PS5 owner: I just bought a Xbox Series X - I'm very impressed

It’s about ergonomics. Sonys layout is stupid for modern games but they stick with it because that’s how they always did it. It’s easy to get used to both, but given a choice I will always chose the Nintendo/Xbox layout unless I’m playing a game that uses the dpad as the main control mechanism.

Actually I would say the stick placement has always been fine, but the rest of the controller for PlayStation in the past has been lacking in ergonomic comfort, particularly the DS3. The DS4 improved but still was not as comfortable as Xbox, imo. That really has more to do with the handle grips though. The DualSense fixed pretty much everything from a comfort standpoint to me.

The DualShock 3 unfortunately ended up being a wireless DualShock 2 because Sony buckled under the pressure after they showed the boomerang controller. The DualShock 4 was pretty good except for the sticks. Early on when they were peeling I took to replacing with xbox analogs because they were grippy and ended up replacing them all gen because they were better until they wore out. The DualShock 4 with replaced sticks and the back buttons and a controller grip ended up being a really good controller for that last year or so. The dualsense is great and now that ive added back buttons it’s even better.

For me it’s the worst controller ergonomically they’ve made yet. A few alterations to the handles would have fixed that.

Dualsense rechargeable batteries are superior to me, simply because there are beautiful small official stands you can buy. When you're finished you just put it on the stand, you never have to plug anything or think about it... It just works.

No batteries to change, no nothing. It's 2021, AA batteries are a thing of the past.

And as you said, haptics are fantastic, every controller which doesn't have them feels outdated now.
Nah. This is vastly inferior. So now I need to spend an extra $30 for this "beautiful" stand and remember to put it on there when I'm done every time? Or if I decide to play for more than 4-5 hours I need to either plug the controller in or stop playing and charge it. Or spend $70 for another PS5 controller? Nah. This is not the way. This is what I had to do with the PS3 and it was awful.

I was never an Xbox guy, but I bought the XSX and AA batteries are superior. I keep my rechargeable batteries in the dock and when the batteries go out in my controller, I swap them out. Takes less than a minute. And I don't need multiple controllers to game for long periods of time. These built in batteries are the worst. They wear out over time and then people say, oh it's really easy to replace it. But you gotta open the controller, watch some youtube video about how to do it and pray you don't fuck it up. Again, this is not the way. Hopefully Sony will catch on with the PS6.

I wonder if the Dualsense design could have supported AA batteries with minimal changes. I prefer an easily-accessible battery compartment, and batteries that can be switched out at will with replacements - obviously, Xbox controllers tend to fit that criteria, and I'd prefer if Sony and Nintendo's controllers would, too.

I understand the convenience of rechargeable battery setups - it's how I roll on Xbox, too. I stick with 'charge n play' style battery packs that can be charged using the USB on the controller. Functionally, it works the same exact way as charging a Dualsense does, but with 2 major differences -

- the battery life is much, much longer on Xbox controller, even using the first party charge n play battery instead of high capacity rechargable AAs
- if the battery pack loses capacity with age... I can just pop it out. Replace it with a new one. Maybe order a new one online and just use bog-standard AAs while I wait for it to ship.

That kind of convenience matters to me, too - one form of convenience doesn't have to take precedence over another, but I can have both on Xbox pretty easily.

Yeah no. This is not a PC, a new generation is not about playing old games with better performance.

You put in a lot of effort there /S. I'll not bother replying anymore as you're just not assimilating what I post anyhow. Here's a condensed recap -

Forza Horizon 5, Apex Legends, Halo Infinite, The Ascent

3 out of 4 of the games I mentioned directly are new to this generation. You're just wrong, even on your own single minded point.

  • MS Flight
  • It Takes Two

  • Gears 5
I don't even have to list things like these, currently available -
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Destiny 2 next gen updates (game is sublime on a series X 65" HDR 4K.
  • DOOM eternal
  • Fortnite next gen updates
  • Avengers
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • The Gunk
  • The Medium
  • Sea of Thieves next gen updates
  • Assassin's Creed Valhalla
  • Far Cry 6
But then imagine I started mentioning games coming out for new consoles this gen -
  • Fable
  • Evowed
  • Starfield
  • Redfall
  • Bright Memory Infinite
  • Shredders
  • CrossfireX
  • Elden Ring
  • Perfect Dark
  • Everwild
  • Hellblade II
  • Scorn
  • Suicide Squad
In short it's just straight up disingenuous of posts like yours saying no games to play, new or old. Your statement is proven stupid with some basic facts. One has to wonder if you even like gaming or play games.

