I cannot fathom why Nintendo put themselves in this position with the OLED model. Considering the guts are all the same, I can only assume it's the OLED panels themselves that are clogging up the pipeline.
There's a chip shortage for all consoles not just next gen, there's large backlogs on getting anything produced it's not just the panels it's not like even the regular versions of switch are about in massive numbers. After the initial launch batch of oled switches i can't see there been a decent supply any time soon or even into next year. I'm more amazed that the switch keeps selling in this volume surely anyone who was interested in switch in japan surely bought one by now lol.

Then again with more & more devs jumping on making stuff on switch it's probably those new people been lured in as even getting new stuff on playstation is not a done deal anymore.

I look forward to the thread: "What's happening to the Xbox Series consoles in Japan it was only a hundred away from last gen PS4" or something like that then a long thread about whether it's a stock issue or lack of content or both.
applies for the upcoming NPD thread also

Nooooo Xbox, you were the chosen one!

PS5 sales as disgraceful as ever.

Switch doing really well but nothing mindblowing. The only highlight is Pokemon having a good hold and SMT V still appearing on the charts.

Yes. That's just 200k units per week on average.
Even if they could supply japan with over 200k consoles for 4 weeks straight (they would need over 1.2 million for the month) that still has little to do with my original statement of them outselling the xbox annual sales in a week.

Playstation may be struggling in japan but the xbox is still pretty non existent at this point

Xbox yearly sales get outsold by Switch in a week.
Ps yearly sales get outsold by Switch in a month.

How has that nothing to do with each other.
If you just wanted to say Xbox is non existent in Japan, you should have said that.

But the latter hasn’t happened so i don’t see your point lol

The switch averages around 400k consoles a month in japan. What makes you think they are gonna do over 1.2m this month?

Are those numbers good for SMTV? Seems low. Thought this was a huge title in Japan. Hopefully the rest of the world picks up the slack. I did my part!

*EDIT

Went back and looked at the last couple of weeks of Famitsu sales. SMTV seems decent, but should have done better compared to the last two games. It didn't get that Switch boost unfortunately. I'm sure this will come to PC as has been the case with other third party exclusives. Just hope the PC market picks up the slack. It's a great game.

You might as well throw week 2 in January in there also.

In the end you’re kind of proving my point, the fact that you’re doing all this mathing to try and prove the switch can outsell playstations total numbers in a MONTHS time versus a week time of Xbox’s kind of proves how down and out it is for microsoft in the east right now.

I suspect a full turn around once actual people in japan can buy a ps5 and bigger japanese games start coming out. Right now most of the ps5’s hitting japan are being scalped outside the region which is why software sales are low.

Completely different for the Xbox where demand outside of North America has never been on par with playstation

This kills the hardware sales among none enthusiast markets. Sony could be killed in Japan. The lack of PS consoles at POS has a domino effect on software development down the line. At this rate Sony will just be seen as a console no different to an XBOX.

Will never happen because a lot of 3rd party japanese software companies still mostly release their games on playstation. The switch can’t run half the new games coming out from this point on and the xbox isn’t a factor.

People in japan that love genshin, kingdom hearts, yakuza, tales of, persona, final fantasy, all the fighting games etc etc need a playstation.

Unless you assume that nintendo will be the last japanese publisher left standing

Need a Playstation, not necessarily a PS5. There is no reason to upgrade at this point since any game Japanese gamers care about that is NOT on the Switch is on the PS4. Maybe in a year or two if there are any PS5 exclusive games that appeal to Japanese gamers something will change. Until then Japan is Nintendo land.

I remember in the N64 and PS2 era that Nintendo was getting destroyed in Japan - at least in terms of home consoles and software.

Boy have the tables turned.

The issue is how much shelf space PS gets in stores. If the games are not selling, and they are not. Even the games you list are dropping in sales. None of the games you listed are selling like they used to sell. Most of the fighting games that have released on the Switch and PS have sold more on the Switch.

The PS5 now has the same amount of shelf space as the XBox one had at launch in Japan. After 2 years they had no retail space. Retailers like GEO and Joshin are not going to waste retail store space and storage on things that just do not sell.

PS already disappeared from Supermarket stores when the PS4 launched. It is easy to imagine a future where the PS brand has no presence in Japanese stores and loses all mindshare among young gamers in Japan.
And that would be great for the PC market, to be honest. Joshin now has more display area for gaming pcs than Playstation 5.

The minute they put games on PC, PS just became blue version of Xbox.

Not to mention several slights directly to Japan, such as the button swap and a heavy hand with censorship etc.

Top 30

Somebody told me to calm down as the initial post was “only top 10”

Japan really is nintendo's bitch.
Well, there is no other result to be had out of Japan. Given the relatively weak sales of all home consoles after the PS2, even the mighty Wii (something that should have appealed greatly to Japan with it's motion controls and incredibly small size), it's obvious that Japan has been moving away from home consoles for over a decade and a half, now. Unless your system is also portable, you don't have much of a chance there.

Still, I'm sure Sony is fine with selling 8M-9M there, which is still 7M-8M more than the Series will sell. Their move towards powerful home consoles has them selling bucket loads in all other countries.
