Famitsu Sales: 11/29/21 – 12/5/21

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
It's a monopoly.

But it's a natural one. Not acquired or maintained with shady practices. It's just that everybody else gave up. How sad.

Hell, Square is already doing this.Even if much later, they ported Octopath to Xbox(or just gamepass?) rather than PS4 or 5.And thats especially true for smaller devs.
But its more than that. Having lost Japamn, Sony probably will need to pay more for timed exclusives like FF or MH because companies like Square and Capcom will want their potential loses on Japan to be recouped, since those loses would steem directly from being tied to a console with zero presence in Japan.
How on earth are you going to use Octopath coming to xbox as a sign that PS4/PS5 is doomed due to low sales in japan? Do I need to show you those xbox numbers? They're nonexistent. That only works against your point.

calm down there.

They mean the fact the game was ported on xbox shows some signs devs are acknowledging Xbox more. Plus games like that benefit more from gamepass, since massive audience means more future customers.

Xbox wont ever beat ps4/ps5 on japan.

Nobody ever said xbox will ever beat PS4/PS5 in japan but this guy is trying to make the claim that install base in Japan will sway developers away with an example of a 2018 Switch exclusive ported to Xbox in 2021. They didn't decide to port to xbox in 2021 due to install base in Japan. It's simply contracts for an old now cheap game. Using that example is contradictory to what he is claiming otherwise it would never have got an xbox release.
Did you read the rest of the post? Thats just one example.
Where are the rest of the examples? You mean like FF7 remake, or maybe you mean Forespoken? I'd like to hear what you think is being influenced by hardware sales in Japan.

These devs have 20m users on gamepass to see their games. Not only that, they get money to put their games there. So they will have more incentive to favor Xbox.

The only think that Ocopath on Gamepass proves is that Microsoft was willing to pay for it.

There's not many decisions which are being influenced purely by hardware sales in Japan, but they are a factor in decisions from Japanese publishers (not from Western publishers obviously).

What about gamepass? What has this got to do with Japan? You think gamepass is huge in Japan or something? If you count 20M global gamepass users why do we ignore the 160M PS4/PS5 users and try to state that low sales in Japan means these Japanese games won't come to PS but instead to a console that's nonexistent there. It doesn’t make sense what you're saying.

One has to buy the game, The other one the publisher pays you to put the game there.

If I am a dev, my game would be the one that pays me guarantee money.

Looks like the Switch is killin' it. Are they still making non-OLED switches or are they just selling what was already made?

Ok and if they buy the game Square get more money but back to the original point:

how is this different to say Sony having to pay the publisher to make the game for their platform or even release on PS+ or PS Now? It's not and none of it is influenced by sales in Japan. You can't be using an example of MS or Sony paying to release a game as Japan hardware sales influencing publisher behaviour especially when you use the nonexistent xbox in Japan as an example.

You need players to buy your games. This isnt a guaranteed money. The gamepass one is guarenteed.

Devs would be happy to be paid $20m upfront for their games, instead of actually waiting for them to sell to reach that much money.

And add gamepass money.

Your point there needs people to actually buy their games. So if sony paid for timed exclusive, it needs to sell.

If MS pays them, They will get players ready to play their games. That is something you are missing. Actual customers, who will be exposed to their games, and will buy them in the future. These people may not buy the game, but they will try to buy it, if they play it.

Mate, none of what you are saying has anything and I mean literally nothing to do with hardware sales in Japan. Stop with the red herring. FF7 remake got a PS+ release, Square-Enix I'm sure made bank from it and some of the ~40M PS+ subscribers played it. Now what has this got to do with Japan hardware sales? Literally nothing. So what exactly are you arguing about here? That games will come to PS4/PS5 and Xbox regardless of sales in Japan because Sony and MS will pay for them regardless?

Maybe you're confused as to what thread this is and what was being discussed . I'll quote the segment where this started

"nonexistant if the PS5 keeps selling like this. Hell, Square is already doing this.Even if much later, they ported Octopath to Xbox"

And then the example given was a 2021 xbox port of a 2018 Switch game.

