Your game plan as Sony executive to counterattack Microsoft's latest strategy

  • Get rid of Jimbo
  • Stop the PC porting business
  • Secure either EA (massive IP catalogue) or Take2 (Rockstar's portfolio)
If everything fails, start to plan a transition for SCE from hardware and services to just game development and publishing, following the succesful Sony movies' business model.
Just buy konami for IPs and square
CoD alone is bigger than those two put together. Going after them is not an answer, is a sign of submission, really.

It is easy and simple and they can do, but they won't because Jim Ryan and PS border are really stupid and out of touch with game market right now.

Buy Bungie, Remedy, Emberlabs, KojiPro
Buy kadokawa and get from
Buy rights or a deal to explore on the next XX years on Konami IPS(Metal Gear, Castlevania and Silent Hill), get PES team and IP

Buy Square and Capcom and get a deal with Japan gov keeping games on Nintendo devices and PC.

All this you can do with less than 20 billion(they have 45) would block xbox on Asia and Europe and would guarantee their survive as a platform on the long term.
No way in hell they could buy all this for 20 billion...specially if all those companies you mention aren't looking for buyers. Sony would have to pay way above their value.

Form a PlayStation Militia with Bryank at the helm and take the fight to Phil
Useless, Phil is just too strong. Look what he did to Jim:

The only thing PlayStation needs is a F2P multiplayer banger, like Apex Legends, Fortnite or Warzone. I think both Deviation Games and Firewalk Studios are on that mission.
people understand those games are what they are because are multiplatform (or at least on PC)?

Sony isn't just Playstation. They can't spend half their money on studios.

Maybe just Bungie and Kadokawa.

Do nothing.

Why do people think getting involved in some acquisition arms race with Microsoft will end well for them?

The news has really brought the inner drama queens out of people. They seem to believe that if Xbox pulls ahead of Sony's gaming division in profits that Playstation is doomed and dead.

They could never make another acquisition again and still be a profitable business.

Capcom is an interesting company. Clearly they're extremely focused on remaining independent. They're basically the only Japanese publisher left besides Konami that hasn't merged.

Which they won't, even with exclusive CoD. Europe isn't going to start buying Xboxes, they'll just move on from CoD.

They need to continue to diversify their portfolio and offer AAA game experiences in more genres than 3rd person cinematic games. Yes, I know they have a ton of games out there, but they are nowhere near where they were when they were fighting the MS warchest back in the early 360 days.

They need to invest in their own IPs ASAP:
- Resistence
- Killzone
- Socom
- Syphon Filter
- Wild Arms
- Motorstorm
- MAG
- Warhawk
- Alundra
- Legend of Dragoon

Also, start working on a AAA twitch military shooter like CoD (not "sci-fi" shooter)

My strategy would be to buy lots of smaller competent studios on the cheap and use them to develop new and existing first party IPs.
That's probably what they're doing now.

Just buy konami for IPs and square
If Sony ever was in the process of buying either? They would go to MS, Amazon, Tencent & Facebook, anyone that might be able to offer a better deal. They have to do it, otherwise investors will drag them to court and win. Their job is to maximize shareholder value.

My plan would be to continue to build new IPs like Horizon, Ghost etc, and not worry about a competitor who is struggling in the market buying up existing ones to gain market share. Only make defensive purchases where you rely on that partner almost like a first party. They can't win a bidding war but they can still create amazing games that attract people to the platform.

I honestly believe as time goes on we're gonna look at this and say Microsoft did the right thing by keeping gaming a hobby for us all. With the threat of Amazon, Facebook, and Google buying these gaming publishers it's best.

Well if they want to keep their game business on long term they need to do that... Playstation is 30% of their revenue.

Xbox represents less than 5% of Microsoft revenue and they spent 60% of their cash only on AB.

Get from software and make their games fully exclusive to playstation. That would cause quite a stir. Nothing is off the table anymore. I don't expect we will have many multiplatform games left by the end of the gen and Microsoft won't be left alone to gobble them all up. Especially Japanese publishers.

They will pull ahead in annual profit if they keep making acquisitions like they are, it's inevitable - but people will be quick to forget that these acquisitions are still going to take years to actually make them their money back. It's still a smart business move, just a very long term one.

It doesn't have to be an arms race. They just need enough select IPs to keep their competitive advantage. If MS is buying out the market and making games exclusive Sony has no choice but to start buying IPs they want to have on their console. Sony has to adjust their strategy or they will be in trouble.