Nah, I'll take built-ins like with Elite Series 2 every time. What gets me about regular Xbox controllers is that they don't even bother to put rechargeable AA batteries in the box. If they are going to charge the same amount as DualSense then either pass the savings on and drop the price or include something better than a pair of non-rechargeable batteries.

But to each their own.

Nah. I've tried both and for me personally replaceable batteries are the superior option. Maybe the Xbox controller should be a few dollars cheaper, but I'm not losing sleep over it. While I haven't used the ps5 controller the Xbox controller is significantly more comfortable and ergonomic so I'll pay the same price for those benefits.

What do you do with the ps5 of you game more than 5 hours in one session? Did you need to buy a second controller for those longer sessions? That's not something you need to ever worry about with the Xbox controller.

Series X controller is a bit cheaper then the DS.
The best option would be an internal battery and an option for AA's

It is all personal preference. I was stoked when MS decided to put rechargeable in their premium controller myself. Even with my regular XSX controller I invested in Nyko rechargeable stands for the convenience of sitting the controller down in the stand to recharge. I really don't care for fumbling around with rechargeable AA batteries. But that's just me.

I use multiple controllers regardless of what system I'm gaming on. I think using one controller all the time shortens its lifespan. These are plastic controllers and they will wear out and start getting creaky. In any case, I'm not one to game for more than an hour or two at a time so this isn't a concern.

But I'll grant you that for those looking for the cheapest option and who game for long stretches rechargeable AA batteries certainly fill the bill.

Got it. Back in the ps3 days I was the only one in my house that played games and I HAD to buy a second controller because I would always have my controller die on me and playing it plugged in was annoying so I was forced to buy another controller.

Now I have multiple xbox controllers because my kids will play too, but I only use MY controller when I play. No need to swap out which I prefer! If the controller eventually dies that's fine. I'll buy another controller then. But not a second controller just to deal with my main controller dying. That's a waste of money. And I would probably have to do that with the ps5 because I've read the controller life when playing ps5 games is not very long.

Congratulations, I want to do the same thing. I will wait for couple Xbox games to release and then buy one also. It's the best combo to have everything and don't pay crazy amount of money

Nobody will catch on with AA batteries, it's an obsolete technology. It makes Xbox controller look like it's stuck in the past. Maybe not for you, but as a high-tech product, it's a bad look, only products still using AA batteries these days are toys or low cost electronic devices. I never had to replace a single battery in a controller, none of them ever died on me since PS3. As I said, just put it on the charging stand, takes no time, zero hassle, you can't do better than that.

Microsoft will catch on with haptics though, like Phil Spencer already hinted at recently.

Yeah no. This is not a PC, a new generation is not about playing old games with better performance.
I think that's a very narrow minded way of looking at it.

New Generation is not solely about playing old games with better performance, but it is an incredible added value feature.

Being able to play games from 4 generations of consoles on a single device, and many with big enhancements over their original releases is a big positive, if not anyone's primary reason to buy a console.

RE: Topic of batteries:

It's a mixed bag for me. Not a big fan of AA battery slots, it adds extra bulk to the controller but it's such a non issue in practice. A 4 pack of rechargeable eneloops + charger is $15 to $20. You always have 2 batteries charged while 2 are in the controller, so you're never out or have to rely on needing to plug in a cable while playing.

But then again you also have the option of getting a rechargeable pack, either official or a cheaper off-market one, to make the charging solution similar to the Dualshock/sense controllers.

They need to hire some engineers from Apple then.. best haptics in electronic devices out there.

Best haptics outside of controllers... Haptics on a controller are very different to those on a smartphone. On PS5 games, haptics make you feel the rain falling in multiple points on the controller, the sand you're walking in, things like that. I don't think you could do the same on a smartphone due to it being flat and very thin. Taptics on iphone is still pretty impressive, it sometimes feels nearly like physical buttons, but the nature of smartphones is a big limitation.

