Godfall: Challenger Edition to be sold standalone for $15

Many subscribers suggested the inclusion of this version of Godfall was against the spirit of PlayStation Plus, which typically offers "full" games. Indeed, the Challenger Edition was advertised with word of an $45 upgrade offer - to pay and get the main version of Godfall if you liked what you had tried so far.

Today, a spokesperson for developer Counterplay told Eurogamer that the Challenger Edition was "not a trial", but a new cut-price, limited-feature edition.

In a new press release, Counterplay announced that the Challenger Edition would also soon be available for free via the Epic Game Store for a limited time (December 9th - 16th).

After that, the Challenger Edition will be sold for $14.99.

I bought the original version at launch. Only played for it a bit, but am keen to go back and finish.

This Challenger Edition is a bit messy, especially in the case that it's PS+. Should just give the full version to everyone and do the Challenger Edition separately from PS+.

The Godfall: Challenger Edition is a version of the game which lets players try three endgame modes, and provides a sampling of high-end loot and skill points so you can test the game at max level.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Making gamers play the game post ending breaks gamer 101 protocol, it's been happening since Mass Effect 3 for not being pleased with one ending, brah games have 1 ending.

Dev: It's not a trial.

Simply because you can "complete" aspects of the game doesn't somehow mean its a full game. The content is done. its there, you are choosing to not provide the full version of the software.

Call it whatever you want. The word trial still works.

It's a Gearbox published game? Welp expect them to feature Borderlands 3 in PS+ with endgame content only. Actually that would be a good thing considering how awful the story is in that game.

I'm one of the idiots who bought Godfall at launch. But I'll still download this and grab the EGS version.

But it's still just a trail.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
From the same people that brought us paid upgrades and a free trial that starts when you hit download....
To be fair, this is not sonys fault.

Just because the game was console exclusive doesnt mean that Sony is behind this.

Just give us Mortal Coil ps5 and it’s a day. Ps+ has been sucking ass lately. Sony really needs for fork some shit out with all the delays. It ain’t like they are hurting for money over there. I just find it crazy that they would give us the PlayStation four version of mortal coil when it’s a free upgrade to the best of my knowledge. I could be wrong about that but either way it doesn’t really have anything to do with the point I’m making. It doesn’t really make sense to me why they wouldn’t just have both versions.

What fucking bullshit, on both their and Sony's part (I don't pay for PS+ to get fucking trial versions of games). I probably wasn't gonna try this anyway, but now I definitely won't be touching it.

We got Knockout City last month and that game is a ton of fun. It's also cross-platform cross-progression, which means your unlocks travel to whatever platform you play it on. I played it a lot on Xbox when it was on Gamepass and all my unlocks were there when I downloaded the PS+ version. If you haven't grabbed it, do so before it's gone.

Christ. Are companies that dumb to think that gamers don’t see through this stuff? Insulting.

My guess is that they didn't even have to pay the developer for it. Sony gets a free PS+ game and the dev gets advertising for the full game.

That was a bonus game that was available for much longer than a regular PS+ game if I recall correctly, it wasn't part of any monthly lineup.

Driveclub had a special PS+ version that was always available for subscribers to download that was basically a trial of the full game with only one location, 11 tracks, and 10 cars:

It wasn't always available (pretty sure it was not available at the game's release), but yes, it was available for much longer than regular PS+ titles.

I'm not sure many (anyone???) do. I think for most people its a principal thing. We are used to getting crappy games at times. But a crappy trial of a game is a new low for Sony.

It. Is. Free. If you don't want to play the game, play the numerous other games you've gotten for free with PS+ this year.

Well if this goes well expect demos and betas to change name and a charge added in the future.
