Remedy Entertainment signs a global development, license and distribution agreement with Tencent for the co-operative multiplayer game codenamed Vanguard

The game codenamed Vanguard (“the game”), Remedy’s original intellectual property, is a free-to-play, co-operative PvE shooter that combines Remedy’s narrative expertise and action gameplay into an immersive multiplayer experience. The game is developed with the Unreal Engine for PC and console platforms. Remedy will develop and publish the game worldwide, excluding selected Asian markets, where Tencent will localize and publish the game.

The game’s development is currently in the proof-of-concept phase. Its development budget up to the end of the first year of live operations will be in the range of a typical Remedy AAA game budget. This development will be co-financed by Remedy and Tencent. In addition, Tencent will localize the game for the selected Asian markets and cover the related localization costs.

Remedy and Tencent will be responsible for their own publishing and game operating costs in their respective territories while sharing a portion of revenue to the other party after the recoupment of the development costs.

As part of the agreement, Remedy has also licensed Tencent worldwide rights to develop and publish a mobile version of the game. Tencent will cover the costs for developing and publishing the mobile version. The parties have agreed on a separate revenue sharing scheme for the mobile version.

“Vanguard marks Remedy’s first entry into Games-as-a-Service business model, executed by our top tier team of free-to-play experts. We are building something new and exciting for co-operative multiplayer space, on top of Remedy’s strengths. Expanding our capabilities to take on publishing responsibilities is the next step in the development of our company. We are excited for this long-term partnership with Tencent and with confidence can say that it is an excellent fit in supporting Vanguard’s ambitious plans. Vanguard is a global opportunity, and Tencent can support Remedy internationally, and lead the operations in Asia and the mobile markets.” Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy Entertainment.

Yeah ... I'm good. Clearly not for me.

Well of course, Remedy were always greedy cunts and have accepted any shady deals. They did it with Alan Wake with that stupid exclusivity back then as far as I remember and same with Quantum Break which was a total failure and almost made them bankrupt, then they did it with Control with Epic Store, now this shit.

As much as I love their games, they can fuck off

Tencent is giving them money to develop a game.
Said game seems to be aimed more at the asian market.
Remedy is responsible for the game.
Tencent is going to publish and localize the game in asia.

People are angry because what?

You want Remedy to try localizing and publishing in a region they have no expereince in?
Or rather find a global publishing partner so they can get fucked over?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
As long as this doesn't impact Alan Wake 2 in any way, shape or form. I'm OK with Remedy using Tencent's monies :D

No one said that. Tencent will just deal with the asian market of Remedy developed game, but with these deals, IT IS NEVER EVER, just about publishing the game in the asian market. It will suffer a lot to cater to that market among other things. They won't make two separate games.

So you are saying it will likely be aimed at the asian market?

One of my all-time favorite game studios. Will do them the respect of seeing what it is, but doesn't sound like it's for me. We shall see, though.

They might strike gold.
But with Tencent overseeing a mobile F2P game.....expect to be lootbox'd/mtx'd to death.
The deal is good for them....I just dont think the game will be good for me.

As long as they are getting money and they can keep working on their unique single player experiences with all the money they are getting im all for it.
Keep working on that Northlight engine and figure out an upscaling technique that lets currentgen machines play these games at decent framerate.

I doubt CrossfireX and Vanguard are Remedys A team....the A team is likely working on Alan Wake 2.

I have the suspicious that if Tencent were a Spanish / Australian / Danish company this wouldnt be a problem for most folks.
They (Remedy) also signed a deal with Epic Publishing.....people werent happy about that either.
I think the only publishers who get a pass on GAF are Annapurna, Nintendo, Private Division, Devolver and Sony.
Sign a deal with basically any other publisher and people will be "upset".

As long as they keep getting dat moola and eventually make Remedy Publishing so they no longer even need to deal with publishers this is a good first step.
The safety blanket of Tencent co-financing lets them get the gist of Publishing and if it works out.

Wierd to name it Vanguard when there’s a CoD installment with the same name.
Just a codename (working title).
I doubt they will actually release the game as Vanguard.

