Randy Pitchford Says Microsoft and Sony Have Never Been Competitors, In His Mind

Also this from 2013

US just can't stand when not in control. They need an alternative for everything. That's the reason. Even in a domain where only US companies are present, there is always a smaller alternative to police the bigger one or ready to kick the big one in the nuts when not performing as expected.

They were right, it just was more about mobile devices.

Which literally are computers

I mean who knows, I certainly don't know how much truth is in that. I've heard it several times over the years though. As for tthe OP they are competitors.

Well they were super douchey power hungry culture wise back then too, like coked out nerds or something. So I believe they also talked shit and were petty.

But they saw the decline of what they had a monopoly in, and saw people moving towards spending less time on home computers so also made sense to diversify.

I gave you a "lol" because it's a great meme 👍.

What I'm saying is I've had discussions with Ms employees about this. I won't express what they said just because.

Everything in your quote was way over the top. I'm no armchair analyst but it's pretty obvious where Ms is headed is what I meant. Sorry if I came off as what you said.

I think maybe at one point they may have been leaning that way. Especially after failed XBOX One OG but it feels like there has been a major resurgence. I'll have to take Phil at his public word when he stated that they are already designing next generations and that Cloud isn't ready to supplant local HW yet: only supplement it.

Lol. No. When one can spend 70 billion like it's nothing and the other company can't, there is no competition for the company that's cash fluid as Microsoft. Thems just the facts.

well right now they are behind both sony and nintendo. thems just the facts and has been for most of the time since microsoft entered the industry. microsoft are behind in marketshare by much smaller companies who have so much less resources than them. thats actually a praise point for both sony and nintendo and their efforts.

That would be soo complicated, to negotiate the percentages between Sony, MS and the developers/published it wouldn't be worth it. IMO the only way GP could feature on Playstation is if MS offer a Gamepass Lite containing only first party games. The fully fledge GP will continue, and only be available on Xbox, PC and xCloud. This would perhaps favour Sony as well in this scenario, as they could still offer their version of GP on Playstation with first party and third party games.

You know what?...........this whole time the bolded is what I was envisioning the whole time. I never considered them allowing the 3rd party games on PS+ version of GP.

Ah... I hadn't realised.

I think for that reason, MS have every reason to continue with the Xbox Console. They simply cannot have a version of GP on a console without third party games included. The Xbox console will allow them do that.

It's sure going to be an interesting gen. If MS are really trying to push GP to all devices then buying publishers is really going to help facilitate that.

What do you think the chances are GP Lite will be on PS? At this point i still think its close to nil. I also think that the chances of GP Lite going to the Switch are equally as low.

The ONLY way Microsoft stops making consoles is if Sony agrees to put GP on Playstation consoles with an ironclad contract with percentages that work for both sides.
I only see it happening if Microsoft either buys steam or by some miracle they get their pc store into a position where they are competing with it.

If they can do either, they might perhaps give Sony a console monopoly. Until that day arrives, gamepass wont be going there.

Even a first party only gamepass would kill Xbox. You could buy a PlayStation and have your cake and eat it. That’s not happening.

But we all know hardware is a loss leading exercise. Its not until late gen when they start making a profit on their hardware. Sony made $25.03 billion from its Game & Network Services segment for the fiscal year ending March 31.
The money is in the software, not the box sitting next to your tv or monitor.
But then this plays both ways. Because both companies would be thinking of an exit strategy if having hardware was hoovering up too much money. The hardware gets you locked into the ecosystem, then they get their money back through everything else.

I do find it interesting that people think that after investing 80bn in gaming, Microsoft are now concerned about the costs of hardware.

I think there's a 30% chance of it happening given today's ownership of companies that MS has (I'm including Activision). If they buy 1 more publisher the size of EA, then I'd put that percentage over 66% (meaning a 2 out of 3 chance). If they buy 2-3 publishers the size of Sega and Capcom, then I'd put that percentage at 66% too.

At this point GP-Lite will be on Playstation consoles, if MS decides it wants to spend an additional $50 - $100 Billion on buying more companies over the next 2 years. And at this point (if they've already spent $80 Billion over the last 3 years), why not spend another $80 Billion. And check this out......if a GP-Lite ends up on a Playstation console under these circumstances, that means it will 100% end up on a Nintendo console too. They'd have to give in if Microsoft decided to own Bethesda, Zenimax, Minecraft, Activision\Blizzard, Warner Bros, and EA

Well, yeah. If you're talking about just in gaming. This is true, but still. Sony nor Nintendo have EVER dropped a billion of jack shit since they've been in the game. Thems the facts, too. So, there's that...

Still, you'd think Sony fanboys wouldn't be so up in arms about Microsoft purchasing AB since Sony and Nintnedo are so dominant in this industry. In fact, ask Sony how "dominant" they feel right now. Lol

Why are people like this being so intentionally obtuse?

Sony would happily let MS put games on their platform so long as the games are sold on Sony's store. Same as MS, Nintendo, Apple, the Play store etc etc...

These are called walled gardens and this is how they work.

There is very little commercial benefit to Sony allowing MS to put GamePass on their platform, or any other such GameOS or game distribution service.

MS essentially trying to force them to do so by buying up all third party content producers.

Well they lost access to games they may have played and have always had access to before. Wouldn't you be if It was the opposite as an xbox player? What if sony were the ones who got Bethesda and Activision? Xbox fans would be mad as hell. Also sony and Nintendo don't just feel dominant, they ARE dominant. Over 200m consoles sold between them.

Hope they can hold to it. Should be interesting..

He's not wrong though. If Sony were for sale MS could buy it and send it to the delete bin and it would barely be a blip on their balance sheet. The two are simply not in the same league so any "competition" is merely make-believe.
