Monster Hunter Rise (PC Version) |OT| A New Fantastic Point of View

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I found a video that does a decent job introducing Rise's differences to World players without spoiling too much content, areas, monsters, movesets and stuff or everything there's to discover (though I've not yet been to that area, it looks a lot like Tri's Flooded Forest, sadly minus the swimming).

Edit: so it is Flooded Forest, man I loved Tri so much and there's more homages to it and some 1:1 stuff!
The community |OT| for the Switch version is better than any thread that I could make, so I'll just link it here for most useful information:

https://www.neogaf.com/threads/monster-hunter-rise-ot-a-whole-new-world.1597805/
Maybe at least put the PC version trailers in the OP, maybe the metacritic page, you could just copy paste stuff from the Steam page for basic info even :messenger_hushed:

And why is that important??
It's not so much that it's important, it's just that I want Status Atk Up and Artful Dodger (and Earplugs for when Sunbreak inevitably increases the skill memory slots). For Palico's I want the same thing but it's way tougher to get the perfect roll since I also want a specific set of moves. Specifically, I want Healing Bubble, Power Drum and Shock Purr-ison. Actually now that I think about it, Sunbreak will probably add new moves which means I'm going to have to grind a new set of cats.

Rise may have the best maps in a Monster Hunter yet, I can't get enough of them (yet, lol). The views are so good spanning from one end of the map to the other. In the Frost Islands the first screen is looking down at the whole thing (well, not the undeground bits of it), the next is from the middle of the map with the shallow water and the last from the other end with the popos (mammoth beasts) both looking toward the high peak I was @ earlier and if you go back to the first screen you can notice the popos are visible there in the distance (the flying monsters were too but I didn't catch them in all shots, they are obvious when flapping). And yet up close there are tons of details, objects, paths, nooks & crannies which coupled with the new movement options make traversal through them a joy. The scale is great too, things look tiny from afar but for example those bones in the first screen are mountain huge when you climb up them and there are even large gaps between them to jump over, the distance misrepresents the layout detail! I just got a sweet sunset in the first map lighting bits of my armor orange (but didn't catch a screen before the sun disappeared) :messenger_hushed:

God damn every time I start a new character I get up to the Magna weapon and want to upgrade it for the extra raw and get absolutely stymied on the Plate. 15 runs tonight without one. I know it's Low Rank and I shouldn't even piss with it for like 10 extra raw, but this exact thing happened to me in the Switch version too, twice.

Unfortunately, the only way I could ever get plates easily was in high rank so I had to wait to upgrade weapons. Then of course you are stuck with the same issue waiting for a rubies to drop......It could be just me, but I found rare drop rates in Rise to be even more scarce than usual.

MH was the series that introduced me to the desire sensor, so it's no biggie. Usually complaining on GAF about it actually helps it drop, from my past experience. I decided to just skip it for now, I don't like overly relying on the "one size fits all" weapons anyways, so I'll just keep raising my HR and do my best to ignore the nagging in the back of my mind.

I wish that one day a new MH game would properly balance elemental weapons vs. high raw for all weapon types instead of just the fast hitters. I enjoyed my time with Insect Glaive crafting different element weapons to farm different monsters. It gives you more purpose than just sticking with the big dick raw damage stat and ignoring secondary effects that most slower weapons have. I realize nothing is stopping me from building elemental sets but when it's less effective than just going Magna tree for 90% of the game, it makes you feel like you're wasting your time.

He goes to sleep when he’s limping and almost dead, otherwise you can make sleep bombs or craft a quick sleep weapon, he has no specific resistance. I don’t think he can naturally sleep but it would anyway take longer than beating him.

Sleep toads also work, just run over to the blue toad icon on the map, pick it up and pop it down.

They can do, all monsters sleep and iv found him once just curled up asleep before even engaging near the waterfall at the very top left of the map, however yeah your not going to see that often so you might as well just force him to sleep even if he dousent want to.

Just saw the credits roll after 10 hours. Fantastic game. Gonna jump right into the endgame stuff. I liked it better than MHW. The mobility/ traversal stuff is amazing. Also no more stupid tracking quests. Whole game just feels tighter and leaner.
After a certain point, I just want raider rides back. Wirebug/Palamute is great for in combat mobility but when chasing between areas it's just more busywork. Hopefully they add automatic navigation to Palamutes.

But those skills are just for palico\palamute right? Who gives a damn if the palico can dodge or has earplugs??
I just said I did. Palicos can get knocked off their moves which still puts them on cooldown. I'm running double gatherers and I want to make sure Pilfer isn't interrupted.

So why that kakashi ripoff only gave me missions to unlock the third switch moves for SOME weapons? like i have specific missions for 5 weapons but not for hammer and others, what i have to do to unlock all of them?

Any recommendation for a good beginner weapon?
Wholeheartedly recommend hunting horn as a beginner, especially in Rise.

Basic attacks and combos prime you into the rhythm of hunts. You’ll get the added benefit of various buffs depending on which horn you build as well. I find it’s spam friendly to get you going initially, and becomes methodical once you get the beat down for beat downs.