Same here. That's why I love Elite Series 2 controllers as well. Just set it down on the charging stand when I'm not using it.

Somehow your left hand thumb is resting "naturally" in a different position than your right hand thumb? That doesn't make any sense. My thumbs rest comfortably on either controller.
The right thumb rests naturally on the face buttons which are also used by most games. Mostly FPS and TPS really require the right stick. Again my point isn't that the PlayStation controller is wrong only that it isn't designed where your thumbs rest naturally. I'm glad you like it!

I read so much discussion about haptics and vibration profiles, I keep my controller vibration off via system level settings, lol.

I don't like the feel of a vibrating device in my hand, just a personal preference.

So you do have to pay an extra $30 for that "beautiful" stand? LOL, yeah that is a great look. Very high tech and "beautiful." My controllers were dying on me all.the.time with my PS3. That is why I don't want to go back to Sony's solution. It's awful. Very poor battery life built in and if you have a gaming session longer than 4-5 hours you either need a second controller or you need to plug your controller in. You want to talk about a bad look, something stuck in the past? Playing your console with a controller plugged in! LOL. Can you imagine?

Sony needs to do better. If they want to do the proprietary battery method, let us easily swap it out so we don't have to go back to a plugged in controller. *shudder*

Yeah, haptics might come to the Xbox controller. Maybe gyro to. Who knows? I don't feel like I'm missing out though. Well, maybe with gyro. Being able to make more precise aiming in certain games would be great. But look at the PS4 and PS5. Even though it has gyro it rarely gets used. Only Nintendo has figured out how to use it well.

This is actually a benefit to me, lol! I like a controller that has some weight to it. The PS3 controller was so damn light (especially before Sony finally decided to add rumble) that I felt like I was going to crush the thing. When they finally added rumble it was a little better, but still not heavy enough for my liking. I've heard the PS5 controller is heavier (although I haven't held one) so it sounds like Sony is on the right track. Give me some more weight dammit!

That's not me who decides what people like or don't like. Everybody hates AA batteries these days, it's repulsive when buying high tech products. You can't use AA batteries if you want to look like a premium product. Maybe for you it's ok, but we're mostly dinosaurs on this place. Like I told you, nobody plugs anything anymore, people use charging stands. Like on your phone. Or do you think the next iphone will use AA batteries too ? It's time to move on.

I have 2 controllers, I could play days without plugging anything, just put it on the charging stand, like you do with your phone.

Now about haptics : PS5 haptics are very superior to what Nintendo does, it's on another level. It's extremely impressive on games like Returnal or Astrobot. It adds a lot to immersion. I hope you'll be able to experience that.

Can you link me to the survey you read that shows that everybody hates AA batteries? This is the first I'm hearing of it. Or rather, are you just talking out of your ass? I'm guessing it's the latter, but if you do have the evidence, please post it.

Nobody plugs anything? WTF does this even mean? That "beautiful" charging stand, does that have a wire? Or is it pulling electricity out of the air?

LOL, so you prove my very point. You HAD to buy two controllers because of the awful battery life and the built in battery. Nice. That's why I prefer AA batteries. No need to spend another $70 on a controller just so I don't have to worry about a dead battery.

I didn't even compare Nintendo's haptics to the PS5? I mentioned the comparison on gyro. And on that front, Nintendo's gyros are very superior to what Sony does. Have you tried Botw or Splatoon 2 with gyros? Perfection. But I'd welcome gyros on the Xbox controller. And haptics too...All so long as the battery life remains where it is. Right now the XSX controller gets 30+ hours. The PS5 controller gets 4-6 hours. It's really not a contest.

You neeed to read my posts. I wasn’t composing about Xbox, I was complaining about PlayStation. In fact I said Xbox has two next gen games (Halo and Forza) I know many wouldn’t count halo since it’s basicAlly a cross gen game but I haven’t seen any Xbox one images and I’m pretty sure it must run like shit. PlayStation on the other hand has none unless you wanna count Ratchet.
I said I would need at least 5 games to buy a console, right now no console has that number.

Halo Infinite is a "next gen game" as long as it runs like shit on last gen consoles? And why would you not "count" Ratchet? It has more claim to being "next gen" than Halo or Forza.

