Phil Spencer says he spends ‘zero energy’ on console wars - ‘doesn’t envision’ a time when every Xbox user subscribes to Game Pass

I think @kyliethicc point here isn't that Sony doesn't do those things and then talk about themselves as if they don't do those things.
There were simply two options when Sony was moneyhatting the entire Bethesda catalogue for the next few years:
- do nothing and be fucked out of one of the largest publishers for years;
- do a counter move and take the opportunity that was offered.

Bethesda isn't a good example of MS being aggressive in my opinion for that reason.

I think it’s maddening for him. He basically did anything and everything to get as many gamepass subscriptions as possible, including upping production of a lesser console at a time he was set to release his 2 flagship titles instead of his premium console. Coupled with a historical pandemic that kept people at home spending money on all forms of entertainment and was still barely able to break 20 million subs despite significant discounts that have been available for years now. Meanwhile, Sony and Nintendo are releasing remakes and remastered games that people have no problem paying full price for. And is there still not one solid release date for any title purchased in the zenimax deal?
Xbox posted record numbers last quarter. You need to cope harder.

It doesn’t make your point valid. You think building those data centers is cheap or something for MS ass well? They do not have infinite money or something.
The data centers are already there (and printing money, btw). They only have to pay for maintenance, while someone who rents the data centers has to pay a fee to use them. The fee is always more expensive than the maintenance cost (pure business logic).
If Sony want to beat GP, they can. The point is, they can use whatever service they want for that. You don’t have to own the datacenter yourself. The hardware you place inside these racks are yours.
That's questionable. With them having to rent data centers from 3rd parties, it might not be cost efficient enough to do something like xCloud on a large scale.

xbox existent started this year? Their launch was laughable, while they were the ones screaming from ghe roofs that they had the best launch line up, the best multiplatform titles and the best hardware from the start. Well it didn’t aged well for them, and releasing 2 games at the end of the year is not something i findto clap for. One game is half assed and looks like a generic shooter (environment and geaphics), the other one is a race game we know by know…nothing new. And yea Sony does the same thing, but at the same time, they are puching a lot more new IP’s.

Deathloop, ghost wire and starfield are not started under MS supervision.

Sony had entire studios woking on their project. MS on other hand didnt have that much studios, and didnt invest on them in xbox one launch era. So this start gen isnt phill's fault.

We are seeing new projects coming from their studios, which will be released next year and after that.

Their launch up is strong. Its just the launch time isnt good.

Buying Bethesda was about as aggressive as you can get. But that stuff about Sony moneyhatting the entire Bethesda catalog isn't factual as far as anyone knows. That's just a rumor based off one guy on twitter.

Either way, that isn't the point. The point is if Jim Ryan said in an interview he wasn't interested in paying to keep games off other platforms then he would be lying. Phil Spencer has a habit of talking a big talk, but his actions and words don't always jive.

Such console warrioring. Valid points being pointed to as unvalid. Such concern for Microsoft's budgetary abilities in terms of data center management.

Tell us more of how Sony can not own data center services, yet own physical data center hardware and beat up the pesky bad guy competition.

So the guy in charge of xbox studios and its first party was not responsible for the brand having so few and closing studios ?

who keeps saying Amazon and Google are the biggest competitors to Microsoft and not Nintendo and Sony?

Datacenter infrastructure isn’t free, even if you already own it.

It's the next best thing to free though. Certainly much more cost effective than not owning it and having to rent it.

Pure facts. MS did it all by themselves screaming from the roofs before, and at launch.

And the point is still valid, otherwise…other companies would be in trouble if they needed to build their own data centers. It cost MS money, the need customers, Azure is not MS or Xbox only.

How quickly people forget...

Dude was literally in charge of Xbox's output during the era they were most derided for having both lack of quality and quantity.
Some of them haven't forgotten but they will just do mental gymnastic to explain why Xbox studios general manager wasn't managing the studios...
What can you do against the cult of personality be it Spencer or Cerny or Fils aimee to some people they can do no wrong and are wonderful people.Always defending them, like "he is a genius" or " he said *insert something bad* but he didn't mean it".
Even the best people can be shitty just like shitty people can genuinely be good sometimes.

You are apointed as a head of a company. The last head company left you with 5 shitty studios, which were run to the ground, and no back up studios. How are you gonna fix that turd?

The guy did all he can. He gave them alot of studios now to push more games. Its a miracle he fixed the turd that was xbox at that time.

So Halo on PS5 when?

From 2019:
According to Moriarty, Microsoft was once looking at bringing the collection of Master Chief games to PS4 a few years ago. Whether Microsoft is still interested in this, is unclear, but you'd assume they'd still be willing to play ball.

Could you imagine if it had happened? Gaming forums would just be popcorn city for months ...

What other companies? Aside from PSNow, which is at a small scale, there are zero other companies doing this. Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Nvidia all have their own data center infrastructure.

There's one exception with Shadow, but it costs a whopping 30 dollars a month.

They released Gears Tactics, Flight Simulator, Psychonauts 2, Forza Horizon 5, Deathloop and Halo Infinite.

