God of War (PC) - Review Thread

It's like all the PC bros are surprised the game is actually good. Like all PlayStation gamers only liked it because it was a PlayStation exclusive. No, it is in fact a very good game. Enjoy!
PC bro here. Played it on the ps4 back then and didn't like the game very much. Now that the PC version is out, i still don't like it. No plans to double dip.

It's a PS4 game, not a PS5 game. The 100 Mb PS5 patch basically only unlocks framerate on PS4 version... We won't know what PS5 could do here, but it was developed exclusively for PlayStation so they could be probably improve it a lot on PS5...

It's a very good looking 2018 game, it's still looking very good, but it's a 2018 game. We obviously have games looking better on PS5 now like Demon's Souls remake or Ratchet, so there's no reason GoW couldn't look better on PS5 than the PS4 version it runs now. That's why I laughed at "The PS5 is not strong enough to offer those upgrades."

Of course a 2022 PC version can look a bit better than a 2018 PS4 version of the same game. The opposite would be a shameful port.
You are missing the point here, im not saying the PS5 can't produce better looking games than GOW on pc. All im saying is that this game is heavy and can't even run locked 4K60 max settings on a RTX 3080 ( a gpu thats roughly x2 the PS5 performance). Even if they optimised it for the PS5, same optimization could apply to the pc version as well and no way a PS5 can go toe to toe with a RTX 3080 doesn't mather how much you optimize it. That would be straight out bad pc port and would get hammered like CP2077.

what upgrades?
It is a tiny bit sharper and there are more shadows.
... I was hoping for more since pc should offer more.

It looks better and refined. But it's not like 360 vs pc games where textures appear out of the mud.
It is a slight upgrade.

btw - 3080 dropping below 60fps at 4k without DLSS? I was not expecting that
More shadows is actually a pretty big deal. Anything that is upgraded with the lighting/shading will always be a big deal. Resolution and FPS would be minor IMO. - as it's just brute forcing the rendering approximation to a higher order.

The simple fact that shadow maps couldn't be rendered on last gen hardware tells us how much they could have gone with a more powerful SKU. Rendering shadows is not minor at all. It's one of the most expensive features in rendering.

You are missing the point. The PS5 doesn't have enough GPU power to brute force the game at 4k resolution with all the backbuffers being raised as well. While it's a PS4 game, it still holds up to most games today. Demon Souls and Ratchet don't look a generation ahead of GoW at all. Going by your pro-PS5 logic, you should frown on GoW2, Spiderman Miles, and HFW since they are cross-gen games (i.e. PS4 games at the core).

Yea, he's got the silly notion that a PS5 game will outperform a PS4 game on PC... it never will.

Did Siliconera get dropped on the head?
Wtf it's even stupider than I thought

Overall, God of War feels like a game made with a specific audience in mind, and I don’t fall into its parameters.

What the heck lol... Flight sim 2020 is one of the most boring games I've played but it's still an amazing flight simulator, I wouldn't give it a 4/10 just because it's not catered towards me.

What's so hard to understand? The game was built ground up to take advantage of the PS4 hardware. It's heavy on PC because it's a port. It was never built ground up for PC hardware. That's why it's so heavy. The PS5 could easily do this if the game is built ground up for the PS5.

Again I have a small gripe with options.
Seems like another game with original, high, higher, ultra, ultra max settings. For many visual effects.
Adjustability is great and a key on the pc but I would like to see adjustable settings ONLY when there is visual difference from click to click.
If there is a setting, I change it from medium to high and there is absolutely no visible difference even found by digital foundry... but it gives you 1fps more? why is that even there. Make the damn setting with 1fps more the only one and eliminate the other.
More effective settings.

Just watched some ultrawide gameplay and it seemed incredibly claustrophobic.

I'll wait to see if the FOV can be changed via the game's files, or a wait for a community fix. On the other hand, playing it as it wasn’t intended also kind of bothers me.

Always seems to be something with console ports on PC.

So Where's your evidence to prove this theory? What game have you got that was built ground up for the PS5 and which is a PS4 game for PC?
I believe the post ment if the ps5 and the pc were running a ps4 port. Like the game this thread is about.

On another note, Sony seem to have done some good work here. It's a little unfortunate that taking extra time to do the right thing is probably gonna cost them some full price release sales with people pushing GoW to later in favour of MH Rise.

Doubt it matters, horizon zero dawn is selling every single steam sales still very well. This game will sell for years to come.

God of war uses checkerboard rendering on PS5. Run it at full fat 4k and see what happens. It's a demanding game across the board.
There is a reason the game has a 30 FOV...

I would love Sony to port the old games to PC. Played the first 2 on a PS2 with component cables and they still look good.
4k 60 gow3 and ascension would be a blast. The less we have to rely on RPCS3 and pscx2 the better.

Common logic.

3080 is a metric ton faster then the GPU in the PS5. it will never outperform it. And on top of that, PC hardware keeps evolving every year.
That wasn't what VFX victim said though.
It's obvious a card costing the same as a PS5 will be far more powerful or one that costs nearly double. You still haven't provided the evidence of a game built ground up for PS5 that also has a PS4 port for PC to prove that theory? Consoles punch far above their weight. This port of GOW proves how demanding it is on PC hardware even though its a 2018 game.

Can't wait to double dip into this on PC. Loved it the first time around.

Off Topic but does anyone know when we are supposed to get PC Info for the Uncharted PC games coming out on the 28th?

I can't find anything... I assume they want to wait until after GoW releases.

So will a GTX 1060 run it at 4K 60fps?
No, but neither can the PS5, or at least last time I checked it used checkerboarding.

My point is, if you think a game has to run at native 4K/60fps to not be considered demanding, then I guess almost every game is.

are in a big trouble
My godlike pc awaits to play this game. Played it on the ps4 so can't wait to try it out on the PC

Exactly. The two times checkerboard rendering were compared by DF. Detroit Become Human and Death Stranding it produced image quality results similar to 3200 x 1800 native. 69% the pixels of 4K.

Not sure I follow.
PS5 is 400usd. 3080 (double of ps5 as you say) is 700usd. Of course 400 nowadays grants you maybe 1060 :p
Depends where you live too. In Canada, a 3080 is three times the price of a PS5 in big city computer shops.

does a ps4 run it at 4k 60fps?
What's the PS4 got to do with it? Is that the hill you want to die on? The whole point of playing on PC is to play it at it's MAX settings. So why would I play a game on PC if your best response is "does the PS4 run it at 4k 60fps?"
Are you seriously stupid enough to compare a PS4 to a PC GPU performance wise?
So what does it take to run this at PS5 settings?