What is obsolete about giving me a choice?!
There is absolutely no drawbacks to having AA batteries compartment.
-You can use AA/swap quickly.... every 40 fucking hours because the battery life is so good on xbox controller
-You can use rechargables and swap
-You can BUY A DAMN PLAN'N'CHARGE kit so you can connect with your damn cable to charge. So You can make it dualsense controller.
With dualsense you are locked in. Battery life is shit and you will not be able to replace that battery in years. Go ahead and find NEW AND ORIGINAL dualshock3 batteries. Only chinese or warehouse used up batteries.

That said - I love everything more about Dualsense but internal defenders are selfish fools. "oh it is comfortable, so fuck you all"...

the play and charge kit is even USB C.... there is no excuse to make a controller that cannot take the kit, AA or rechargables.

I know I make it sound like a bigger deal but not really :p I am using my Dualsense and just connect it to charge overnight. It's not a big deal... but I don't like the internal is better narrative.

edit: Of course there are benefits to INTERNAL:
-lower weirght
-better controler rigidity
-obviously charge overnight with no additional cost of batteries or charge kit
-maybe smaller footprint

Series x have been widely available since last week on my country (store in my town got 5 units on friday/saturday, so I walked in on saturday and bought one, they still seem to have the other 4 left today).

So I bought one, as playstation gamer since PS1 and while I have xbox OG+360, I havent used them much.

Tested on Sony A8H oled.

I'm giving my notes after few days, and from viewpoint of long time Sony fan.

Controller: (PS5 wins easily, partly personal preferences, partly features)

- Xbox controller ergonomics is bad vs dualsense.
- it feels small and lower quality
- stick placement is worse, left stick is on "wrong place" so it feels un-natural and unconfortable. When resting my thumbs relaxed, their natural position is of course symmetrical like dualsense, so on xbox left thumb feels like it is not right.
- sticks are too loose, not stiff enough
- sticks feel bit too tall/high
- triggers feel worse than dualsense
- buttons feel weird
- no mic
- AA-batteries are JOKE, I laughed when they were in the box because I didnt remember that they still use them. Dualsense with internal battery is superior, as it is easy to charge on dock. I had launch ps4 controllers that had +5000h on them and battery still lasted long enough (3-4h at least) in the end of last gen, so I'm not scared about it. And changing internal battery is easy anyway, for skilled hobbyist.
Dualsense is just years ahead of xbox controller. Of course people whom have gamed with xbox for years think that xbox style is better, so it is partly personal preferences, but dualsense is still objectively better controller.

Noise levels: xbox wins, but both are quiet enough.
+ Fan sound is low and nice, it seems to be quite steady and doesnt fluctuate much
- My PS5 have minor coil whine, I would rate my PS5 4.5/5, it is sometimes audible while gaming, but nothing that would make it annoying, unlike all my ps4 consoles.
+ xbox isnt silent, it is not possible to have silent console if there are moving parts, but it is really really quiet.

I can hear it to my couch from 2m away, but because the fan have this low and nice sound, I usually dont notice it while gaming, only when there isnt much of a noise from game. More like, when I turn it off, I notice that there were a noise. I would rare xbox noise levels around 5-/5 so almost perfect, and I am super sensitive to get annoyed by noises, so it is probably as good as it can get. On room with more background noise, it is probably "silent" to some people, not literally silent, but masked out by air con/traffic noise etc. on more noisy apartments.

Build quality / looks: no clear winner / both win.
I like how PS5 looks
I like how xbox looks
both feel high quality consoles
size doesnt matter to me
xbox feels solid unit

SSD expansions: no clear winner, depends of user
- PS5 SSD upgrade is cheaper, not really difficult to do
- xbox SSD is easier, but more expensive
- xbox SSD is easy to take out, if gamer have multiple systems

Operating system: PS5 wins 100 - 0
- What a culture shock, I have xbox og + 360, but damn this series x OS is hot mess.
Playstation OS is just so streamlined and simplistic, but this xbox OS is like getting lost on a maze. Not user friendly experience at all. I almost hate how messy it is.
it just feels like windows, in a bad way. too much icons, too much stuff on the screen. I guess it can be customized so maybe it helps. But playstation is clear winner to me.
But, consoles are for games, and I can turn them on -> not a real problem.

