Phil Spencer says he spends ‘zero energy’ on console wars - ‘doesn’t envision’ a time when every Xbox user subscribes to Game Pass

So what? That's what MS is also doing with a lot of titles.

Same goes for MS paying for these games i mentioned.

Only Phil loves to talk about these kinds of topics all the time, as if he wants to justify himself every time to the community or something. Just wants to talk up everything and try to come across as the "good guy".
It is small dick syndrome. Phil might drive a big f350 with dualies. :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Lol. No company reaches 7 billion active customers. That's insane. Microsoft Windows has around 1.5 billion active users. What makes you think Microsoft and/Sony are going to appeal to almost every human on the planet??
I am not talking about active users, I am talking about every human being on the planet being able to pick up there phone and playing a game. That's the reach they want.

Doesn't Phil Spencer follow Andrea Pichinini, the biggest catfish xbox fanboy ever on this planet? I don't see PlayStation executives following fanboys on twitter.
Really we going to cry about Twitter now?

It only means as much as you want it to mean.

Let them have tbier space, as I prefer they don't invade ours.

They did make it more expensive for Sony I think,

Those 3rd party deals may come less frequently now.

Release on 1 system for some money for a year, or release on them all and get MS Money?

Hard choice.

We all know what Moon Studios guy would do.

You're missing the point. Not everyone is into gaming, so they'll never use the service. Then they're are people like myself who enjoy gaming, but wouldn't be interested streaming a game to my phone. Then there is the fact that this service will cost money every month.

More people are into watching TV/films than gaming, but even then Netflix "only" has just north of 200 million subscribers. No where close to the planets 7 billion.

What makes you think Sony or Microsoft can beat those numbers?

They just want to give as much people as possible to have the option to give their company money. Exposure and the like. I never ever said they would have 7 billion active users, just that companies want the biggest audience exposure possible. That audience is on mobile for now.

Sonys market share is going to shrink this gen, just like it did in the PS3 days.

Right now the overall market seems to be capped at about 200 mil, somebody needs to break the glass ceiling, but I think they all have to do it together.

Nobody is doing it without help.

Yeah. That makes sense as billions of people own a smartphone. However, they'll still probably only get Netflix numbers at best.

Those people have zero interest in playing hardcore console games on their phones or tablet.

Netflix is cheaper, takes zero skills and it's available on every PC, TV, phone or console worldwide and yet they're only at 200 millions. What makes you think XCloud will break every barrier for gaming? Stadia is already there and it's a flop even with the bigger "reach"

Netflix isn't cheaper.

In Canada for the 4k Netflix it's over 20.00/month.

GPU is 15.00

The rest I can't disagree with, except I'd rather be actively participating 8n my entertainment than idly watching it while scrolling my phone.

Source of your analysis?

If we deal with digital, its 30% cut for MS, and 70% for the publisher.

This is Valhalla sales record. 12M sales world wide.

Since Valhalla is 60$ game, store owners will get 30%. 60-18=42. With playstation and xbox split being 2/1 according to console numbers, and other platform having Valhalla, xbox would have around 3-4m copies. Paying for 4m copies will cost 168m at 42$ price. That is not to count, the other sales xbox would have.
That is just digital, without any sales. Usually, the game is sold cheap after 1 year, so MS wont be paying at the 60$ price.

With that price reduction, MS would cost the game around 20$-30$ per copy. at 20$ price, 4m copies=80m. At 30$, 4m copies 120m copies.

Physical copies is even much cheaper. because of the cost associates with.

In 2010, OnLive did a breakdown for game price (retail games only):

main-qimg-60186931fa6306b13009f5b3d2fe8e25.webp

Because of these costs, Publishers wont earn that much from the 60$ on day1. So MS paying them $80m for day1 is much better value for them, since they will still sell copies, and non gamepass users will buy their games, and add other consoles sales.

This is AAA game, from ubisoft, which sells tons of copies. 12m in just 1 year isnt a joke. God of war reached 20m in 4 years, despite being on psnow, and free ps+ game.

Other games will cost less for MS to do gamepass day1.

The major problems for publishers is having enough market to do 4m on day1. Unless you are popular series, or have massive followers, you wont reach that number easily.

This is persona 5.
The report states that Persona 5 Royal has now shipped over 1.8 million copies, while Persona 5 Strikers sits at 1.3 million copies. Together with the original Persona 5 — which had sold more than 3.2 million units last we heard — the Phantom Thieves have clearly stolen a lot of hearts.Jun 30, 2021

The game was only on ps3 and ps4. and it managed to get that much as of now. game was released in 2016.

Gamepass day1 money would be a massive for these games. Since their life time is 2m.

Have I missed something but how are Amazon and Google competitors to Microsoft and gaming?