If anything it should excite people who don't like the woke stuff. China is kinda the antithesis of that.
That's not how it works. China knows that the woke movement is weakening the West, which is why they provide funding to the organizations that push the woke narrative. China knows the woke movement is dangerous to a stable society, which is precisely why they use it for foreign relations, but remain extremely racist themselves domestically.
When COVID-19 was speculated to have come from a lab in Wuhan, China called the West racist/xenophobic for even considering that.

Makes perfect sense, they are owned by one the communist party entities called Epic Games.

The public company Remedy is owned by communist party entity Epic Games of which the controlling shareholder is Tim Sweeney?

People is angry because they hate comunism, Tencent is Chinese and they think the Chinese government or its ruling party controls all the companies in the country and does many awful things. Many of them boogeyman propaganda stories coming from China becoming the top 1 in many areas.

They may not know the Chinese government/CCP also fucked Tencent in multiple times and may also ignore their country also did awful stuff in places lke Guantanamo or the Middle East.

Regarding gaming companies, Asia is the biggest region in the world in terms of players and revenue, so game companies want to publish their games there. Specially China, because it's the first country of the world in revenue. In the same way that if you want to release and be successful in the west on consoles you must pass an age rating and certificate by Sony/Nintendo/MS/whatever and if possible to get the support from these platform holders to get enough visibility to be very successful, same goes with China: you should get their certificates and if possible to partner with a top publisher or platform holder from there to get enough visibility in that market.

So it's normal to see western or Japanese publishers to partner with companies like Tencent to publish the game in China. Specially companies where these Chinese invested money, as it is the case of Remedy. In most cases these Chinese companies invest on a western company that already is successful and help them to enter the Chinese market, helping them to grow in a win-win relationship. So the value of this company increases, so their investment becomes more profitable. They don't try to influence in these companies, and even if they would want they couldn't do it with a (often tiny) minority stake, as it's what they have in the cases of Remedy, Epic or Ubisoft just to name a few.

Remedy is owned by Epic, Epic is majority owner(60%) but Tencent is minority owner of EG at 40%.
Tencent own 4% of Remedy, so its a communist party circle jerk over there.
So:
60% of Remedy is Epic.
4% of Remedy is Tencent.

Remedy is a public company.
You can literally check who their shareholders are.

So why dont we do that:

wxh6ZzR.png

Individuals own around 60% of the company with Teri, Sam Lake and Maki having around 30%....basically a controlling share, unless all the other individuals all come together.

Whatever percentage Epic and Tencent have in Remedy, its no where near enough to be even close to being a controlling share

I thought Epic did acquire remedy but they actually only signed a deal for exclusivity for their next 2 games And as for TenCent, here is the article from this year:https://investors.remedygames.com/a...ital-accendo-owns-14-0-after-the-transaction/

Are they big enough to handle something like this? Don't know. Don't care. They're giving us Alan Wake 2 and that's all I care about.

I wish Tencent WOULD offer me some money right now so I can look them square in the eyes and tell them... pleasure doing business with you!!

Hulk Hogan Agree GIF

I can’t help but feel Remedy are over-stretching themselves. They aren’t a massive studio but have multiple games on the go. Alan Wake 2 alone will take up most of their staff.

How are the deals shady? Because you don't like them they are shady? Or do you just like throwing around negative adjectives that other people throw around without knowinwh what they mean? They are business, a public traded now too they have a duty to make as much money as possible to their shareholders. They are not doing anything that every major publisher/developer hasn't already done.

The idea that Control made them bankrupt was absurd, you either pulled that out of your ass or you heard it from someone else pulling it out of theirs. The company is worth of $500M USD, they've had growing revenues and most of their quarters have been profitable and the only unprofitable quarters are when they expand their personnel to .

These exclusivility deals are great for developers because they get a lot of free marketing and a bunch of cash upfront that doesn't cover the development costs but greatly reduces it and in turn great reduces the risk of the project without affecting the reward. Which is why platform owners go around throwing away money and so many companies want to accept these kinds of deals. It seem like you just have this weird bias against Epic or Tencent and like throwing around a bunch of bullshit

Welp...

At least until Tencent can outright show they have very little to no ties to the CCP (last time I checked some 20% of upper boards people had direct ties to the CCP).

This is actually quite reassuring, at least on the surface. Might have to rescind that previous post.
