Nintendo Switch OLED: Worth It?

Yeah, so in light of not being able to find a PS5 or an Xbox Series X, I am considering a Nintendo Switch OLED. Thing is, do you think it’s worth it or should I just save my money for one of the others? Will the stock finally stabilize in the next several months or will it still be near to impossible to find? And if I did buy a Switch OLED, what games would you recommend?

When I was looking at a Switch a year or two ago I remember a game that was highly rated about police officers that had an anime style to it and it had a bike sequence in it, but can’t for the life of me remember the name of it.

Thank you for your valuable input and helping me decide on what to do!

Astral Chain

The Switch is great because of the library. If it has games you want to play, go for it.

Stock situation for XSX and PS5 will probably not improve until 2023. If you really want one, just follow Wario64 on Twitter and refresh often. We usually see a drop or two a day from various retailers.

I mean. Depends what you want out of your system. I think it’s 100% worth it.

at present, my most overall played system. Mind you think changes weekly lol.
But games really pop and look much better with it

Yeah, it was Astral Chain. I’ll probably pick one up, so got any recommendations aside from Astral Chain? I know I want that game.

Of course it’s worth it. I’ve got two words for you OP - Metroid Dread.

But yeah, I bought one and use it exclusively in handheld mode and I’ve easily put in over 100 hours on it and have 4 games so far. Cool little system… just wish the load times were a little faster but the oled is awesome. My first Nintendo system since the GameCube and I’m liking it.

I will state with certainty that the Switch OLED is the Ultimate Evolution of the Switch as we currently know it. I would recommend an Xbox Series S if you want to provide a next-gen experience. For the CURRENT gen (PS5/XBSX/S), an SSD is the barrier of entry. That is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the difference maker.

Probably other Nintendo first party titles such as

  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Zelda Breath of the Wild
  • Zelda Link's Awakening
  • Animal Crossing
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • Famicom Detective Club
  • Monster Hunter Rise
  • Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu
  • Fire Emblem Three Houses
MK8 and Ori 1&2 if you don’t own them on Xbox.

Question for switch oled owners: did you put a tempered glass screen protector on it? I really don't like having them on my switch screen but my second switch (the longer battery version), I decided not to use one and it has quite a few nicks and faint scratches. I would be so worried about the Oled screen getting scratched.

I put a screen protector on, I heard it can get scratched from the docking station

doesn’t interfere with the oled, some videos on YouTube that test this extensively

I picked one up because I promised my OG Switch to a friend "once they announced the pro" a few months before the OLED unveil. Oops. In all honesty though, that's probably more an excuse than a reason. I just like trying out new hardware.

Anyway, OLED a nice upgrade. I like the screen, the extended battery life is great, and it has a better all-round feel to it than the original. It's not a game changer though. Verdict:
  • If you don't have a Switch and are interested in the library, go for OLED.
  • If you have a Switch and really enjoy handheld mode, it's a solid upgrade.
  • If you have a Switch that stays docked most of the time, I'd give it a pass.

Even though I just bought in, I hope the Pro or a successor is around the corner. There are still Switch games that I want to pick up, especially local-multiplayer games, that just don't run well enough on the current system to be worth playing... I'm looking at you Hyrule Warriors.

What games do you like? Did you already have an Xbox one or PS4? I think XSX stock will be easy-ish to get after the holidays. Or go for the XSS, seems in stock a lot.

I think most important question that no one's asked yet is how often will you actually be playing the switch in handheld mode? If it's going to sit in the dock 90% of the time save some dough and get a regular switch.

I'm waiting for the Pro version than I will upgrade or just wait till the successor

I was in Best Buy last week and they had a bunch in stock so I picked one up. I already have the OG Switch. For me the OLED Switch is the way to play in handheld mode. It's not even close. The screen is vibrant and beautiful. The larger screen is easier for me to see.

It's definitely overpriced but if you're going to buy a dockable Switch OLED is the one to buy.

I have a switch, ps5, and an XBX. It completely depends on which games you like. I play xbox probably 60% of the time, ps5 30%, and switch 10%.

