You won't be saying that in 10 years time when every multiplayer shooter comes with an Elite tier weapons NFT that only the 1% can afford. They fuck you up the arse in real life and now they get to do it in virtual space.
the mental gymnastics in this thread.. ''oh if doesn't affect me wiping my ass, doesn't bother me''
then few years down the road are bitching why every game is full of these predatory deals

NFTs will have their place in the coming metaverse and will have other utilities we can't foresee yet.

Here's my problem with their use in the AAA gaming space: You don't truly own the assets tied to the NFT. Without full decentralization, it really is just an auction house being run by the game publishers. The 3D models are stored on their servers, so you are at their mercy.

And I'd love to know how NFTs are currently 100% renewable, because they aren't, and until they are, it's not going to be a non-issue for everyone. You don't have to be a Greta to appreciate how burning through stacks of energy for the sake of enabling digital trading cards that make rich people richer is not inherently something to be celebrated.

If NFTs are minted over the Algorand blockchain, it's actually carbon neutral. Any game publisher would be free to use this.

Since most of it is still being done over Ethereum, it will continue to be an issue until they switch to proof of stake.

Yeah but why is that desirable?. Is it a situation where the 'owner' has like copyright on that knife, and only they can use it or something?.
I mean its cool i suppose, if you care about stuff like that.:pie_confused:
Wonderful. Now everyone will be a copyright troll.

However, if this leads to the US copyright laws finally being reformed then it might be a good thing.

Any game right now could charge crazy amounts for weapons.. w/o blockchain or NFTs.

You guys aren't really making any sense.

NTFs slowly turning regular videogames into real life casinos and auction houses. It will reach a point where some devs dont care anymore if the game is fun to play or not, but how many NTF transaction can be made in the game.

This is great news as it allows the developers to pursue an avenue of revenue that does not conflict with gameplay.

But of course, weak-minded reactionary gamers who know little to nothing will automatically get angry.

Personally, I'm wondering if this will affect the GamePass release as Phil Spencer hasn't had favorable comments in the past:

Blockchains and NFTs are an attempt at justifying those crazy prices though

The only major company so far to announce anything is Ubisoft, and they are doing these as rewards for gameplay.. basically just your typical cosmetics with an NFT element.. and all they really care to make money on, is likely by making deals with the 3rd party marketplaces so they get a cut of the sales, which are sales that make the players money.

I don't see any evidence games are going to start actually selling high priced NFTs to access better weapons or anything like that.

This auction for "becoming an NPC" is maybe slightly suss, but all of these things are getting absolutely shat on via Twitter. I wouldn't be shocked if Ubisoft Quartz dies a terrible death before the end of 2022 lol

I wouldn't worry about it. Sure that many games might use that in the future, but I'm sure that there's gonna be plenty of normal games being sold for the more sane consumers.

Bitcoin has been a fad for over ten years now. I think you're gonna have to be extremely patient 🤭
I mean moreso NFTs and blockchain shit as it applies to games. It's just another excess revenue stream for studios to milk gullible people with more money than brains, and it's something that doesn't need to exist in this industry. It's bad enough with microtransactions being as prolific as they are.

To add: I do think that the idea of NFTs (gaming or otherwise) are just absurdly dumb to begin with in their own right, not to mention their impact on the environment.

The market will decide whether NFTs in games need to exist. Imagine you want to play an MMO and got to choose between two games. MMO #1 is a classic one, while MMO #2 uses NFTs. They're very similar in quality otherwise. The average gamer will play MMO #2 because why grind an epic mount in MMO #1 when you can do the same in MMO #2 and get a mount that actually has some monetary value? This dynamic will indirectly force devs to implement NFTs into their games. That's my long term prediction.

The same could be said of loot boxes, look where that went.

Not sure what your point is. Haven't many games eliminated them?

They still exist, but they aren't as prevalent as they once were. MTX are, but in most games, it's for cosmetics.. or "boosters".. and they.. again, can be done w/o NFTs at any price.

NFTs make things transferable outside the game.. so sure, maybe some game might think they can get away with charging a high price.. but good luck making a game popular that actually does that for anything but cosmetics.

