DF: Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves PS5 Tech Review: Graphics Upgrades + 30/60/120FPS Modes Tested

- There are some improvements to the visuals apart from resolution. Increase in LOD distance and less pop-in. The brightness and contrast have been changed and the game looks punchier. Some textures are better too. There are differences in reflections and shading too. Some changes to the motion blur.

- There are 3 mode: Fidelity, Performance and 120 fps.

- Fidelity Mode is fixed 2160p and 30 fps.
- Performance is 1440p and 60 fps.
- 120 fps mode is 1080p and 120 fps. This is John's favorite.

- None of these modes uses dynamic resolution scaling, to John's disappointment.

- Faster loading times. From almost 50 seconds to a couple of second, everything loads in an instant. In backwards compatibility mode you get faster loading times than It was on Pro, but they are still around 30 seconds.

-As for performance:
- Fidelity mode: John hasn't seen a single frame drop in this mode. He would like a 40 fps mode like the one we saw in Ratchet.
- Performance mode: the target is reached basically all the time, just a single frame drop here and there. Testing the secucuence that stressed PS4 Pro the most it runs at perfect 60 fps on PS5.
-120 fps mode: this is the one mode that shows actual drops, but most of the game runs without issue, most sequences are locked at 120 fps, but a handful of specific sequences do exhibit drops (Madagascar chase for instance).

- 3D Audio is supported and is pretty impressive.

- Dualsense is also supported but less exciting. It's good, just not a game changer.

EDIT-------

I'll leave the NXGamer NXGamer analysis here too to avoid opening a new thread.

Fun fact: thanks to PS5 compression both games are now smaller than Uncharted 4 on PS4 alone.

Looks great.

John says he's noticed a few minor visual improvements in both games. Main improvement is higher LODs and better draw distances in all modes. Less pop in. Game also has slightly higher contrast. And a few other minor improvements. Slightly better textures here and there. Better motion blur. Locked 30 and 60 Hz modes in both games, but the 120 modes have some dips in heavy moments.

And much better loading. From 48 seconds on PS4 to just 2 seconds on PS5.

Maybe I'm blind, but I can't tell the difference between 1080p and 4k. On the other hand, the framerate difference is jarring. The 4k looks jerky in comparison.
Depends on TV size and viewing distance if you can clearly see the difference. Most people sit too far from their 4k TV.

No DRS. No 40 Fps mode. No uncapped framerate. I dont get why Insomniac can do these things and ND cant. They are supposed to be more talented. Hell, they even have their own Ice Team.

It will be interesting to see this running on a 2080 which more or less matches the PS5 in standard rasterization. PS5's version of Death Stranding was outperforming these cards so whatever framerate/resolution we can do on equivalent PC cards should be doable on PS5 even though we wont be able to do direct comparisons due to locked framerates that dont drop outside of 120 fps modes.

Purely speculating, but I don't expect 40fps to be much of a thing this generation. I'm happy we're seeing much more 60fps patches/upgrade so far.

I appreciate 40fps being present in R&C, but I still preferred 60 over it. I'd like to look at that update being a test to see how many users are actually using that as an option in their playthrough.

I don't think it's a intelligence issue or an issue with lack of dev know how. I think ND is choosing the options that they have and don't have. At the end of the day, the developer has to want to do something like 40fps before they learn how to implement it.

my guess 60 fps with some drops below in native 4k on 2080, ps5 seems to have some reserve here and as you wrote, lack of 40fps mode and dynamic res make this port quite underwhelming

Apart from the resolution, 60 fps and 120 fps, textures upgrades are not that great. Maybe draw distance, but still. I know they could do a better work, unless you play with a magnifier. Maybe by the fact the base PS4 is already good? IDK. This is showing the engine limitations. No dynamic resolution scaler as well.

Still, Lost Legacy is the best of the series IMO.

They can implement the 40fps mode if enough people ask for it.

I'll probably get the upgrade when I finally play Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy.

Most likely will stick to Performance mode, but may try out 120. If 120 had scaling resolution then I'd play that for sure.

There is some lack of clarification on all of this. This game is the same game, now running as a native APP, but is the same custom engine maded specifically tailored to the base PS4.
Bump resolution, frame rate, draw distance... all those things you can normally make when you get a PC game, maybe on some hidden PC debug mode, but is still a game specifically created for PS4.

And I agree. Is pretty underwhelming IMO.

Nice to see they basically improved basically everything: 1080 @120fps/1440 @ 60fps /4K @30fps options, almost no loading times for the parts that had it, 3D audio, haptics, improved level of detail / pop in distance in models and textures here and there plus other textures more detailed, tweaked contrast and motion blur, etc.

Obviously free always it would have been better, but there's a good amount of work here and $10 seems a good deal specially for those who only had one game and with the upgrade they will also receive the other one.

Sorry if off topic but can I upgrade from just The Lost Legacy PS4 disc into the whole game?
Yes. You only need to have purchased one of the two games, in digital or physical, to upgrade for $10 to get the full collection of both games remastered as native PS5 games.

Mmmm for $10 is ok if it include the Lost Legacy. I´m not convinced, 60fps and 120fps and minor improvements? They should have done a better job and include a 40fps mode like Rachet. After trying that i don´t want 30fps. It should be 40fps minimum or 60fps.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
So only a 10$ upgrade if I have the OG games? Will play again. Should hold me over til Horizon 2. Thank you Sony :messenger_halo:

This is the best kind of remaster for such meticulously crafted games.. upgrade tech, plus little fixes here and there, while not messing with art and look of the game.

Hyped as fuck, these are by far the best controlling TPS i've ever played so gimme that SP gameplay at 60fps and i'm set for years, thank you.

And the upcoming PC port with inevitable shadows options and God only knows what else..

The loading time from 50sec to sub 3 is godsend and magic at least.

I'd wish though that DF would compare the PS5 version to PS4 Amateur and not PRO. Most of us were the low-lifes of PS4A :D

40 FPS is genius.
Sony could make it standard for their own first party games, 4K "Fidelity" mode with a bit extra fluidity, and wouldn't be that difficult when the teams can communicate and collaborate. Isn't this why ICE TEAM exist? To share these sorts of technical known-hows? Sony is wasting it's talents.
