Dark Tales: From the Lost Soul - and other "oddball" PS1 games

I miss the PS1 / Saturn era of gaming...because developers were still getting their brains wrapped around 3D game development and some of that weird 16 bit "lets do something odd" sensibility leaked into the PS1 era of game development. Sure you got iconic games like Resident Evil...but you also got games like Dark Tale: From the Lost Soul, a first person survival horror game from Sammy that is equal parts totally weird and super unique and intriguing.

It's basically RE in first person decades before RE would get there with some survival horror elements mixed in with old DOS point and click puzzles. Odd combo but damn if it doesn't work.

But the PS1 era was filled with these types of games that seemed to hang their hat on the weirder aspects of story while also delivering a unique and ultimately fun gaming experience. Sadly so many of them have faded into complete obscurity...but they def shouldn't have

but I am curious what others oddball games from that era are? There are so many...not all worth playing but a solid amount that are

Should be noted that Racing Lagoon, Robot Control Dandy, and Mizzurna Falls have English patches, Moon has an English patch and port to Switch/PS4, and PSX Baroque has a Spanish patch.

Not really too obscure but I really enjoyed Eternal Eyes.
If I remember correctly it was kind of like a monster capture + FF tactics game. Though I couldn't tell you about the story or anything it just seems like a game no one but me remembers lol.

My heart is always holding hands with Kenji Eno’s work. Really adult and dark games. He never passed his torch so he’s dearly missed:

For clarification, this was originally released on PC and it a western game (under the name The Neverhood), not japanese.

Its playstation version was for some reason just exclusivley released in japan. But on the same metric, that also applies to a Beavis & Butthead game.

I mean it applies as per the thread since its specifically about ps1 games, but I just thought that mention needed clarification.

One of my favorite Fromsoftware game from 6th gen was Yoshitsune Eiyūden, it had killer Japanese style soundtrack, the game play is mixed with Action and Tactical element where you could command your squad with perma-death. The game had some of the Nioh vibe to it.

I knows its not 5th gen, but still