Imagine coming home from work, and sitting down to relax and play a game, and instead of just playing and having fun you can choose to pretend to have fun because all that's on your mind is the question of "how much money does this make me".

I don't want the gibbering spirit of capitalism watching me play games over my shoulder. I know some people would be happy to, but I'd hope most people would not. I don't want my fun tainted by market economics.

The point is we have the ability right now to kill a horrible trend in video games.

Imagine it's 2007 and you can stop devs from releasing broken and/or incomplete games because they could just patch it later.

tbh not sure why these companies are banking on their games lasting long enough for people to bother investing into NFT's on their platform. The game will prolly hold interest for a few months if it's decent.

Fidget Spinners weren't sold because the fidget spinner company thought they would be fun for months. They were sold because they like taking money from people.

In this case the NFT loses it's value once some "closing date" occurs and whoever owns it then gets to be the NFC.

The only other major game doing it at this point is Rainbow Six Siege.. and the expectation is that the cosmetic items would probably exist for a long time since the game is a live service, and even if a sequel comes out, they'd transfer.

That kind of internet has been long, long dead. Acting like it's still there doesn't really serve anyone.

Eh. I'd argue most people know what they're getting into.

This is FUD from the Greta Thunberg types. Especially since the energy needed to run NFTs could be made from renewables. It's a complete non-issue.
Yeah it could be but cryptocurrency douchebags don't give a shit about anyone or anything but their bank account.
They would run their miners on the blood and tears of innocent children if they could.

Unwishlisted and reported to Steam.

You thought DLC and broken games were bad, just wait for this trash.

As I have said, IF people would understand this dev and history you would understand not to believe ANYTHING. The forum for the game is currently fire calling them out and the response:

"We are not creating the game on a blockchain, that's why that's not against the Steam rules"

Can't just make and release a game anymore. Need to tack on stupid BS for everything now. So annoying.

Other side of the coin...

Developers: Can't just keep the scope and graphics the same anymore. Need to tack on stupid BS like ray tracing. So annoying.

Reminder that these two games cost $60 dollars at release...

There's provenly a massive crowd that will go for such a thing.
I'm surprised it took this long, but I suppose NFT is the cool new trend(?) so it may sound more appealing than Citizen of the stars and all your dreams come true.

A token is non fungible by itself. So what the fuck is going on? Why tell the public that a non fungible thing is non fungible? Because it's fungible? Which cast of society enjoys this madafakin around with words n shit? Fuck, I'm goin back playing pokemon.

So, you buy the game, then you buy or "Create" some item within the game you can sell it for actual money. After 5 years nobody cares of the game and the items have no value even outside it.

Imagine if you were able to buy some NFT in Anthem or Lawbreakers...

There's a massive crowd that will go for NFTs of PNGs that can make them money by selling them to other NFT bros.

STALKER was already a niche as fuck game, this is a great way to kill off any interest a lot of those people have. Just look at the responses not just in this thread but on their Twitter page, it's overwhelmingly negative as it should be.

NFT will enable modders to sell unique skins and enforce the uniqueness. Basically, GSC Game World will issue an original contract to a creator for an unique item then that creator is free
to sell the said contract without GSC Game World meddling in. Then the new owner will also be able to sell the contract, and so forth. NFT in this case gives freedom and safety.

There's nothing worse than a block chain evangelist.

It's like if you take all the worse qualities of an Apple user, Tesla owner and Vegan, and combine them into one shitty person.

Blockchain is a legit technology that has multiple uses, NFT being one of them.

Freedom to do what, and safety from what? Freedom to sell the item in some way the parent company would object to because it puts them at potential legal risk? Safety from the parent company going under, nuking the value of the item anyway? How would the creator benefit from this, if it's all tied to the company and game he's doing it for anyway?

Blockchain, is a legit technology. NFTs, are a solution in search of a problem.

I’ve just heard about these NFT’s this week and I’m sure if it’s trending in the industry and companies are pursuing it, it’s probably not good for consumers and gamers. It’s probably considered to be the new “microtransactions”. I think Peter Molyneux’s next game will feature them as well, so look out.