Games: no clear winner

I have played forza, flight simulator, halo infinite and aliens fire team. They nice. Maybe ratchet & clank looks better than these, but these look good enough.
-Flight simulator have way too much of fps lag/stutter, mainly when panning the camera, it feels really laggy. Maybe VRR fixes it, but my tv doesnt support it.
Other games have been more stable and haven't noticed lag.
I dislike that there is series S, which will/could lead into having worse games than what they could be, if there would be only one system to dev to,
on the other hand crossplay between PC and xbox is nice, and pc versions also add dev time, so maybe series s doesnt mess it up that much anyway

Bonus: gamepass
with normal price gamepass would cost almost 600€ for 3 years, so it would be epicly bad deal and waste of money.
But I bought live gold 12 month codes for 32€ each, had to activate them using VPN (so bit of a hassle, but nothing too bad for a nerd) and then upgraded my 36 months with 1€ to 36 months of game pass ultimate.
So, for around 100€ it is really good deal, without it I would not play many xbox games, but now it allows me to test and play many games.
With this 1€ upgrade it is indeed incredible deal, without it is almost a scam as it gets really expensive after years of paying it.

TL;DR:
PS5 is better as whole, dualsense is superior controller (to me) and playstation OS is much more user friendly, but xbox is bit more quiet and game pass with 1€ upgrade deal is epic.
PS5 gets 5-/5
Series x gets 4.5/5

Real winner: me

For the first time I have all current gen systems (sony, nintendo, microsoft), and while I dont have enough time to play em all, it is nice to have the main systems from Sony + xbox to be so close on performance level, and super cheap gamepass will save time & money when I can play multiplatform games on xbox, if they come to gamepass.

What is obsolete about giving me a choice?!
There is absolutely no drawbacks to having AA batteries compartment.
....

edit: Of course there are benefits to INTERNAL:
-lower weight
-better controller rigidity
-obviously charge overnight with no additional cost of batteries or charge kit
-maybe smaller footprint
For me it is that firstly that a poor kid receiving the item (even 2nd hand as a gift) is then in a constant cycle of buying batteries or buying something else - whether they can afford it or not, so not very inclusive -, and secondly it means they've provided less technology while charging the same as competitors(Nintendo/Sony that use the expensive (lithium-ion) option - so presumably they have a better margin on their pads; especially if getting a kickback from Duracell IIRC or they are less effective at making the devices.

Fast charging (eg10mins for 1hr) is now pretty widespread, so playing with a USB cable for 10-20mins is probably the preferred option for the wider market, given that between the Switch, PS4 and X1 there appears to be a correlation with console sales and technology used. IMHO xbox are in an echo chamber on the issue of tiering their controller technology and upselling an Elite pad - which should be the only option, and the pack-in IMO.

As a non-Xbox buyer I wouldn't want to buy a device and then instantly be upsold on extras - like getting on a Ryan Air flight - I want an amazing standard experience and the games to impress.

The negative is the same as every Xbox - No exclusives outside of Halo/Gears/Forza.

Whatyearisthis.jpg 😂

If you have insider info that Ninja Theory, Rare, Obsidian, Compulsion and the entirety of all the Zenimax studios will devote themselves solely to producing Halo, Gears and Forza games, I’d like to hear it. Also if you’ve heard about all their announced exclusives being canceled.
Of all the things to say in 2021.

I would rare xbox noise levels around 5-/5 so almost perfect, and I am super sensitive to get annoyed by noises, so it is probably as good as it can get. nice to read an honest post with no hidden agendas, wish there were more like this.

Pretty sure a standard Dual Sense is $10 more than a standard Xbox Series controller.

So we are 6 pages deep and the most controversial difference between the consoles are the controllers ;D I guess theiy are the closest they ever been. Both have great games coming and are nearly identical perfomance/hardware wise.

But that moves the goal posts because the cost in this thread is surely about the comparative SRP of the consoles with the pad as a pack-in and the overall deal - and anyway the individual SRP of the pads or typical price in a region isn't so clear cut, especially when the technology in a dualsense is different from the previous gen pads.