All are 80+ games on Metacritic, that's pretty good output, enough for publisher of the year.

that got them the biggest gaming franchise, which started on their systems. Marrowind got kickstarted on xbox. Doom on their windows PC.

I dont see how people think this is a gatcha moment. Bethesda were always a MS partner.

This guy bought an entire publisher.
To have a constant stream of games for GamePass.

The exclusivity was just an "afterthought" when they first made the acquisition.

And yes, he's lying about GamePass engagement: they DO envision every xbox live gold user becoming a GamePass user and even every Xbox user if they could.

But well... he said what every other gaming division chief has been saying for years: PR bullshit. A bit of truth, a bit of lies, a bit of misinformation...

I have a few friends over at Zenimax and after several big market projects like Fallout 76 Bethesda was on the verge of bankruptcy. MS let them keep their name and gave them an unlimited bank account, saved Bethesda in the long run and kept thousands of jobs.

How is he lying, when he put their system on pc.

You dont even need to buy xbox, to play day1 xbox games, unlike playstation.

Only kids sees this as console warring.

The guy actively worked to make xbox games available to everyone. Cloud, cheap console, browser, phones, pc.

I guess we can add the pc release of GoW to Sony’s 2022 everyone.

It was a miracle. Xbox was on the verge of closing.
He went to MS, and conviced to invest in a console, which was declining. He managed to gain the support of MS. That itself is a miracle.

Come on man. You can't actually believe that.
Phil and every other xbox employee contacted by the press after Bethesda acquisition had stated the same: we'll think of exclusivity on a title to title basis. They probably ran their numbers later and projected GamePass success to then say plainly and out loud "Bethesda titles from now on will be exclusive".

Remember: GamePass is their first and foremost priority, backed and ordered by Satya Nadella himself ('cause under his command Microsoft turned to a SaaS company). Anything after subscriptions (GamePass, Office 365, Azure, Windows, etc) is just a "nice added bonus" for them.

Right. So now we can add GoW pc to Sonys 2022. I guess 2022 is over already and we can move onto 2033…

You can add what you like, I'm sure PC owners are happy to be getting the game. Doesn't change what has been released by MS since the launch of the Series consoles in any way.

No, Sony already got a prettified game from 2009 in 2021 and a prettfied game from 2011 (which is a prettified game from 2005) in 2018 :messenger_winking_tongue:

PC with Windows 10 (or 11) = Xbox

Xbox is an ecosystem and every Win10-11 PC user, as well as every Xbox console user, and every Xbox app user on their phones/tablets are ultimately Xbox users, so yes, they do envision a future where every Xbox user is a GamePass user...

... which is not bad IMHO. I mean, I've only spent US$40 in games on the entirety of 2021 (up to this day) which was Hitman 3, and I've been playing games like a madman because of GamePass. It's just that good of a service.

This is their business plan. Every studio they buy is on that plan. And people here think this service wont make profit. or even sustainable.

These dumbasses never invested in their studios, or buy any new studios to expand their IPs.

All companies that use cloud services from others in GENERAL. You guys really want to push this narrative that it is only possible when you have your own data centers. Yet the video streaming services saying something else, and no...those are not different at all. The content is different and PSNow already shows that it's not exclusive for companies who own those data centers.

They released Gears Tactics, Flight Simulator, Psychonauts 2, Forza Horizon 5, Deathloop and Halo Infinite.

Well good for them, didn't know Deathloop had any stealth release on the Xbox? So far it's only Forza 5 and a MP component for a fps shooter. Gears tactics this year? Is that not some mobile game? Also it was a 2020 title and so far nobody cares about it.

Deathloop will come to Xbox next year, we can count it again. Flight Simulator, Psychonauts 2, Gears Tactics ( not a mobile game, idiot) FH5 and Halo Infinite, pretty impressive scores for all of them since the console launch.

according to you, the current playstation games this year is useless, because they released useless time loop games, and short game, nobody cares.

These games have audiences. Just because playstation people doesnt care about those games, doesnt mean others dont care.

Tactic genre is big, its why eastern rpg are popular. Fps games are big. I dont know what you smoking there.

Both consoles have shitty starter. This starter gen games is meh.

Sony hasnt released any of the big boys. Xbox has halo and forza as big boys. The real big boys is next year, and after that. (God of war, and starfield).

Well we know what would have happened otherwise:
So, you're saying Microsoft bought Bethesda, not to keep those games off of PlayStation, only to ensure they still come to Xbox as well?

Kind of odd that they stopped development of the PlayStation version of those games...

Let's be honest. Microsoft spent billions to buy these publishers for the main reason of keeping the games off of PlayStation, thus making Xbox more attractive.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, but don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining.

Then start count when it will have a official launch date. for 2/3 years...it's a fucking weak list imo with one game still half assed.

I know you like to make yourself feel better to say that. But in the end, MS fucked it up at launch, and Sony was ready from the start without the need to talk bullshit in the media.

they could have cancelled deathloop, and the other game.
Could they? Sony had already paid Bethesda for those agreements and it would have been messy.

Even if they could, that would have been a terrible look, and PR is important to them - hence, interviews like this.
