Sony announces PlayStation VR2 and Sense Controllers at CES

I think vr still needs to be more than 4k in the end, the virtual image is so large it still looks a bit soft vs say watching something in 4k. (Makes sense, if you sit 5ft from a 120" 4k display it won't look as sharp as say a 65" 4k at 5ft). But we just don't have the horsepower yet to run this.

Still would be nice for 2d viewing of non vr content, if you wanted to watch say a 4k movie at virtual 90" at virtual 10ft it would still "look" 4k. Instead it just look 1080p ish now........
HDR will help with the depth

Will this still require a camera to track the headset? Seems fairly ambitious for a console headset, but not over the top. Hope they update the old games to all work well with it.

OF COURSE there are the exceptions with people that love everything VR, but i have 3 headsets sitting around here collecting dust. tried to sell them on fb marketplace, ebay, craigslist. dropped the price down to $50 and still no takers. literally gave a vive cosmos to a friend for free. if this stuff were so immersive and incredible, i'd imagine they'd be a hot commodity (especially in our chip shortage/supply chain times). they're just not. oculus quest 2 is priced and marketed perfectly.
I think you kind of answer your own question here.

P.S.- I'll buy your Quest 2 for $50 and pay for the shipping since nobody wants it.:messenger_winking:

Nice to see the record set straight.

Sad to see the more delusional posters still trying to argue this isn't a confirmation. It's become a bad joke at this point. I've made a report to the mods because this thread is clearly being derailed by people who only want to spread FUD and troll bait the good folks here and not engage with the thread topic discussion in good faith.
i finally just put the thread on ignore yesterday, along with adding a couple more users to my ignore list (no im not afraid to use it, there are more trolls on GAF everyday due to its healthy growth. thankfully mods do a good job tho), its just gotten ridiculous.

pulled it off ignore today just to see where the conversation is and glad to see posts like yours and the one you quoted. the worst part for me is the ones who arent necessarily straight trolls, but are absolutely in here just to poop on psvr 1 and 2 bc they think another headset is superior.

if ive learned anything from this thread, and i genuinely have, its that the headset you want depends on what you want to do with VR and if there is a specific game/experience youre looking for. those of us who dont have PCs have a different set of decisions to make as opposed to those who do. or vice versa, if you have a PC but not a PS4 or PS5.

or perhaps your gaming area just isnt large enough for games where your standing up and moving around (kinda my situation tbh... also i just dont want to stand and play video games often), using motion controllers, etc. its not so black and white, and one fucking wire (they think of it like their trump card, when all other arguments crumble lol) isnt going to deter every single consumer, no matter how badly they think it should, it just isnt the case because there are other variables at play here.

Just don’t understand Sony’s obsesssion with VR, and now they are even acquiring studios for this bs.
The point of diminishing returns on graphics is near. What then sets the Playstation apart from the competition then? Hell, what sets consoles apart from the PCs that are sitting in everyone's homes in 10 years, with integrated cards that can run photoreal visuals? Sony is probably betting that VR will be the differentiator between platforms. There's more room for growth in that sphere, as far as market size and performance. It'll also be a portal into the metaverse, given that FB seems very invested in VR as well.

If streaming games is the future, it also means that Sony is building a large and proprietary VR catalog. So if VR is indeed the future, they'll have a bunch of content already available to bolster their streaming platform.

I really wish I liked VR but I don't. Games arnt too in depth and the ones that are I tend to get motion sickness. There's only a handful of games u can get one with and, I ca t play them for very long.

I did enjoy the quest (and had a go on quest 2).... So this not being wireless is also a bit of a let down for many people I imagine. Its good to know that Sony really is behind VR though and not just some peripheral

Ah that should be more than enough. And supposedly it's just a single cable versus the couple + box from the first iteration?
Yes one single USB-C (that is hopefully detachable/replaceable) from the headset to the console.

PSVR mk2. (what I have) has many more cables:
-HDMI from console to processor box
-power cable to processor box
-camera plugged into console
-2 HDMI cables combined going from processor box to the headset

Edited for clarity.

So processor box to headset will be mostly the same (will be lighter probably), but the rest is eleminated.
PS5 and PSVR2 do not have an external processor box (and one of the two HDMI cables from the old processor box would go to the TV).

Streaming and VR are contradictory futures. Streaming platform can't do VR.

And? PS VR did not work with the PS5....until Sony sent out free camera adapters. Sony could easily include a USB to USB C adapter.

Source?
Look up the specs.
It says PS5.
Also the USB Ports in the PS4 are not even fast enough to send all the data.

So it would need a box to work.

it's the original quest. but i do have rift s and psvr as well. $379 for all of them? ;) will throw in move controllers and the move gun thing (i get all this shit for free)

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
This style is at least equally beautiful (in playability, it could also be that visually if made by a big dev like DCS rather than a solo dev). Naturally not every game is a cockpit game where, even if VR controllers offer really cool interactions, standard (or custom genre) controllers also make sense.

