I'm I or Kena does not get any love? Playing it and it looks really good so far.

Why is Tales of Arise this overlooked?

Probably because it has beautiful woman in it. We know that having beautiful woman nowadays in gaming is really toxic for game "journalists".

Joke aside, I have to play it. The game looks really good. Hope that it is as good as Xillia and Berseria.

The only list that matters is one without Village. Good stuff. Well done Time and well done Metroid.

Metroid is their number 1 🤔

Do you know that Metroid Dread was developed primarily by a Spanish studio, yes?

Besides the fact that even the most lowbrow mainstream magazine knows Nintendo, making it an exception and not the rule, Dread is developed by MercurySteam.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Really now? By what statistical parameter do you say so?

Just a general observation of not a lot of discussion about it on places like GAF, Era etc.

Yes, people are talking about it in the OT but not a lot of clamoring for it in any major GoTY discussion topics.

General observation has a very low statistical value. I've certainly seen people talk about it.

PS: Era doesn't really qualify as an "enthusiast forum" their enthusiasm isn't for games.

Lol you don’t need to learn me about Metroid, it’s a Nintendo IP and they talk about Sakamoto in the article, they obviously know the japanese gaming industry exist and didn’t discover Metroid because Dread was made by Mercury Steam.

Learn you? 🤔

Even assuming that your argument has merit (and it doesn't), Nintendo is the exception that confirms the rule when it comes to the consideration of the Japanese gaming industry among the people who write for mainstream press. It's pretty much all they know and care about, which isn't exactly a shining example of expertise.

Sable?

I fully completed Sable, just wish I could say the same for the people that made it. No combat at all, things that are clearly supposed to be something but don't work all over the map and "puzzles" that a toddler could solve. The game needed another year at least before releasing. It was a comfy walking simulator with a somewhat interesting story and world but it was not even in the vicinity of GOTY material.

This makes it the perfect GOTY material for a certain subset of the press.

Why is halo infinite and halo infinite multiplayer split? When I boot the game up, They are both under one launcher and not separate games, seems a little odd imo.

Wow, readers really don't think much of this game. I have no clue why it's winning all these awards. I'm playing it now. It's alright, but on the same level as Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, or Psychonauts 2.

Metroid dread is really miles better than anything else this year.. miles…

Everything else..

I can't imagine thinking this unless one literally has only the Switch and didn't play a single game on other platforms this year.

From who? These results kind of speak for themselves. It is not getting the same acclaim from players as it is the media. Have you played it? I have. It is decent. Nothing special in my opinion. It looks like a lot of gamers feel the same way?

Who are you playing it with?

My son.

It's certainly a good game in its niche, and I'm sure a lot of people like it a lot. Yet, I'm fairly positive not THAT many people who aren't journalists looking for the hipster choice would vote it as their overall GOTY.

It's definitely a good example of the disconnect between journalists and users nowadays.

My son.
I asked because depending on who/how you’re playing it the experience is totally diferent. Absolutely loved it playing with a best friend on the couch but it’s not nearly as entertaining playing online with random friends you have online. Also, tried with a non-gamer friend and it was not good. There’s skill involved and it becomes frustrating quickly if you’re playing with a newb.

I think some of you put too much stock in “players choice” as if metacritic user ratings don’t paint the entire picture on what thats about

There is no such thing as "too much stock" in the Player's Choice awards.

As a matter of fact, so far as I'm concerned, user-voted awards are the only ones that have any value whatsoever.

Why would a vastly outnumbered minority of self-elected elites be considered as having the slightest relevance compared to the people for who the games are made and that actually buy them?

Both journalist-voted and peer (developer)-voted awards tend to be excessively weighed down by other agendas and interests that have nothing to do with how fun the games are. And then there's the most ludicrous example, The Game Awards, in which the journalist vote counts as the vast majority of an award, while the popular vote counts as the vast minority, which is a massive aberration. 😂

Dread pushing weight 💪 Always good to see quality get recognition. Must've been the first time I've seen it claim the top spot. Returnal on number six is nice but I'd put it way higher. Phenomenal game. Can't wait to see what Housemarque cooks up next.

I trust journalist more for the simple fact that they are submitting votes as a conglomerate. Meaning that it is a number of opinions being weighed per outlet, which helps combat platform or genre bias. Not only that but they all around have more access to more platforms then the typical gamer that will fight for the two games that released specifically on the platform they own.

You’re generalizing and saying they don’t know the japanese gaming industry exist and then exclude Nintendo from your harsh take makes no sense. Maybe they excluded Tales simply because they don’t like JRPGs?