This is a Japan sales thread and what was being discussed is how the hardware sales in Japan will influence Japanese publishers to not release on PS4/PS5. This was not a "have you heard about our lord and saviour gamepass" thread.

And you wont see a versatile and flexible console rivaling the Switch because Sony doesn't have the know-how to do it and knows they cant beat Nintendo when it comes to... anything, really. Not me saying, just having a quick glance at the numbers(Both software, genre of games and hardware) and anyone would reach this decision.

Sony IS doing their best ever, and even then Nintendo is handlingly beating him in most territories, starting in Japan, which they admitelly just did an Xbox week in terms of numbers.Because lets face it, Sony sold only 1800 units during the holidays not because they couldnt ship another 8200 units, but rather because they couldnt bother, given the gigantic hole they are in already in Japan.
Nice deflection but the reality is Nintendo used to run the tradional console space. Sony muscled them out and they've stayed out of their way since the Wii U mega flop.

Nintendo created the standard for what a tradicional console space is, and Nintendo is recreating yet again that defenition with the Switch.

And that's the whole point: Nintendo is adapting to the ever evolving nature of the industry, while Sony has been doing, hardware-wise, the same thing since... the PS1. Thats why, alongside not having first party games that appeal to the japanese audience, they have evaporated from japan. Or I guess exterminated is the correct word here. Nintendo moved on to the future, innovating both software and hardware, while Sony will die proudly in that glorious TRADICIONAL SUPER POWERFUL CONSOLE.

Moving the goalpost won't change the story, the fact, that numbers tell.

PS: Funny thing is, the power gap between mobile processors and "stationary" ones are rapidly shrinking. It will come to a point, probably with Nintendo's 10th gen console, that that difference will be nonexistant and not only Nintendo will have a hybrid console, but also the most powerful one(or close to it). And when that happens, all that will be left to clamor about the virtues of a PS console will be that they are more immovable than any other console in the industry.

"traditional console space", sure sure.

The matter of fact is, Playstation utterly dominated Japan with PS1 and PS2, but then Japan realized that they liked portable gaming more, and ever since Sony gave up on portables, Nintendo is dominating to the point where competitors barely even exist.

Ironically when this eventually happens in like 4 gens it will mean sony can just as easily launch a hybrid too if they so please.

The reality is Sony can still pull off a powerful home console while Nintendo can't. It needs to be weaker so it can be portable.

Luckily for Nintendo they were able to hold their own in the portable console space otherwise they'd be a 3rd party dev by now.

It must suck for Nintendo fans who liked consoles such as the game cube and n64. If you want modern day gaming pushing tech limits you need a pc, xbox or ps5. Nintendo is gone and you can thank Sony for that.

As a PlayStation gamer I'm so glad Sony didn't get relegated to the portable market. It would suck so bad.

Japan never "realized they liked portable gaming more", they just bought the platforms that had the software they wanted.

Not at all!The Switch can run most things, as The Witcher 3 and Doom 4 and 5 proves it, and probably by the 10th gen(so Nintendo next gen console), they will probably be able to run everything. Which should take 2 years or so to happen.

I mean, people that game on the Switch can have the best of both worlds. They didn't have to be relegated just to the home or portable market. They have both, and never really had to limit themselves to only one style.

And you know what the funny thing is?You talk all that talk about Nintendo going third party, but that never happened and given the Switch success, it wont for awhile at least. But Sony is starting to release their first party games on PC, effectivelly making them third party before Nintendo(if it ever happens).

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh man, the irony is just too good.

Either way, fact is a fact Kerotan.Sony was kicked out of Japan, Nintendo just posted their best results ever in Europe, and Sony barely keeps up with Nintendo in the US.

We shall see next week if Sony will still need the stock that usually goes to Japan to be sent elsewhere to battle their evil nemesis, Microsoft.

