This CES, Samsung is introducing their second Mini LED monitor, the Neo G8.

32" with 1000R curve, 4K 240Hz and 2000 nits peak.
The Neo G9 has 2048 local dimming zones but its panel area is larger, so I would count on 1000 - 1500 zones in this model, which is still a lot for a monitor.
No word on pricing yet, but if the Neo G9 costs $2500 then I'd expect this to cost at least $1500.

It's still pricey, but it's definitely a step in the right direction for decent HDR gaming monitors.

4K 240hz seems excessive but I guess you could just drop res and play very high refresh when you want and native res otherwise. Ain’t nobody running native 4k240 except for maybe valorant or csgo lol

I don't want a curved montor
Why not? At these sizes I actually do prefer curved monitors as they adapt the picture so much better to my eyesight, especially in games.

Agreed. I'd rather have it a bit cheaper and 120Hz to be honest.
What I do like is the mini LED FALD.

OLED or no LED
Coming from someone with an OLED TV, OLED tablet and OLED smartphone, I really don't want an OLED monitor.

Looks amazing until you google Samsung's monitor quality control issues, how common they are and the customer service hell some g9 owners are currently living in

As well as the fact that Displayport 2.0 monitors are like 6-12 months away

and VA >>>> IPS for sane gamers who game in a batcave like situation and not in some brightly lit living room with no blinds like a madman

Also IPS glow bothers the hell outta me I don't know how people can live with that

What a combo..

VA = 100 % guaranteed smearing + curved = bonus scanlines for that awesome blinds over your window look. Pure genius.

If anyone even crazy enough to consider this, better wait for C2 42" . It's still too big , but at least without so many other glaring flaws.

I thought this article was pretty funny.

Who the fuck wants to do all that just to use OLED? I'm playing a fucking CRPG how am I supposed to hide the HUD?!

True. Only way out is to pay extra for warranty and only buy from big local retailer or well known e-tailer that you know will replace the TV incase of burning with no questions asked.

I'd find a better guide cause you don't have to do half that crap unless you plan using it as a monitor for the next decade plus.

Given how stupid high end "Monitor" pricing typically is (especially spec pushing), I fully expect this will cost triple or quadruple the 42" OLED street prices.

Looks like a cyborg prostitute's arse on a pole.

Thank christ not non-VA, what a waste of all those zones and brightness output that would be otherwise.

Still va?
don't
I expect a lot of va clouding. Don't waste money. No amount of mini leds will save it

What do you mean by VA clouding? VA panels have higher native contrast and provide the least amount of blooming when compared to traditional faster response time panel types used in monitors, like IPS or ADS. I don't know if TN is still a thing really, but that too.

contrast is not everything when it comes to VA.
The picture is not uniform ad can be splotchy. It's just how bent VA monitors are.

Ahh okay, thats something thats specific to monitor panel/a quality control issue though surely? As even 6 year old VA TV panels are amazing looking in the dark and don't have that issue at all:

Thats the uniformity picture for my 2016 65" ZD9 which has a VA panel. I've no experience with VA monitors though so interesting to learn that.

edit - Also I just realised we are talking about a curved screen, maybe thats the whole issue.

I had some good VA monitors. Depends how well you take the picture really and how dim are you willing to run it.
The ZD9 is exceptional for VA.
Clouding is worst on Curved models.
Flat panles can look very good actually. But then you will have crushed blacks in the middle and raised gamma around the edges because it's a monitor, you sit close to it and VA have so bad viewing angles. It is called VA gamma cone

What's the closest monitor to this? I bet it's the ASUS PG32UQX (Mini-LED 4K and 144Hz) and even that is $3500 where I live.

Yeah man I get the viewing distance issue, I'm sitting 2.5m from the 65" ZD9 and the blooming is obviously visible at the corners/sides in super challenging scenes/loading screens with a animation in the corner. Must be beyond shit at monitor distance.

The amount of light bleed is a lottery. This is why we need OLED monitors.
exactly.
Out of LCD, I always had the least luck with VA. Silvering, clouding, ghosting and I always had some dead damn pixels on VA.
Good, like really lucky IPS is the monitor KING. Sure, "only 1000:1" contrast but if you get a good panel, it looks clean and contrasty when sitting in the right position.

This was Gigabyte ad27qd - actually the best 144hz ips I've had. Still as you can seen, massive bleeding:
M4VD4O4.jpg

This is my lg 27uk650 I had after 2-3 years of monitor hunting and close to 12 monitors in that time. 144, 240, tn, va, ips... after all, I had landed on 4k60 ips because it had such a good panel. And yes. I bought two of these and returned the worse one. It was still a bit of a lottery. Best IPS I came across. Used it for nearly 2 years. And keep in mind. It looks like that only straight on with 30% brightness (100 nits)

And here is LG oled 48" c1... nuff said.

People complaining about lightbleed on VA monitors seem to be forgetting that this is a FALD panel with over 1000 dimming zones of miniLED backlight. The old Samsung Odyssey G7 mentioned above has 8 zones.

This is how the G7 (8 zones) looks like with a white cross in the center:

Samsung Odyssey G7 S28AG70 Black Uniformity Picture With Local Dimming

And this is how the Neo G9 (2048 zones) looks like:

Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Black Uniformity Picture With Local Dimming

The Neo G8 is bound to look like the Neo G9, as it's using the same MiniLED technology.
There's no light bleed if there are no lights in the back panel turned on.

Screw that super aggressive curve. 1200r or below is way too much, limiting a strictly media consumption monitor already into just certain types of media.
