Joe Kosinski was going to make that after Tron: Legacy (which is why the original Black Hole poster is in that movie). But Tron underperformed so that was canned.

That is sad...Black Hole would be a great movie these days on the proper hands.

Just got back - great movie. I wasn't sure at first but as it went on I really found myself enjoying it. Honestly I thought Trevor was more of the weak point but Phoebe was great (along with the dad jokes).

Only real part I wish they did better was
how the originals came in.

I also initially feared about it being Phoebe alone stopping Gozer until Egon slowly materialized and I couldn't help smiling.

Both of them edging close to the other 3 OG Ghostbusters so it looked like all four back together firing on Gozer was a great scene.

Really great movie in my opinion.

How did they do Ramis' face? CG or Deepfake? Since he was a ghost it was nowhere near as jarring for this effect so it looked really good.

Yeah, they could have had him show up at the end, and Peter would say “Oscar!” or something, and he could be played by Jonah Hill or some shit.

I was thinking he was gonna come up when they were playing with cards as a quick cameo and said mom really or something that woulda been awesome.

This was great. I'm glad that we finally have Ghostbusters 3. The new characters were good and I liked the story.

Probably cgi like Tarkin in Rogue One. I wish he had said something. One line would have been enough. I understand why he didn't but maybe they could have used some unused dialogue from the 2009 game.

So….was it a box office
flop?
Hard to say at the moment, but it’s doing well so far. It had a budget of $75 million (not including marketing/distribution) and needs to make around twice that amount in order to become profitable. It’s already at $90 million after a week and it’ll make plenty more this weekend, so it’s off to an excellent start. Also need to consider rentals/purchases once it leaves theaters (and toys).

For comparison, Ghostbusters 2016 had a $144 million budget but only made $229 million, so it lost the studio around $60 million.

Just watched it tonight, also my first D-Box seat for a movie. Really enjoyed it. They focused too much on the kids for my liking, but the story was fun, the throwbacks were nice without being 90% of the movie, and the D-Box experience was really cool.

I went in with low expectations but had a great time.

Looks like it's gonna have a strong second weekend. I'm sure it'll have a drop-off in the third weekend, but it looks like it'll easily head past $100M domestic.

That's very impressive and it's a tad unfair to draw a comparison to GB2016..

The pandemic has still kept folks away from theaters and in some cases, some have opted to just..not go anymore and wait for Streaming/Video On Demand.

I feel very strongly that if the pandemic wasn't an issue, it would have been even higher than it is now.

Still, it's very impressive and Sony low-balled on expectations. They have to be thinking of sequels now.

Damn Ghostbusters nailed it's second weekend with 35.3M almost matching Encanto's 40.3M which is less than Ghostbuster's opening 3-day weekend.

I liked the 2016 version , it’s ghostbusters with girls .. ghostbusters was always cheesy .. but what ever . Just because the cast was female doesn’t make it a bad movie ..

woukd be hilarious if true , yes.
Even if it was good, people would hate it cause its all females. That being said. It wasnt very good. It was lazy. Should of have been a 90 million dollar Netflix mini-series at best.

I enjoyed afterlife very much. Villian should have been something else though. I hope they focus on the little girl solving ghost mysteries, than end of the world type of situations.

Any examples of good films with an all female cast that got panned by audiences that didn't deserve it? The only ones I can think of is 2016, Charlie's angels and that oceans one with all women. All three were utter tripe and deserved the criticism they got.

I loved Kate Mckinnon's character. But the rest were garbage. It was a typical Melissa McCarthy joint. It wasn't terrible. But it didn't have the magic the originals had and was extremely gimmicky and didn't really speak to the "science" and occult of the universe like the original series does. Even the Ghostbusters game was better the 2016 movie as it was written by Akroyd and Remis.

Re: Focus on solving ghost mysteries..

