Pokémon Legends: Arceus - Gameplay Overview Trailer

Game looks improved visually but people will still say it looks like a PS2 game.

People wanted a much bigger World than S&S, well it will take a visual hit to get there especially as TPC usually want 720p native on handheld and 1080p native on docked mode. Switch is what it is hardware wise.

The gameplay looks much more interesting to me as someone who’s started and quickly dropped a few of the main line games on 3DS and Switch.

...

Yeah well while watching the trailer, it actually gave me some PS2 game vibes, but not strictly because of the graphics quality, but rather those odd size differences between near and far objects with lack of details in the midfield which was very typical for early 3D open-world games.

Is there a hard mode? Pokemon is like SMT for babies. If it was as brutally difficult as SMT I might consider it. Otherwise I'll leave this to the children.

It's not even the PS2 graphics, it's the horrible visual style and world. It literally looks like a free environment from the Unity store, with some Pokemon in it

you can get this on the Unity store:

For free.

I guess all you guys care about is graphics. Literally.

When a $60 first party game from the biggest media franchise in the world (that's guaranteed to sell 10+ million units) looks this bad, it's hard not to focus on it .

And it's not like the rest of the game looks amazing. It's more pokemon, except in an ugly and barren open world.

I mean it looks like Pokémon. Idk what you guys expected. I get that with the money they make it should be better. It isn't going to be though. This is what they make.

I even more impressed that they coudln't even do water properly. It looks like a gel or something lol

Battle looks weird...is this supposed to be a battle between mons or you gonna keep dodging rolling like a retard everytime someone targets you?

Also reused battle animations, who would guess.

It’s not the budget that’s the issue with regards to the visuals it’s more the developers experience. They’ve only ever made top down games on a 5flop GPU before Sword and Shield. They’ll get better with experience.

People often forget Switch is a beyond awful phone CPU and sub 200gflop GPU with 2GB of extremely slow RAM. It’s mobile tech from 2015. Pokemon company target 720p and 1080p native so lod, shadow res, textures etc take a hit. The framerate looks solid in this video when a lot of the so called “impossible ports” can drop to 20fps.

I don’t mind the graphics but I still don’t feel like I know exactly what the game is. I do love the new fighting/catching mechanics though. There are no trainer battles and no online functionality right? That’s rough…what am I catching the pokemon for?

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!

I love how they chose to focus on this lady sweeping dirt outside on a grassy dirt path for the trailer. This is fine.
BOTW has at least one of those. Probably more but the first made an impression. I noticed because the rest of the game is so good with such attention to detail it was weird they missed that. I quickly forgot about it while playing anyway.

Exactly this.
Some people seem shocked when other people say this looks like ps2, but to me it's even far "worse" than ps2, because ps2 era games can still look nice once rendered in HD, but this here... It lacks any kind of art direction, it just seems like amateur work on unity from someone who just started learning it.

We can take this for example, it's PS2 and open world too, and still looks much, much better than whatever Arceus is:

I think people forgot what PS2 actually looked like.
And art direction does everything.

They made this game

Proving they're are purposely gimping the visuals in pokemon games.
If they needed help they could always hire more staff or get resources from Nintendo as they've moved into the same Kyoto building with them.

The visuals of this game just comes of as messy. Looks awful.

Hopefully the game itself is at least decent and brings some fresh concepts. Would be nice if Pokémon started going more towards an open world style.

Trees standing right next to each other are literally copy pasted. It's shocking how bad this game looks. It being on the switch is not an excuse, there are several open world games that have come out that are far more complex than this game that look much better.

Saying its a PS2 game is justified and it's probably being nice to it.

What's this game even about? Walking and dodging pokemon simulator?
It's still unclear to me what this game is supposed to be. From the looks of it, it appears to be a little bit similar to Monster hunter in the sense that there is a central hub where you get your task and then you set out to a limited amount of areas to fufill the task.

Pokemon fans don't care about quality.

They will see open world Pokemon and

25 million in sales
It's not even open world though. From my understanding it's supposed to work more or less like Monster Hunter, you go to a map and stay there for a while doing whatever until you go back to base, then go to a different map.

Cancelled my pre-order on this. No point spending £45 when Game Freak have been getting progressively worse, to the point now where their games aren’t enjoyable, IMO. Last good games were all on the DS, with Alpha Sapphire being passable and Y/X being OK. Sun and Sword I have not been able to force myself to complete despite numerous attempts. Best Pokémon games are all on GB/GBA/DS.

In a year slated to feature Elden Ring, Horizon FW, God of War, BOTW2 and Splatoon 3 I’ll just save my money.

On the plus side, this looks significantly better than the first teaser, but it's still pretty underwhelming visually. As for gameplay, it's hard to say without going hands-on, but it looks pretty uninspired from this trailer.

The combat was always going to be an issue moving to real-time. If you take away all the complexity (what complexity there was anyway) of the turn-based, rock-paper-scissors battles, what do you have left? And which audience and skill level do you aim for? Honestly, the combat they've gone with looks like all the worst parts of Monster Hunter and Pokemon Go jammed together, with few of their good qualities. Partner Pokemon seem reduced to combat specials while most of the time the main character dodges around delivering weak ranged attacks. Maybe the dodge will keep things interesting, but my hopes aren't high.

I appreciate the ambition of their fresh take, and I'm not making any final judgements yet, but thus far the execution seems poor on every front.

Looks good enough to me. It's a step in the direction I wanted Pokémon to go for a long time, so I'll check it out.

Comments about the art style and technical shortcomics really do surprise me, because this literally looks like Breath of the Wild. Like the same exact engine. And that game was met with glowing praise.

So it's essentially Monster Hunter Rise with the combat replaced by a weird cross between Let's go Pikachu and regular battles...

Yeah il wait to see if Argos drop the price in a few years to get rid of stock.