That's why it was big news when MSFS, which already supported VR headsets, also added support for VR controllers. It's not as intuitive as the above game with its made for VR cockpits as real cockpits are much more dense so they use point & click style for bits and bobs but still great.

You can play almost all full VR games seated still, but also get awesome immersion and interactions where you actually, at their most basic, aim and shoot a gun combining the best of lightgun games, if not taking that to the next level in 3D space, with the known intuitive free roaming of FPS.

Speaking of VTOL VR it just got updated with multiplayer mode and the first paid DLC, a sweet looking attack helicopter.
Also, VTOL VR has been updated to v1.3.0, making multiplayer available for all, although the multiplayer mode is still in active development.

In its current state, there are several 6-player cooperative and 12-player PVP missions to play.
VTEditor and Steam Workshop support for multiplayer missions are not quite ready yet, but that will be the very next step. You can expect to see more multiplayer missions pop up in each coming update, until custom missions are fully supported.

Better half a game than 0% of a game. Plus, I'm sure Valve knows how to make a good base game. I doubt the mods are "half the game".
Alyx is great, but mods are pretty awesome, particularly C17YSCAPE.

I realized after I posted that, that consoles never had mods so it's irrelevant for that target audience.

Yep, the folks Sony has engineering their gaming hardware and displays are top tier. They make great displays and know how to get the best from the gaming hardware they build.

So very likely, as happened with PSP, PS Vita, PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5 or PSVR, PlayStation VR2 will look and perform way better than the raw specs lead us to think. It's difficult to find people with more knowledge, talent and experience than them.

Obviously won't be perfect, but as usual with PSVR2 they will solve not only widely known issues, but also some issues only a few ones -or almost nobody else- noticed.

In fact considering how covid delayed the development of games and constrained the production and shipment of chips and consoles, I think they may be thinking on a 2023 PSVR2 release.

We basically got the name, the controller, its raw specs and what seems to be a short in-engine cutscene of the first announced game, which makes me think they we're pretty far from the release. They may wait for multiple future big events -one of them I assume being E3- to announce the price, release date, appearance of the headset and to announce and show several lunch window games.

If we're lucky we'll get it at the end of this year, but I think it's more likely that we'll get it during 2023.
I think there's no way we don't get it this year.

Did anyone here get the chance to try out this demo years ago?

Would eye tracked aiming be a viable alternative to stick aiming?

I think it will be PS5 only too but it can still be PS4 compatible because PS4 games wouldn't be sending data requiring USB-C speeds. All it might need is a wire adapter depending where it is doing some of the processing for inside out tracking.

No, you are forgetting about audio processing :). It also needs an adapter with enough processing power (and pretty efficient too if you do not need a separate power supply too) to split HDMI signals and most importantly process 3D Audio which is currently done by dedicated silicon in the PSVR1 breakout box.

I wonder if the resolution per eye they're going for will make it a substantially better experience. The PSVR was just too low rez for my taste, the tech was not there and not sure it is now.

I'm hoping all games will be playable bare minimum on a big virtual screen environment within the headset. That becomes a good selling point because it can also be marketed as a tv and be adopted at a higher rate. You could take your ps5 and put it anywhere where there is a power outlet and just plug your headset into the usb-c port.
The original PSVR could do that, couldn't it? So expect nothing less then. Although I have the PSVR, them never providing a breakout box that passed through HDMI 2.0 for owners of the original headset put me off from using it.

Even as someone who has never owned a Playstation, this is an appealing headset. Hell, if it could reliably be made to work with a PC I'd be 100% in.

these right here, the downplay is embarrassing at this point. these specs are much better than anyone thought.
eye tracking is a game-changer. hands down
Yup, and to add weight to my comment, I’m a filthy green rat and have never owned a PlayStation.

I played the Rift S a fair bit on PC though and I thought it was excellent. PSVR 2 is on another level though. I’m a big fan of VR and this is going to help push it further.

I never owned the original psvr and my ps4 slim broke a slightly over a year after owning it. I didn't bother to pay to get it fixed.

I’m hoping it’s very successful and then a year or so later they launch a wireless model with wigig 2.

I understand not wanting to do wireless at launch. You would need to add a battery to the headset and then a wigig 2 box would have to be plugged into that usb c port. It would cost extra money and that changes the ergonomics of the headset.

If this is very successful though they could develop a wireless only model equipped and designed around the battery for comfort. Wigig 2 has support for 4 streams at 44 gbps and solved issues with occlusion.

almost makes me want to wait and see if they do release a wireless version. i likely wont be buying any big video game related purchases for the foreseeable future (for many reasons, availability among them but not the only one), so it might work out that way anyway.

I'm buying a lot of VR games on PC recently.

I fear for my wallet when this hits as I will want to play all the exclusives.

Sony did very well with the first PSVR and I have faith in them delivering again.