I don't really care about most of the Activision IPs, though I understand the importance of games like CoD and Warcraft. I feel like they should do what they always do: grow studios internally and make great games that way. It feels like most of the companies that they aquire we're basically Sony partners to begin with, or had a long history with Sony.

This news, while insane for a number of reasons, didn't make me question my love for Sony lol. I buy every system for the exclusives they provide, and Sony is king in that regard.

Sony cant afford EA or Take-Two.
And both come with a shit ton of contractual obligations.

Legit if R* was still independent it would make sense for Sony to blow its whole gaming war chest on securing that.
But of the big guys left.
Sony cant really jump on EA or Take-Two.

Ill bookmark my own post just in case Sony really opens up the Warchest to the gaming division and lets them buy either of these two.

Will be a really funny situation to see Playstation games on Gamepass.
Cuz EA and MS have a long contract for EA Play on Gamepass.

Sony need to get their arse in gear. Expand their existing studios is priority no 1.
Get a few great FPS games like Cod and Halo onto the platform. They are covered by contractual agreement till 2023 with CoD. GG games are making a fps. Make sure It's good and ready for late 2023 or early 2024.
They can put a team together to make a Socom game. Also approach any of Epic, EA or Ubisoft to provide one.
Buy big and aquire Square Enix, Capcom and FromSoftware.

1- Kadokawa (no brainer)

2- Purchase Konami gaming IPs, no need to outright buy the company, that would be moronic.

3- Kojima Productions and give him back his toys :)

4- Square Enix to have an rpg powerhouse

5- Create a few more studios with the available talent and people who will surely be leaving Activision, Bethesda, etc.

6- Let's get a handheld going, too much money on the table. With Steam Deck we now have a viable mobile x86 platform, no more having to create games only for 1 ecosystem.

WBD is not getting rid of Warner Bros Interactive....and Sony couldnt afford them anyway.
WBIE's worth is north of 4.5B, so of course Sony could afford to buy them. And by the way, the only reason why WBIE is not on sale at the moment is because of the ongoing merger with Discovery, but once the deal goes through they'll most likely get rid of the entire thing.

Just expand their current studios even faster and maybe make 1 or 2 large strategic purchases. It doesn't even need to be Bethesda big but something that will wow and get folks interested in buying your console. They could never outspend Microsoft so what they need to do is be more strategic. Buying a Japanese company would be a good move since I doubt Japan would allow Microsoft to buy any large gaming companies. It would be hilarious if Sony bought Sega:LOL:.

I am Become Bilbo Baggins
I'd just buy (assuming it's possible) Capcom and/or Square. I'd also open a new studio in the west and one in Japan.

That would equal the playing field.

I should add that as a consumer, I'm not a fan of all third party publishers being gobbled up by Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, but how else can you combat Microsoft's relentless approach?

Make a competetive military FPS to rival the 20 years old, 400 million copies selling tiny video game series called Call of Duty.

That'll show them. Easy as that.

I don't think there's any magic formula. If COD goes exclusive they're going to lose quite a lot of market share and annual profit and there's really no way to avoid that.

Buying a publisher or a shitload of studios would just compound the loss. Even if they went for something like GTA which could potentially regain some market share, Microsoft are just likely to outbid them. Anyone that would make a difference, MS will outbid them. Anything that wouldn't make a difference (Capcom, Square, Konami etc) is just a waste of money.

As I see it they've got 2 key strengths (beyond the brand):
1. Excellent IP
2. Excellent first party developers

They need to leverage the first properly. Why am I still waiting to see if they'll even continue the Uncharted series?? That's crazy to me. That's a huge series, and it's hardly Citizen Kane: you should really just be able to pump those out. There must be at least half a dozen franchises like that that they just need to commodify.

They need to increase development capacity then, mainly aimed at not wasting IP. Use Naughty Dog and the like to create new IP, but have a suite of 7 or 8 backup studios just churning out quality sequels.

If they do that, they'll always have a market. There's nothing stopping them producing these multiplayer titles at the same time and hoping something catches fire: you never know.

Then in the longer term they need to make sure they're well placed to become a platform holder in the streaming future, but I know less about that. I mean if they don't have some kind of infrastructure in place they're destined to become just a publisher ANYWAY, regardless of what happens in the next few years.

Please....don't. Just stop all this nonsense and go out and meet people or something. It's just games, it shouldn't be that important.
Lol it's just for entertainment mate, nothing wrong with some random speculation. Have fun and don't worry what other people find fun doing. Like you said it's not at all serious, so why take it so seriously. Cheers mate!
