Should I continue with God of War (2018)?

I recently got a PlayStation to play the exclusives for this gen and last gen. I'm up to God of War (2018). I got to the part just past the giant snake in the lake. I killed an ogre type thing and some mooks, I think I am at the Base of the Mountain area. This game has 94% on Metacritic, I want to like it. The sequel is coming this year (probably). So is there reason to continue with the game when I am not enjoying it that much? Does something compelling happen or the combat improve? Thanks. Some recent games I did and did not enjoy:

Liked:
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- The Last of Us Remastered + DLC
- Ratchet & Clank (2016)
- Uncharted 4

Did not like:
- inFamous Second Son
- MediEvil

You're experience is me with BotW. I should love it but I simply can't get into it. You've given it an honest try, maybe by chance the new one will shake it up a bit to keep you interested and get it's hooks in you. You can always just watch a story recap for this one if that's the case.

You barely started. You will kill another 500 trolls lol.
It's worth playing and finishing for sure.
Based on the games you liked, it should be fine

You do get a new weapon at some point that I liked significantly more than the axe. But I don’t see that either making or breaking anyone’s enjoyment of the game. If anything I liked the game a lot to begin with but it really goes on for too long.

I really liked the game (I still prefer GoW 1, 2, 3)... but it's a game, if it does not entertain you there is no reason to force yourself into finishing it. I would go as far as saying that you have seen most bosses after you saw the first one since they all are reskinned versions of the same big guy that you fight in different places, this is the main weakness of this game, it has no extreme over the top moment compared to the old ones.

If you don't enjoy playing, why on earth would you want to continue?

I dropped GoW pretty early on too, I can appreciate its artistical merits but I found the gameplay beyond tiresome. I'm not gonna waste my time doing something I don't enjoy just because a lot of other people say it is a great game.

Life is too short for dumb shit like that.

I mean what's not to like? Seriously. It plays extremely smooth (on PS5), it looks fantastic, it has an excellent narrative, the combat is very fluid and brutal, the pacing is good, the environments are varied, the audio is very good, the acting is top notch. One of the best games ever made.

No stop playing it

I agree with the other guy. Shit take bro. I hate it when a series tries something new and people say things like this. 'I hate things that are diffffururnt.....duujrrrrr...'
Not everybody has to love changes. There are people that hate Yakuza 7 and loved the old ones. I love Yakuza 7 and hated the old ones and i loved the old God of Wars and don't like the new one.

I strongly recommend you to pushthrough the game a bit further, OP. Perhaps, after the first two realms.

If you're still not liking it then better move on to another game. For me, the game was the real gem of the last gen. In my top 3 of PS4 games.

This overview is very good at helping to understand some of the criticisms;

Personally for me the old formula had gone stale (after platting all of the old GoW games aside from Ascension). The new formula was a breath of fresh air.

I would say though that the praise is overblown in my opinion. Writing/narrative wise I would give the game an 8/10, same for combat (magnetism lock on does my head in) - however the 10/10 visuals and rather good side quests (like hunting the harpies) elevate the game to a 9 overall for me. If people aren’t bothered by graphics or side quests I can definitely see why they’d find the hype overblown.

That's pretty much how I felt. My expectations were surpassed but I still don't think it's a masterpiece.

That said, OP you're less than 10% of the way into the game. Maybe give it a few more hours and see if it clicks.

what kind of utter nonsense is this where you ask OTHER people if YOU should continue a game YOU DON`T ENJOY?

If you're not feeling it by the lake id give up tbh or simply stick it on easy mode and breeze through it to enjoy those fucking amazing visuals cause man some of the levels looked incredible, i ended up feeling something similar to you but really enjoyed the levels and visual design so stuck it on easy and breezed through the combat but took my time to admire the incredible art, which is why for Ragnarok i'll be holding off until a sale, i still wanna play it and see more of that art/level design but i aint paying full price for it, maybe its just me but i loved the original GOW's, i loved the simplicity of them the new one was for this old brain so fucking complicated with soooo many moves, skillsets, armours etc i just couldnt get my head wrapped around it all.. i just wanted to kill shit and look at nice GFX

40 minutes lol.

Yeah no I get why people don't like certain critically acclaimed games like RDR2 (slow gameplay, no player agency, long animations, linear missions), but I objectively can't think of something negative about GoW, unless you're absolutely not into the fantasy/norse mythology setting and you are annoyed by the kid or something. It's an absolute milestone masterpiece with it's one-shot camera. Took me like 75 hours to finish without playing a single other game in between. That rarely happens to me and I am someone that gets bored with most games after like 30-40 hours.

It's one of the absolute best games of last generation but that doesn't mean you should force yourself to play it if it's not gelling with you. That's me with RDR2, although I do want to give it a second chance

How about "I just wasn't enjoying it"? I feel exactly the same way about it as the OP - it just wasn't doing it for me, and I got to the point where I realized I had no desire to play it anymore. I had the same feeling about Uncharted 4 - another series I used to enjoy, but for which the latest game just ended up leaving me strangely cold. Note that I'm not claiming that either of these titles are objectively bad games, just ones that I got to the point where I couldn't be bothered to carry on playing them, despite neither of them having anything I could point to and say "I hate this".

You want to like it? You either do or don’t and continuing is your choice

i personally didn’t gel with the game, it looked stunning don’t get me wrong but it just didn’t work for me but I can see why others loved it

The game doesnt open up until after you reach the lake. Thats when you start learning earning XP from doing missions to learn new moves and build combos. Stick to the main storyline for now. The game will get much better once you meet new people, and then it wont just be your son to accompany you on your journey. Go back to the sidequest after you reach to the top of the moutain.
