Famitsu has published its estimated physical game software and hardware sales data for Japan for the week of December 6, 2021 to December 12, 2021.
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl for Switch remained the highest selling titles for the fourth consecutive week since launch, moving another 130,772 retail units. Mario Party Superstars for Switch followed at an additional 53,824 units.
On the hardware side, the Switch family sold 192,335 units, the PlayStation 5 family sold 1,470 units, the Xbox Series family sold 805 units, and the PlayStation 4 family sold 103 units. Next-generation consoles continue to face stock issues.

Think the 1470 number is wrong in the article.

Great week. The PS5 has handidly beaten the MS Series.

Wish there was more stock to sell, but Sony wisely send the rest away to other territories where MS has a competitive edge and sent just enough stock to Japan to remain competitive in its home turf.

Looking forward to next week to see how well Sony manages to maintain its sales momentum!

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Stocks seems to be very limited for PS5, which is understandable.

in my country, people are queuing up for PS5 preorder since many months ago still has yet to get their hands on it, its crazy.

Sony is giving Japan just enough consoles to never be beaten by MS at this point.
I don't envy the people that need to distribute these consoles worldwide, holy shit.

I'm not a console warrior but it never fails to amuse me that Microsoft gets a spot on the Japan list with minecraft and there are never any sony games

Microsoft should just send one huge shipment to Japan so they can handily outsell the PS5 one week. It would be hilarious.

Hey thats totally unfair there was a whole 3, count them 3 ps games near the bottom of the top 30 last week lol. Was a smart grab getting minecraft least that game gives MS a bit of revenue in japan as the japanese absolutely love that game on all formats it's out on, it exploded in popularity over there.

Of course, because MS is their One True Competitor.

As long as Sony manages to beat MS, they certainly must be happy with their sales in Japan.
What is Sony's competitor in Japan? Switch? lmao. Not unless they start to include a portable device with the PS5.

Yeah...then they'd only have 1 million left to go.

Surely when cloud gaming comes to PS, Sony will be right back in the thick of things, right?

And no one expects the Series to outsell Sony in their homeland (lol), but the fact that it's been this close on a weekly basis many times is interesting, to say the least.

Nintendo is and always was Sony and MS main competitor. Its just in Japan this fact is abudendly clear, given that Nintendo is beating both Sony and MS combined 200:1.

Honestly, at this point you cant even say that Nintendo has any competitor left in Japan, because they muscled Sony out of Japan at this point.

Outside of Sony now basically non-existance in Japan, Nintendo did great. It seems that the Switch is down YOY(correct me if Im wrong) due to shortages, so the console will probably be down this year, but all things considered its doing well.

And on the software side, evergreens keep being evergreens.

Oh yeah: The PS5 has now fallen behind the PS4 in terms of sales, and the Wii U has a ~60% lead over the PS5.

Its not even shameful. The PS5 performamce on Japan has just been a total disgrace so far.

PS5 is behind Wii U launch aligned? Holy shit. That really puts things in perspective.

It's crazy that the PS5 can be doing so poorly in Japan but seeing success pretty much everywhere else. Somehow Nintendo has figured out how to appeal to the masses worldwide.

The only thing that's interesting is how little stock Japan has on PS5. If they don't send more units, PS5 doesn't sell more.
Clearly Sony knows that and it's simply not a priority for them.

It's so weird to me how by march there will be over 20M PS5 consoles out there and i have yet to see any other than mine, lmao.

Yeah, I don't feel like the shortages have ever been this bad in decades. Maybe the PS2? But even with how popular the Wii was and the Switch has been, I've come across them in stores when they were at their highest demand levels. Granted, I don't leave my house as much as I used to, but I can't imagine the PS5 or XSX or staying on store shelves long. In fact, they may never even see the shelves!

Yeah, and its a rather big difference.

It just boogles my mind that Sony simply gave up Japan like that. Sure, its more successful outside of it, but not only it is the second biggest market for games, but also a vital territory for many devs. So when your platform has ZERO presence on that territory, you start losing them for your competitors, which in this case is Nintendo.

At the best case scenario, they become multiplatform devs, like Falcom is becomming. At worst, they go full exclusive on Switch, which is what Nippon Ichi is doing. In either scenario, Sony is bleeding custumers(since there are less reasons to oen a PS5, since people can get their games on a cheaper and more appealing system, like the Switch) and they lose the goodwill of their partners, the devs, which makes it harder for them to convince them again of developing on their future generations.

I doubt that Sony couldnt at least send 10k every week to Japan, to alliviate to some degree the situation, but they dont. And the natural conclusion to take from that, considering that companies dont like to lose money, is that they cant compete with Nintendo in Japan. Simple as that.

This is what i called a total domination.

Big Brain Academy close to flat on week 2. It will have inmense legs Switch boost incoming.
Great legs for Pokemon SwSh a game many deem to be terrible
Also Animal crossing will become the best selling game ever in Japan is insane.

PlayStation became an American company producing western games to appeal to western audiences. I assume they've given up on Japan several years ago.

I dont know about the Yen strength relative to the Dollar now but companies pay attention to that kind of stuff as well when decision making.
If they see a very strong Dollar in the future they will try to maximize their Dollar intake by shifting resources to western projects since they are Companies that are valued in Yen and thus having their revenue in the stronger Dollars (or Euros) will boost their Yen earnings just by virtue of exchange rates.

USD has been declining in value all year. We're actually seeing record inflation right now.

A little off topic, but I wonder with this "inflation"... I wonder if we'll see the official MSRP of the consoles to go up a bit (scalping asides).

Crazy times.

Happened way before that... basically with PS4 they were already western centric.
PS4 was the fist console from Sony not designed exclusively in Japan.
Even the launch dates Japan was not priority... it become tier 3.

That 2021 chart shows the Yen depreciating relative to the Dollar. In the beggining of the year the exchange rate was 100 yen = 1 dollar now its 100 yen = 0.9 dollar you need less dollars to buy 100 yen.
The Dollar can apreciate against a foreign currency and lose value locally at the same time. They are 2 separate phenomena.

Looks like Switch is finally hitting saturation as numbers are down from last year. It is still selling incredibly well considering Japan's aging population. Something like 50% of the country is over the age of 60.
Microsoft should probably try to get more units in Japan, but with gamepass on PCs, and with gaming on PC becoming a far more popular platform than 4k consoles, thanks to the youtube/minecraft/apex legends/MMO generation of gamers in Japan, it maybe that MS knows what they are doing.
I know I am seeing more and more XBox gamepass cards for sale both online and in stores. Japan is traditionally cash based society and so people don't have credit cards, hence game download cards are immensely popular.

I don't think Sony has any idea of its identity at this point.

Only Nintendo making a home console only system could cause that to happen.

How is it hitting saturation if Nintendo Switch sold 192,335 units in Japan alone, in one week? This isn’t even the week of Christmas either, it’s probably about to explode again and sell another 100 to 250k units next week in Japan
If they can keep up the stock, but I'll be damned if it doesn't look like they were holding back the floodgates until now.

I agree, as long as they stick to the hybrid formula they can’t lose. Knowing nintendo though, who knows what quirky gimmick they will introduce to the next iteration

Just that they had more units on the shelves than they sold. I do think there is a ceiling for Switch and it can't be far off. They are at like 21 million in Japan. That is insane.