The animations are longer per swing compared to some weapons, but if there’s one beginner tip I’d give, it’s slow down.

From the link I posted last page:

The third set of Switch Skills is unlocked by reaching high rank in the Hub (★4 and higher). After reaching the required Hub Rank, Master Utsushi will give you a set of quests that will unlock the final set of Switch Skills!

The answer is almost always "just keep progressing". Looks like you unlock hammer once you hit 5*.

Yay, got my first nice looking armor. That bird is new, right? Pretty good design for a new beginner monster, I wish there were more like this instead of more aggis and such. I guess Izuchi is new too but it's not that different to them (and who decided its tail can't be cut, I kept trying to do that, lol).

Well, I made Ludroth armor first & I kinda like how it looks (just like Tri's) but it's probably an acquired taste. I wonder if they'll ever go back to separating gunner and blademaster armors ever again, some of the designs here would be better as the former with providing another look for melee :messenger_hushed:

Wroggi is always my favorite early game armor if it's in the current game. That's a nice set though.

Looks like my "complaining on GAF" trick worked for my Magna plate, got one the very first hunt I tried tonight. After the Ramp-up skill, my current CB now has like 148 dmg at HR3. Very pleased.

I'm going really slowly this time, doing every single quest in all categories (even Arena - Yuck). There's no rush, Sunbreak isn't out for a while yet and I have been enjoying getting better and better with CB. I'm hoping to have that last switch skill by thurs or so, so I can do some big axe dunks.

God damn Rapid Morph is such a Quality of Life upgrade for Charge Blade, I've been nailing my SAEDs so much easier with it. Funny too, since I ran a set with it with Switch Axe in the Switch version, looks like my loadout will be pretty much the same.

Anyone know what HR you unlock Flinch Free decos? I looked at talismans and armor sets, and the only thing with it in early HR is the Chainmail body which sucks for everything else.

I didn't play any of the event rampages, do they have any cool weapons/layered armors stuck behind them?
I think some will give you stickers but that’s all, as much as I LOVE Rise, Rampage quests is my least favourite thing from Rise. I’m hoping they don’t bring them back in Sunbreak or at least there would be less of them.

Woot, new armor get. Not really better than my last (actually a bit worse than the best I've made but don't use it cos of its looks, lol) but I think it looks cooler. I don't even really check stats and stuff before getting to HR to be honest, I haven't upgraded any armor either. I'm playing this like it's Tri, lol, I don't even know how the longsword counters (I didn't use it in World, I've been a Greatsword player for the most part). Though I learned to use the wirebugs pretty well I think, except wirebug recovery. God damn are they cool, in and out of combat. I got to the volcano map (nice that it has more underground stuff than over ground compared to the others) and have beat a bunch of different monsters, I'm slowly doing all village quests rather than just those needed to advance and I've also wasted tons of time having fun in expeditions checking out the maps, finding messages and killing a bunch of monsters I don't even need and doing secondary missions, lol. I think I'm hooked like I was hooked on Tri. The returning maps are so awesome. The two things I didn't like the sound of when the game was announced, wyvern riding and rampage, aren't bad after all. I kinda like wyvern riding to smash the other monster and get a bunch of shinies. It doesn't happen all that often in a normal fight so it's not like it interrupts as many times as mounting wyverns to attack them in previous games. And the rampage as I expected is no different to other games' gimmicky elder dragon fights. A bit more involving with all the upgrading and how it's many monsters instead of one giant one but I think it can be a fun diversion inbetween grinding some monster for the gear you want. I was really worried but yeah, I think both systems work better than expected, riding more so.

A lot of what I'm saying might have been obvious from media (or playing on Switch, lol) but I actually hadn't seen anything but some official trailers and some videos I've reposted here, I had not seen what rampage is like before playing it, all I knew is you face off against their hordes or whatever..!

I'm trying to do everything before I move to high rank. I only made a single set of armor, Magnamalo. I completely forgot that I could have used the plate to upgrade his weapon but I realized that after I saved. At least it looks good and is making me breeze through the remaining Village quests.

I just want a texture (maybe model also but whatever if they can make it look fitting with the existing one in the game) mod for the triggered pitfall trap, it's kinda bad, is anyone known for quality mods planning small enhancements like this that just round out the otherwise stellar presentation?

I don’t know why you like the maps but i hate Rise maps compared to World. Pretty shitty that when I’m on my Palamule and need to get to a certain spot I have to get off and wirebug to the top. I’ve been lazy and didn’t get all the wirebug lillies yet, is it really worth getting and not using Palamule?

I’m on HR6 now, almost got my ass kicked by Mizutsune. Fainted me twice and my gear is pretty good. Using Longsword, haven’t used it since MHF2U.