The main thing is that the true paranormal expertise and knowledge of the ghost realm was Ray. Is sounded like Podcast might have known a thing or two by classifying Muncher, but, I doubt he knew much. The kids in the family knew nothing of the ghost world and by the end of Afterlife, still didn’t. They just found and figured out the gear on the fly.

I’m not sure whether they want to have Phoebe learning ghost literature, or, focusing on inventing gear, or, just dealing with whatever pops up wherever.

All I know is that I’d hate for any potential Ghostbusters movies to lose the positives this movie had. I definitely do not like the rumors I have read about bringing back Vigo. Let’s not do the.. hey, we brought back GB1 baddies and got away with that, so, why not? thing.

Ghostbusters 2016

This is really the movie a lot of people wanted The Force Awakens to be.

I'd swap GBII and Afterlife but otherwise no lies detected. It was pretty solid, the humor hit, I liked the lead girl a lot, I wasn't too put off by the memberberries. Glad I got to go see it in a theater.

It's out digitally today just watched it again. It's still great.

I think you can see the CGI Egon's face during the opening scene more clearly on the home video 4K Dolby Vision version than in theaters. Saw it on a normal screen, not Dolby Cinema, and his face was darker in the theater from what I can remember.

I was expecting more ghosts and not just a few memberberries ones. Also I think Murrays cameo in 2016 was longer than his few scenes in this one..

So the extras on the home release explain how they did Egon. They had no life casts or digital scans of him so they scanned the original GB 1984 camera negative at super high res to get the base Ramis, and then they aged him up to his 70s.

For most of the Egon scenes, it's Bob Gunton and they put the CG Ramis face over him, but for the scene with the four Ghostbusters lined up and Egon helping Phoebe, it's Ivan Reitman.

BIG SPOILERS IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT.

Finally saw it last night. It was an enjoyable film but I can help but feel a bit underwhelmed at the same. The main plot point is basically the exact same as the original film, two hellhounds required to unlock the gateway for Gozer and the Ghostbusters have to stop it. Paul Rudd = Rick Moranis and Carrie Coon = Signorney Weaver. Absolutely nothing original at all. Obviously the characters are original and their circumstances are different from the original film but I just expected more in terms of the ghostbusting side. And I understand that the lower budget couldn't let them go crazy with ghost designs.

I also feel that the original crew shouldn't have shown up at the end. The entire story was about Phoebe and her learning about her grandfather, it should have 100% stuck with her. When the old farts showed up it completely sucked all the tension out of the scene. It would have worked better if the old crew showed up half way through or 2/3's of the way through so Phoebe could have built her relationship with them.

Two minor nitpicks I have that don't affect the story.
1: When Peter, Ray and Winston were shooting Gozer, why the hell were the hellhounds just sitting there? Shouldn't they have, you know, at least tried to protect Gozer?
2: Phoebe's friend Podcast, he is all about the "unexplained" and proving it. Why in the world wasn't he video recording anything with his phone!!!??? They could have shown the police and Phoebe's mum the evidence.

One tiny miny issue, the gear is locked away at the police station and they release the metal munching ghost to each the lock. A little too convenient for my liking, it's a ghost and can fly through walls, it should have flown away straight away as soon as it was released.

Anyway, I'm interested to see what they do next..

I greatly enjoyed the movie despite the obvious similarities to the OG storyline. I share your feelings on the OG characters showing up, kind of at least. They should have done something to establish they were going, got there, whatever. Just showing up to start busting unannounced was weird. Hoping an extended scene makes it a little more, shall we say, organic.

Didn't they say that Egon took all their hardware as well? So where'd they get their gear? Did I miss something?

I don't specifically remember the details of what he took to be honest. I am certain that (Ray I think) someone said something to that effect. I just don't remember if it was everything or most of everything.

But that's neither here nor there, because your point is good regardless. Even if we just saw old man hands reach into dusty closets to grab tan uniforms, anything would have been better than the cold show up imo.

All that said, I still loved the movie over all.