Ya my reg switch paid for about 70% of it, so the upgrade was worth it for me. Between the screen quality and size difference, it feels like it was worth it. If you are buying your first switch and using it at all in portable mode, it's a no brainer.

I’d be primarily playing it in handheld mode if I bought it. I tend to like anime styled or based games a lot, so I was considering Naruto UNS4 and My Hero One’s Justice 2 even though I’ve owned them in the past on PS4. With that said, yes, I’ve had both an Xbox One and PS4. The majority of my gaming library is on PlayStation, so ideally I would like to get a PS5 and the games interest me more than Switch’s offerings. I may save what I get for Christmas and my money for a while and try to score a PS5

Although the XSS is tempting as hell for the price and not having to wait as long or having to fight to track one down or pay way over MSRP for one. Ideally I hope XSX and/or PS5 stock stabilizes in the coming months. Probably not going to, though.

Would an XSS be a waste? I have a 4K TV, but it’s a few years old and while it’s a Samsung it’s not super fancy. I doubt I would even notice the difference, but who knows? Like I said, it’s tempting to see it readily available to buy online for $299.

The Xbox games do interest me too like Forza and Halo and I could pick up other games for the XSS too that I wanted for PS5 that are multi like Demon Slayer and in February I could get Saints Row and KOFXV.

If a Series X or PS5 were what you what looking for, then I don't see how getting an old and underpowered console that may be in its last year is a good choice.

If you're in Europe you could get a Series X easily OP. There are plenty here in Portugal in stock.

uses 'M$' - What year is it? Not 2002.
You can literally Google to find out for your self lol.
Ok well all the stores are out was kinda trying to get the consensus was like before the the holidays. Are scalpers going hard on them? Does Nintendo stock more frequently then Xbox and PlayStation? but thanks for the the lamest response that I’m sure only a 5yr old could come up with ”just google it “

My gamestop in my small town had 10 Christmas eve at 7pm. Walmart next door had 2 in the case. I used trade in credit for one at Gamestop. It definitely looks way better in handheld.

They're certainly easier to find than the PS5/XSX where I am... but that's Tokyo, so I'm not sure how much that helps.

Try looking for a decent (not too inflated) retailer bundle as scalpers don't usually want those. That's how I snagged mine. Of course, a couple of weeks later it looks like they have them available un-bundled, so patience pays, as per usual. *shrug*

if you never have a switch before then yeah get the oled.

if you have a 2019 model the only real differences are the screen/bezels and the kick stand on the OLED is way better too so you might not feel it's worth upgrading. i had a 2019 and upgrades. no regrets here.

if you never have a switch and don't want the OLED the reasons would be you want something cheaper, smaller, lighter, and more "portable". if you want a simple no thrills model then get the Lite...BUT it has a smaller (LCD) screen, lower battery life, and you can never play it connected to a TV (which defeats the whole idea of a Switch).

if you want portability then i would still highly recommend the OLED. the biggest reason is it has the best battery life. a Lite is rated for 3-7 hours (4 hours of BOTW) and the OLED is rated for 4.5-9 hours (5.5 hours of BOTW). Yes the OLED is bigger/heavier but it's still very much portable. i carry mine in my backpack all the time and it's no issue.

OLED has the far better screen compared to any other switch. It's OLED, it's the biggest screen, and small bezels. it has the best battery life of any model. it has the best kick stand. you can actually Switch by removing joycons to play in table top or dock it to a TV. i play mine in handheld, or use a grip mount and detach the joycons. if i want to play on my 55" tv i can do that.

it's the best Switch and you should get it. it's worth the extra money over the Lite.

genuinely, truly. hold out for the successor. if it's last you this long. i can feel it tbh. in my mystery brain. lol. but 3ds lasted a long ass time so who knows.

personally as a docked only player, but this would still greatly improve the handheld experience is way better performance. a pretty new screen didn't entice me, but for people whom got good deals, and first time buyers, etc, it's still a great product.

i just think that if i can still handle how it performs now i can just wait for a real upgrade.

Never used a screen protector on it and never got a scratch. I find it fairly easy to keep it from getting worn just put it in a slim case or a safe surface when you're done using it.