Whats the trick with mounting mobs? I only get to mount the mob once per fight, it sucks compared to World. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

Alexios

Silkbind attacks accumulate like elemental attacks and enable mounting, puppet spiders do so instantly and monster on monster combat easily so it's not uncommon to go back and forth 2-3 monsters in a row, but after being mounted they're immune for a few minutes so you can't spam again.

The wyvern riding training mission teaches most of this. World has similar safeties like each subsequent mount being harder to accumulate from repeated air attacks and also the rider doing even less damage than usual, so if you're doing it all the time it's probably not helping as much anyway.

Kind of like traps also are less effective with each use of the same type, I guess they put safeguards in every relevant system save for actual attacks. I prefer the riding here, it's more fun to use the monsters to bash others or smash into walls rather than just mash A for awesome like QTE bs 🤷‍♂️

Edit: killed my first Magnamalo, that was the first monster with high enough damage to feel threatening, I would have failed if I didn't get some potions just in case. Usually I make do with the support items in this early part of the game. I guess I could flee to make some, or go to the camp but I don't think I've ever used camps in this way in any Monster Hunter that allows this, it kind of defeats the point of preparations, it's not like the games are so tough with few quest exceptions, they're rarely about not dying and more about performing well, monsters are always easy to purely avoid but it's harder to damage them enough so the fight doesn't take ages/you don't time over as a beginner. Back in the demos of Unite and Tri and then the full games after getting the hang of the controls I rarely died but it took longer to achieve a kill and eventually do the same in sensible time.

The real measure of content in Monster Hunter games is the amount of bosses and World had 36 large monsters pre Ice while Rise has 47. Generations is the king with like 70 pre-expansion and over 90 post. More repeats for % drops or a dumb story don't matter, you repeat for the fun gameplay.

What I do is just bring all the monsters to each other and mount each of them once. Do strong attacks to get 3 shinies each, then launch them at each other.
I tried that but they don’t follow unless they’re in rage mode. I lured Rajang out a couple times, boy that monkey is naaaasssssty. I did do your strat the second time. Attack 3 and launching, managed to get some more freebie Rajang items.

nope I can`t tolerate those graphics anymore after MHW. I really hoped Capcom would do more with the visuals than just upscale the portable version....

Yes, how dare Capcom not remake the game designed specifically for switch to appease PCMR folks. Truly despicable of them. /s

Starting to lose steam after just 30 hours, between rampage mode being absolute fucking shite and the almost complete lack of story i don't know how much i'm gonna play this thing...

Also the game is stupidly easy, they really fucking overdone between palamutes and wirebugs...the perfect title for this game is monster hunter rape because poor monsters can't catch a break...

Sunbreak expansion can't come soon enough.

You attack with wirebugs attacks until you can mount them pressing B or with an attack, then you press the square or X to bash them into a wall then rapidly press X or A to regain balance and do the same thing another 2-3 times to knock down the monster.

In alternative, if another monster get attacked by the monster that you are hunting, it become mountable, so you mount him and start using weak and strong attack to do damage and make the other monster mountable.

And yes, i'm with you when you say that both maps and mount system sucks ass compared to world.

Yep the game feels overall lacking compared to world, and I mean before iceborne.

It's really strange too because compared to what they had to do for World, alot more work was already done for them than not for Rise. I mean they obviously had issues with leviathan's and their only solution was to make it so the maps are far less vertical with larger more open spaces to battle in (hence why the maps are more flat than worlds). However doing that while also downgrading for switch shouldn't have taken that long?

When Rise launched it did so in an unfinished state, the "story" was incomplete but Capcom put this down as "additional content" when really the game that we get on PC is what should have launched originally and then Capcom should have supported afterwards. Because right now finished Rise feels like it has far less content than base world before World got its additional content.

I really hope Sunbreak turns Rise into a game at least approaching world. However when I see people saying "this is the best Monster Hunter Ever" I roll my eyes, it's really not, while it's nice to see some of my favourite monsters return, it's also sad to see a game that takes several steps back from its predecessor.

Made it to HR 8 after smashing through Chameleos. I sure do love this Nintendo Switch game, looks great on PC with the higher resolution, frame rate, wide screen support and HDR. I really am looking forward to the next generation of Monster Hunter games for PS5/Series at this point but Sunbreak will hopefully tide me over until then.

I would be surprised if this game had 1/3 of the budget of World. They're 2 completely different games in scope and scale. I look at World as a new branch of Monster Hunter, and this is more of an evolution of the handheld versions, obviously with some of World's QoL's added in.

Sure but... well can Monster Hunter Ever return to the xbox or playstation? I ask this because while it is more popular in the west than ever recently, Japan is still its home turf. Currently thanks to Sony's decision to try and be more modern and Xbox being Xbox, Japan only really has one console right now, the switch and all the limitations that brings.

So im honestly worried that Rise is the future of MH because in its home territory no one else has the market share that would warrant such a big budget title releasing that can't even go on the most popular system is the country.

I'm wondering if there will ever be a World 2 until Nintendo decides it needs to move on to a new generation.

After the success of world, there is no way that the next one is gonna be more like world 2 than rise 2.
