow a lower range similar to PS5 to allow a more stable performance.
It’s possible they want it this way or because of VRR they just push it and let that do any work to smooth things out. Another reason to look forward to the PS VRR update.