You're delusional if you honestly think current Japanese stock represents demand for the PS5. It is in higher demand then the ps4 in every region at this stage of last gen. Not sure why you are so salty over this fact. Do you still hold a grudge over sony running Nintendo out of the powerful home console space? It certainly seems like it to me. Just be happy Nintendo can still find success and didn't end up like Sega.

And yeah switch gets old ports of 3rd party games and guess what they don't run great compared to the console versions. Next gen will be no different, the Nintendo platform is always an after thought for AAA third party developers.

Heh, we will see. As always, no point discussing with someone as blind as you, whose "dedication" to sony already costed at least 2 permabans to two different forums(VGC and Resetera).

I'll let the numbers speak for themselves, and I'll make the necessary remarks as the weeks go by.

Wow a whole 3, count them 3 playstation games in the top 30 more surprising is just how fast demon slayer slid down the charts as japan was going fucking bonkers for anything slayer related you'd have thought it would be a slam dunk. They should have released it on switch would have sold triple the amount, sony is going to have to do something drastic to turn the tides over there. No amount of copium from people on here is able to wish away how hard they are getting hammered in japan at the moment.

Were the Sony portables popular in Japan? Because if so, they're sure missing a trick here.
Yes, since some decades ago Japan is a market that prefers portables and specially mobile more than the west, were mobile already represents over half of the market.

But excluding Japan and a Sonyland country like Spain, Vita couldn't fight against mobile a Nintendo's portables. So they decided to focus instead on their home consoles and prepare a future where (once the related technology becomes good enough) they will address portable gaming via PS Now, Remote Play and some native games for mobile and PC (which will be playable on Steam Deck-like portable PCs). They patented a Dual Shock shaped joycon like attachment for smartphones and tablets.

So all this will partly do the job, but in any case Japan's share of worldwide revenue in (home) console market became smaller, so now most Japanese companies (being Sony one of them) who made Japan focused games are switching to a global market focused games and investing more in mobile.

As of now Switch has the monopoly of portable consoles and seems it doesn't make sense to fight with them.

Agree with most of this, but the only caveat I'd give is that Japan is more interested in hybrid gaming than portable gaming. just like everywhere else.

Much netter legs than I thought 2-3 weeks ago. Could become a mini-evergreen for PS4

There were many more active platforms in the PS2 era so it wouldn't really be possible. For example, at the start of December in 2002 the top 30 contained:

PS2:12
GBA: 10
GameCube: 5
Xbox: 1

(I know that doesn't add up to 30, but for some reason the data I have is missing two places)

It's a shame there are literally no ps4/5 in Japan so it's impossible for fans of the series to buy this game.

With their software situation in Japan Sony needs to take advantage of every hit they get. Hopefully they can get more stock in place for GT7.

You mean like Sony is now, putting their games on PC ;) ?
No I meant full 3rd party where they wouldn't even have a platform. So no not like some games to pc or in Nintendos case already, some games to mobile.

Obviously none of that happened and both Sony and Nintendo are thriving. Doing the best they've ever done as a business. And a big part of that is they are not competing. Nintendo are in their lane and sony are in theirs. They muscled Nintendo out of the powerful home console market but Nintendo muscled them out of the portable market.

Hopefully but I doubt it. WW demand for ps5 won't be met next year and sony are focusing on the markets where their main competitor (xbox) has traction.

While that reasoning does make sense, I don't think its unreasonable for Sony to be giving Japan at least 50,000 consoles a month.

I personally agree but sadly xbox is giving playstation no competition in Japan or Asia as a whole so Sony are not too worried. The main European markets and America seem to be getting most of the stock.

Pretty much. Wii U flop made Nintendo go portable with a HDMI option, Vita flop made Sony focus mainly on dedicated home console.

And they are both better off for it. No longer butting heads.

It's a truce after sony stated a war on Nintendo with the ps1 and later the psp. They didn't get all the pie but they ended up with quiet a chunk.

Sony are lucky they tried this as playstation is now the most important part of the company.

For me it is about size of impact. Sending 50,000 consoles to Japan could have a nice effect on the market, whereas I think the US market wouldn't be that affected if it got 50,000 fewer PS5s.
