Yes it is, just like the US and the rest of the world. A big mobile market is not a Japan specific phenomenon.
True, it is a worldwide thing. Mobile has a bigger growth, more users and generate more revenue than console and PC around the world, but specially in Asia where the difference is bigger. And the main markets there are obviously China, Japan, India and Korea, but Korea, India and China always have been tiny markets for consoles.

Yes I'd agree with that. I think there's a lot of potential growth for dedicated gaming devices in places like China and Korea. I know that Media Create is now collecting some data on South Korea and Taiwan, and I hope we start getting more data for other Asia countries too.

After reading some genuine crackpots on this thread, I hope the Switch and the Xbox Series S run away with the next two years of sales, while delusional alternate timeline dreamers can scream about how in demand their system of choice is.

Xbox Series S running away with sales would count as an alternate timeline I think.

The longer there's chip shortages, the more people will settle on the Series S; it's cheaper, has the vaunted SSD, and it supports UE5. Why, it almost seems like a good old-fashioned console.

Plus Game Pass.

These threads are hillarious because of just that, it's like watching a console version of the 5 stages of grief. seems some people are eternally stuck in stage 1: denial. Trapped in a fantasy world in their heads where nintendo is forever in last place as a hybrid doesn't count as a real console. Back on earth people are buying & enjoying an abundance of 1st & 3rd party switch games which the charts reflect.

BUT PS5 DEMAND IS OUT TO MARS!!! DO YOU KNOW HOW BADLY IT WOULD BE BEATING OXYGEN IF SUPPLY WAS THERE?!?@?
Obviously you dont get it. Sony is sending just enough supply to beat their one true nemesis: Microsoft. Didn't you see that the PS5 sold more than the xbox? Thats the only indicator you will ever need.PS5 is clearly very healthy in Japan.

The rest is being sent to fight in the trenches back in the Americas and Europe. What?Nintendo is stealing our marketshare in Japan and on the rest of the world and devs are jumping ship to Nintendo? Please, you know that little company doesn't make games. They make hanafuda cards.

Hmph, fool.

PS5 is clearly not healthy in Japan but the reason isn't lack of demand. The reason is supply which is going to battle ground markets where xbox is competitive. If you can't understand that there is no hope for you.

I don't think you lack intelligence so I'm guessing you hold a grudge against playstation and wish it had no demand in Japan. Why else would you push this false narrative?

False narrative? Please Kerotan, you are better than this.

Everything I have said was backed up by data, and you, on some wild fantasy to explain why Sony gave up on Japan. But I dont need to present more numbers and facts, because time will do that for me

Nice deflection but the reality is Nintendo used to run the tradional console space. Sony muscled them out and they've stayed out of their way since the Wii U mega flop.
Not the first time I’ve seen you post this bizarre rubbish.

Nintendo has sold 22 and a half million consoles since the Switch launched in Japan 4 and a half years ago.

Sony has sold 9 million consoles (PS4&5 combined) since the PS4 launched 7 and a half years ago.

Even if I wanted to be really generous and throw in the Vita, which had shocking software sales and launched in 2011 (6 whole years prior to the Switch), that would still add less than 6 million additional units to Sony’s tally.

Not to mention that Nintendo is selling software at an unprecedented and unmatched level in Japan.

But you’re using hyperbole like ‘muscled them out’ to big up Sony and ‘flop’ to describe Nintendo.

Open your bloody eyes and stop seeing Sony as part of your identity. If Sony has bullied Nintendo in the home console space then Nintendo have absolutely gang raped Sony in every other metric (including any and all that actually matter).

I think what a lot of people aren't seeing is that Sony is wise to "give up" or "abandon" Japan. The reality is, there's not much they can reasonably do to turn their fortunes around there and it's a waste of time and money for Sony. I imagine Sony has already done the research and has already come to that conclusion themselves.

Sony isn't the giant they used to be. They bled oodles of money for years with the PS3 and were doing terribly financially. While they're in a better position now, they still have to play things more conservatively than they used to. As a result, they can't afford to take as many risks. and are playing it safe. Why waste the time and resources into taking risks like making another handheld and making more games focused on one market when they can make games that have a global appeal besides Japan?

Maybe in another 10 years or so, it would be worth it for Sony to take another crack at Japan by making a hybrid of their own or making more games that appeal to Japan, but I'm not even sure of that. Going forward, I think we can continue to expect that PlayStation consoles will sell along the lines of the PS3 and PS4. In other words, they'll be a small success and not much more than that.

People don’t understand that even big publishers are kind of “leaving” japan for the most part. Almost every major japanese game has sold more in the west this year than in japan itself. Even games like Yakuza and Tales of… did bigger numbers across seas.

Thats why Capcom and Sega keep talking about global expansion and releasing on pc. Square enix is also shifting their game design to appeal more to westerners, all the biggest companies there are feeling the pressure to move out of japan. Square enix did mo-cap with english voice acting for FF16 before japanese, Forspoken, FF16, and even the next Dragon Quest are becoming more western influenced. It’s what they have to do to survive.

Japan is not gonna be a viable place of concentration for game devs for anything outside of mobile gaming by the end of this generation. It’s not wonder sony themselves are shifting a lot of focus to other asian territories like China and Korea. They will focus on making up for lost sales in japan by expanding to new regions. Thats what all japanese publishers will do not named nintendo.

of course Western revenue is higher

US + Canada population = 370M
Western population = 400M

but per capita wise, Japan gaming revenue >>>>> any single country including the US

Everything you've said. What data is there to suggest that current ps5 Japanese sales even remotely represent demand for it in Japan. Humour me please.

