As much as I hate to admit it, Returnal just felt like an indie game compared to Ratchet which felt like an AAA title with incredible graphics, storytelling, and setpieces. Returnal is the better game, but in this day and age you gotta do more than just have great combat and level design.

True I guess I'm still in shock how safe and boring the new R&C was. I platinumed (easy as fuck) and instantly forgot the game. Giving this GOTY accolades is like giving a Michael Bay movie awards. It's flashy as shit and looks good but there's very little there.

Out of playstation 5 games including ports and cross-gen titles, Rift Apart was the clear winner for me. Felt like thte only game this year that offered a taste of next gen gaming

Congrats Insomniac! #1 for me too on PS5, gave me what is quite likely the best family playthroughs I’ve done in my whole life because of the best localization ever. (It’s voiced to perfection in Swedish, thanks Insomniac!)
Worthy winner! 👏

Returnal felt indie? Sounds like you and I played a different Returnal game.

Felt like a AA game to me with some very slick graphical effects in a few places. I love the sci-fi setting and most of the combat.

I think the game really didn't shine in most other areas though. Randomized levels. Poor balance on the upgrade system / parasites. Almost zero progression or innovation to balance the roguelike elements. No save at launch.

I caved and got it for $50 when I was hesitant, partially because so many people on here seem to genuinely love the game. But I honestly felt like it's a fun action game, but severely overrated on here. I'd put Ratchet over it and I haven't even played Ratchet.

I'd love a Returnal 2, or something similar that abandons the roguelike element entirely and fleshes out the rest of the game design (level design, gameplay balance, meaningful progression, exploration, more alien imagery not wholesale ripped from Prometheus).

Report me if I continue to console war
I haven't played either, but just looking at gameplay and playing ratchets of past returnal looks more original and alluring.

Well I played and finished both and think Returnal was absolutely the better "video game" while Ratchet was the better "production." Both fantastic experiences for me, but I would put Returnal over Ratchet without hesitation for this particular award.

I can't agree with your assessment of Returnal after having finished it. I might have before I did though. I quit the game almost three times. But when I finally made that breakthrough I was so glad I didn't and also so glad the game was the way it was. It wouldn't have felt nearly as rewarding with save systems and more "progression." I actually started a fresh game immediately after beating it my first time, and played the entire game from beginning to end without dying once in one sitting. It took about two hours I think. I had died like 50 times before that. It just proved to me that I had actually gotten better at the game, instead of some kind of semi-guaranteed "you'll be able to win if you just build up enough" experience of almost everything else out there. Then you add in how the story was delivered (Silent Hill 2-esque IMO, very character/psychology based), the fantastic score, the perfect controls ... I just felt like it was a total masterpiece after my second run through. The kind of experience that will stand out in your memory for years. Not overrated IMO. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

However, I agree a bit about your idea for Returnal 2. I think it's setup and feel would be perfect for what would essentially be 3D Metroid. I don't think the game needs a sequel at all, and in fact it kind of can't without ruining the story IMO. But if they took the exact same gameplay setup and applied it to a Metroidvania style game it would be incredible.

It's beaten me down for sure, so maybe I will have the same breakthrough as you have some day. Definitely not giving up on it. But I play lots of action games, and the difficulty seems a little off as well to me at the moment.

That's nuts that you could beat it in one run though. Makes sense that you're into it if it's clicked that much for you. Even if the combat fully clicks for me, I just think it needed to do more to excel in other areas to take top spot for the year. As it is now, I still think it's a good game, just overrated.

As a non-PS5 owner Ratchet is the only game I feel like I'm missing out on

Deathloop is like....everything I hate about modern video games

500k sales in 3 months vs 1 million in 1 month for Ratchet. It never stood a chance in popular vote. Who knows? maybe with a $40 price tag like Miles and Uncharted Lost Legacy or a demo or a better marketing push wouldve evened the odds.
Sales have nothing to do with anything. An indie game like Death's Door was voted best new game of November on the PS Blog over games that sold millions more like COD, BF, and many others.

Yep. Just like the old ratchet games. This are seriously games aimed at kids judging from how easy they are.
I’ve always says returnal is an indie game but people just don’t want to a knowledge it.
If you take returnal out of the race what choose you had? There are no PS5 games that aren’t cross game but Ratchet.

What is the criteria for best PS5 game though? It can only be next-gen and/or released on PS5?

I'd give it to something like Hitman 3, Death Loop or Returnal. Even if the latter feels like an indie game, I'm not sure why that would effect its GOTY status.

Are we only giving it to R&C because it fits a narrow definition of what people think GOTY is? Platform exclusive, AAA, shiny graphics game?

Death Stranding DC.

Its a game that's going to be remembered long after everything else this year is forgotten.

Eh Ratchet deserves it as much as any of those other games. 88 rated game making it one of the highest of the year and it's the most impressive next-gen game out right now.
It is indeed impressive… imo the best graphics I saw in next-gen consoles until now.

Haven’t even bought R&C Rift Apart, I know it is probably considered the flagship ”Only on PS5”-title but Returnal and Demon’s Souls are more up my alley.

It’s simply one of those games I’ll get somewhere down the line.

It’s absolutely amazing if you have kids, the swedish voice acting is of Disney quality, they’ll think it’s like they watch a kids TV show, can’t recommend it enough.

Returnal in its original state is not worthy of being called the best PS5 game, no matter how much its fans want it to be. the issues with crashes + no suspend feature crippled the game for most of its lifetime and were only recently resolved.

Ratchet is great with a big BUT
that "but" is, it's only actually good on the highest difficulty. on the highest difficulty the game is just about challenging enough and fights actually need strategy and they need you to actually use the game mechanics the game provides.
even on normal, the game is so fucking baby easy that you can win almost any fight by just running up to enemies and meleeing them nonstop. even the "Resistance Leader" setting (second highest) is still too easy imo.

I died about 6-7 times during my play-through on the highest setting and these deaths were mostly when I tried to level up a weapon that wasn't really good for the situation I was in, so I basically played like an idiot to get some XP on weapons, which got me killed. I think 2 deaths were in the arena challenges

to think that there are 2 settings below the normal one is mind boggling to be honest lol, I guess they wanted to make sure game journos can finish the game 🤷‍♂️