I cannot remember ever buying a game published by Amazon or even Google for that matter but then I have absolutely zero-interest in online or mobile gaming. The former is now so saturated that every MMORPG now looks and feels the same as every other (in my opinion) and mobile gaming is something I see as being for people who aren't really interested in gaming at all. Mobile gaming is also ruined by fee-to-pay mechanics and microtransactions, so much so that I just instantly switch off whenever I see any game advertising itself as Free-to-Play.

Imagine comparing Stadia to Gamepass.

I think when they talk about reach, they are just talking about possible customers. A good portion of the worlds population are potential customers when you do Console/PC/Cloud, with just console your possible customers for any piece of software are limited to just those that have purchased the console. Obviously attach rate would be quite low when talking about every person alive in the world. LOL

MS exec said he spends zero energy on console wars but he follows people on social media that actively fan the flames of console wars.
It's more than relevant in this thread.

I imagine it would be the same for Jim Ryan if he started following PS fanboys who spread FUD on social media. He'd likely get shit from all angles of the Xbox sphere had he started doing that and maybe even from some PS fans.

It was a miracle. Xbox was on the verge of closing.
He went to MS, and conviced to invest in a console, which was declining. He managed to gain the support of MS. That itself is a miracle.
How do you know any of this true? Do you have verified sources at Microsoft and you can be vetted? Pure bullshit.

OK Phil, couple questions , why does Xbox have exclusives, 'oNlY oN xBoX' and 'WOrLd PrEmIeReS' at your own events?

"Others bring console games to PC years later, not only making people buy their hardware up front but then charging them a second time to play on PC"
-Phil Spencer spending "energy" on the console war

Is he lying? Are others bringing titles to PC and only charging you once? I hardly see how this is console warring especially since I didn't even see a console mentioned. People are looking to be outraged.

This is clearly targeting Sony. No idea what you mean by "People are looking to be outraged". This isn't outrageous. But the console war is in Phil's mind no matter how much he pretends otherwise.

Read the story about how Phil convinced them to buy Minecraft.

Without a doubt. Console wars are rent free in Phil's head. Probably Jim's too. If people think these guys don't care about crushing the competition they are clueless. I guarantee their bonuses are tied to it.

Seems to me any developer putting games on both console and PC could be the subject. You might not know this but MS doesn't just make console games. In fact they actually have games that are only on PC. This is simple promotion just like when the two Sony executives handed PS4 games to each other to show how game sharing is handled on PS4. Would you call that 'warring'?

The point Topher Topher was making is that execs on both sides are warring and that obviously includes Phil. Him coming out to say he doesn't its just pure BS. How can any sane human being believe otherwise.

I mean fuck there's warring from PS and Xbox going back decades.

- PS used game video
- The Xbox 360 boat at the PS3 launch event
- Aron Greenberg's constant PS trolling on social media (and there must be tons of examples when Xbox 360 was doing so well)
- Andrew House during PS4 launch event: 'While others have shifted their message and changed their story, we were consistent in maintaining policies and a model that is fair and in tune with consumer desires'
- Shuhei Yoshida's tweet about how the PS4’s 32 launch regions tops Microsoft’s 13: ('-') .o0 (32 > 13)
There's heaps more examples I'm sure and yeah these fuckers ^^^ could have left out those little jabs at each other and everything would be fine.

These companies can promote their products without resorting to shit flinging but they don't. In some ways they probably like trolling each other and this kind of behaviour just enables warriors on both sides to take up arms and continue the battle here on the forums.
I kinda wish Sony, MS and Nintendo would stop with this shit to be quite honest because it continues to encourage warring. I'd rather we get more messages about unification and togetherness in this industry.

Give me more of these moments and stop the fucking shit flinging

The problem with console warring these days, is that old dudes are the ones who are engaging it.

Younger audience don't give a crap about. They want to play with their friends.

For us, we grow up, when the internet was infant. We had forums and we posted all the shit. Those times are gone now. People have gotten old.

Xbox was released in 2001. People who born in that age, are 20 now. People who were 10 years old, are 30 years old now.

Its just grown ups, who are arguing about it nonstop, because they didn't grow up from it.

Everyone is sick of it.

It's not that complicated dude. If Capcom for instance releases Street Fighter 5 on PC and PS4 you have to buy it twice. If MS releases Forza Horizon 5 on PC and Xbox you have to buy it once. He isn't 'warring' against Capcom because he is stating that MS is offering a better value. He is selling his platform not attacking anyone.

You see 'warring' I see simple promotion. Warring is the 'Xbox suxors' crap I see posted from fanboys time to time.

Yeah they are doing it later and that's because they need people to buy their console and invest in their ecosystem, they don't have windows, office or cloud services to make up for their gaming platform not making back all the money they are spending.

It really is less complicated than that. Spencer was clearly talking about Sony.

Eurogamer completely agrees even if you pretend otherwise.

“Spencer doesn't name Sony in his comments, but it's clear which company he is talking about here.”