Sony haven't given up on Japan, they just have priorities. While I sucks for the region its a smart business choice.

you might find this shocking but those of us that like data also care about the US, UK, Spain, Taiwan, Germany, , hell if East Timor started releasing game sales data we'd care about that too, Japan just gives high-quality data every week and unfortunately no-one else does
But why?

Is FF7 remake still on PS5 and not Switch? Is Forspoken still on PS5 and not Switch? Persona? Yakuza like a Dragon? Elden Ring?

This is why Sony doesn't really care right now.

How has FF7R sold on PS5 (20,889 - very poor numbers)? How has Persona sold on PS5? How has Forspoken sold on PS5? How has Yakuza Like a Dragon sold on PS5 (this on I know - very, very poorly. Debuted at 2,861 units...). How has Elden Ring sold on PS5?

I think Sony cares.

I know you're talking about japanese sales but Sony doesn't really care at this point as long as these games sell well enough worldwide (which they do)

Some of you focus too much on a handful of third parties but don't see what the vast majority of the market is doing.
The majority of the market isn't creating or able to create AAA games that compete with Activision, EA, Ubisoft, or Take-Two. The majority of the market has mostly entirely focused on the Switch and are reaping the benefits, whether it's Capcom with Rise becoming the fastest-selling console exclusive World Wide, Konami having the best selling game of all time in Japan in Momotaro, Marvelous having two million-selling games in under a year, Koei Tecmo having the best selling musou of all time with Age of Calamity - all these results have come from not trying to compete with the AAA space where 100 million budget isn't even enough nowadays and creates huge risks that don't always pay off, as we've recently seen with both Marvel Avengers and GotG underperforming.

This will be the best year for third parties on the Switch in Japan and all signs are pointing towards 2022 being even better for them, meanwhile, not a single third-party game on the PS5 has even surpassed 100K physical in Japan. Discounting Japan the 2nd biggest video game market which also has a huge influence on East Asia is a risk only companies of the size of Kadokawa, Square & Bandai can truly make. Sega has already let go of Nagoshi and we will see the impacts to their new strategy in the near future but you should be expecting them to focus more on the strategy that's working for the likes of Konami, Marvelous & Koei Tecmo - especially for their Japanese Development Teams(obviously they have a very successful PC focused Studio in Europe which isn't going to focus on the Switch).

The impacts of Switch's domination will really be fully seen in 2023 and 2024.. with the level of sales software of the PS5 is achieving right now and knowing that the majority of Japanese third parties are notoriously slow to transition - I expect the PS4 to continue to get support next year but in 2023 that support will fade and there would only be one choice if you want to be successful on the Japanese market when planning your future games.

Source on that? Sounds like it's just wishful thinking from the folks saying Sony doesn't care.

Of course they care.

At this point it's pretty obvious that Japan isn't a priority for them.

Sony will want to sell as much as they can in every country. So they won't be happy with their sales in Japan, but they won't be overly concerned either since the platform will be successful elsewhere (eventually when the chip shortage is solved).

Yeah, of course Sony wants to sell as much as possible but they're not too concerned about FF7R (PS5) only selling 20k in Japan, when the majority of sales came from elsewhere.

Japan is the 3rd biggest market in the world 4th if you count EU as a single market. It absolutely matters. Its also the homeland of 2 of thw 3 hardware makers. What more do you want?

Yes I'd agree with that. I think there's a lot of potential growth for dedicated gaming devices in places like China and Korea. I know that Media Create is now collecting some data on South Korea and Taiwan, and I hope we start getting more data for other Asia countries too.
China and Korea are very focused on PC and specially mobile, it's complicated to make consoles work there for several reasons, and this is one of the main reasons of why Sony wants to approach PC and mobile to grow in Asia. I also think Steam Deck and similar PC base handhelds have a lot of potential in China and Korea.

China, USA and Japan combined make 105B of the ~180B of the current worldwide total gaming revenue (mobile+console+PC), Taiwan is a tiny market. Consider it isn't a top 10 country, and that the 10th generates less than a 2% of the global market.

Definitely useful data. Would be really good if one day we got the top 1000 console games sold each year in places like South Korea and Taiwan, just like we get from Japan.

I think we'll end getting it from GSD, or at least the publishers subscribed to it. Basically GSD is most publishers teaming up (the big exceptions are Epic and Nintendo): each publisher or dev who is subscribed in addition to pay a fee to get the reports, provides their real digital and physical consoles + Steam (I think it didn't cover Epic Store + eShop) sales data for the supported countries (as of now basically EU and a few more, but NA, China Korea and Japan are missing):

And in exchange they get the info for these markets of all the other publishers. Most big publishers are in, with I think only Nintendo and a few more important ones mising, but they were working on it, in the same way they were working on getting info from more countries. As I remember they provide top 1000 ranking for each country and platform (counting as platform let's say PSN or Xbox physical).

As usual in this kind of things, fees are pretty expensive, but for indies/devs who just started of have a very low revenue their fee is very low for the first (and second as I remember) year.

That's very good point. If GSD begins expanding into Asia, then the competition may push Media Create to share more data too.
