Xbox Series X|S Reaches 12 Million Shipped, Analyst Says

The Xbox Series X|S family of consoles have combined to ship more than 12 million units, according to estimates from Daniel Ahmad, who works for the research company Niko Partners.

This would be up significantly from the 8 million Series X|S consoles that were reported to have been shipped by the end of October 2021. Ahmad said the "dual SKU strategy" for releasing multiple consoles under the same Xbox banner ended up being a smart move for the company.

The reasoning is that, the increased production of the S model relative to the X, helped keep new Xbox consoles in supply in recent months amid the ongoing supply chain issues and semiconductor shortages.

Ahmad shared the estimate in response to Phil Spencer's recent announcement that the Xbox Series X|S is the best-selling Xbox platform of all time over its first year.

Microsoft no longer announces official sales numbers for its Xbox consoles, instead opting to discuss figures related to "engagement" and other metrics. Sony, on the other hand, provides updated PlayStation 5 sales figures every three months as part of its regular earnings releases. The PS5 had shipped 13.4 million units by the end of September 2021, a figure that has no doubt grown higher since.

I think the Series S helps boost the sales, believed we have a thread on Series S sales last month?
I mean its right in the tweet in the OP.

"The dual SKU strategy has paid off for Microsoft amid the the supply chain issues / semiconductor shortage

Increased production of S allowed for more Xboxes on shelves than if they only had X."

An Xbox sold is an Xbox sold regardless, doesn't matter if it's an S or X

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

Where did I deny that?

At the start of this gen I thought it would end up a ratio of 3:1 for ps5 versus x/s sold. It looks like it will be less. I still think it will finish 2:1 at end of gen. Yea this makes sense due to the number of customers still to transition from last gen.
In saying that, this could still be a far better generation for Xbox in terms of consoles sold. Similar to the 360 gen.

I wouldn't call it neck and neck. If Series is at 12m, PS5 should be at 17m, maybe pushing 18m.
13.4 or 13.5 as of the end of September.
CY Q4 last year was 4.5 so if they hit that, it's 18m.

I personally think it's a small decline so I would say 17.5m when sony announce in 3 weeks.

Sony will still win this gen in terms of consoles sold that’s never in doubt but I see Microsoft closing the gap by a big margin. They havent had the misstep in marketing like the Xbox one had at the beginning. Even my super Sony mate now has an Xbox series x because he was given game pass for free with his broadband contract, he was gonna use x cloud but decided that in order to play the games properly he needed a series x.

Because its much easier for them to produce it. The wafer they have is low, compared to playstation. Also the components are cheap to get, compared to xsx.

People laughed at XSS, and said, it wont sell. its sitting at storages, guess what people. It gave MS 12m sales. People like 300$ cheap console, and dont care about graphics.

Why would anyone think that, when the difference was not that great between the PS4 and the One over the first year or so? This inclination to paint MS, the second most valuable company on earth, which is on its fourth generation of consoles, as some kind of underdog, is truly incomprehensible.

Maybe not but they are behind and will continue to be behind but that's not really an issue for Microsoft as it is for Sony. Sony have all their balls in one court, Microsoft have many balls in many court's, I'm not sure if this is a good analogy but there it is.
MS xcloud back up plan, will benefit greatly, when a next gen console is announced. not right now though. Maybe for next gen games, through xcloud.

Let's not rewrite history. The Xbox One was a catastrophe, and they got dominated. They were absolutely an underdog up until E3 2021. That's the first time they started to truly reverse damage to their reputation.

Just because they're a large company, doesn't mean they weren't an underdog in gaming at the time. Google is obviously an underdog with Stadia, despite being a huge company.

I still think XSX will sell more by the end of the gen, assuming the chip shortages end at some point, but yeah XSS was always going to sell. Plenty of parents buying them for their kids, people on a budget, people buying it as a Gamepass machine, or companion console to whatever console they already have, people still stuck on 1080p tv's with no intention of upgrading to 4k anytime soon etc.

it wont really. XSS is the switch of xbox. That 200$ price is the difference. and as for these storages, the sd card will cheap in 1-2 years after that.

Parents are the big reason why xss will sell more.

edit: we have the same point.

Google has nowhere near the experience MS has accumulated. They have published games for decades, and launched their first console 20 years ago. That Xbox One actually sold more than 50 million consoles. It had the weakest first party line up that I can remember, honestly, some of the worst messaging, initially, and invariably the worst version of every third party title...and yet, it sold better than the N64 and GC did, and ended up having surprisingly close sales figures to the PS4 in the US and UK. Closer than I would have anticipated given the elements that I mentioned. Clearly, the brand is really, really powerful in both those countries, and has been since the days of thd first XBox. In fact, I would venture to say that that Xbox would sell just as well, if not better than the PS, if both machines had an identical line-up over there. Not in mainland Europe or Asia, evidently, but definitely in the English speaking countries.

It was practically 2:1 after the first year with PS4 and Xbox one

And Microsoft go into this generation in a distant 3rd place. So yes, by definition they are underdogs.

Even without factoring in PS, it just bodes well for Xbox.

I think console sales typically peak at around the year 3/4/5 mark when they start hitting their stride and releasing big games.

If they are at 12m now I think they should definitely hit 70-80m after 7 years.

I think Series could realistically beat 360 numbers, and that's with Microsoft going all-in on PC and xCloud.

I really think it’s going to as well

What was the gap between the PS3/360 in the UK and then the gap between the PS4/One.

And what was the gap between thePS3/360 in the US and the gap between the PS4/One in the US.

PS5 sold more then double that of XSX or XSS depends which sold more.
Not so sure where Sony's figures are coming from, they claim it's ahead of the Ps4 in the same timeframe despite being supply constrained, just does not add up. ;)

I doubt it, if it's 1,5:1 at this point, i'd say it won't end up being higher than that.

Each year should get better for MS since their acquisitions will take time to start rolling, they had basically nothing for launch, then the first year was just good with a couple of hits, but also they had two of the game of the years, one launching exclusively for PS5 and another being multi.

Next year it'll get slighty better even tho they'll launch another temp exclusive game for PS5, but they'll also have the biggest Xbox exclusive game since Halo 3.. actually bigger, and then 2023 should be the year where their 2018-2019 acquisitions start launching Xbox exclusive content

you have to divide X|S sales by two so 12 million / 2 = 6 million for xsx or xss depends which sold more sony sold 13.4 million PS5
The PS5 has sold 13.4 million units, according to a new earnings report. Via a new Sony financial report, the PS5 has sold 13.4 million units since its launch
13.4 PS5 divided by 6 million xsx or xss is 2.23 times more then xsx or xss consoles.
