DF: Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves PS5 Tech Review: Graphics Upgrades + 30/60/120FPS Modes Tested

Can't say for GPU, but CPU between PRO and PS5 are galaxies ahead.

Is a fucking jaguar we're talking here.

BTW, PRO and base have the same CPU, just oc.
The CPU in the PS4 is so bad that in order to run Uncharted 4 at 60 fps, hackers had to drop the resolution to 540p from 1080p. Less than 1/4 of the pixels for just a 2x increase in framerate for the same pixel budget.

The fact that they didn't include a 40fps mode is utterly mind boggling. ND cinematic games are the perfect use case for 40/120hz. Honestly, I don't get it.

I know Im likely in the minority on this, but 60fps looks weird to me for this style of game.
Keep in mind that in order for them to include the 40 fps mode, they first need to ensure that the game never dips below 40 fps at native 4k. Its possible that the PS5 version had drops below 40. I mean i dont see how. It should easily be running at over 50 fps, but even Ratchet's native 4k mode has dynamic res scaling for when action really ramps up and all those particle effects from ratchets craziest weapons fill up the screen.

People are so much into fanboy zone that forget how good is PS5 CPU and how bad PS4 CPU is.
Extracting perfomance from base PS4 was the best time of gaming.

Maybe there's just not that much of a headroom left? In order for 40FPS to work it really has to be a rock-solid 40, but if the game often spends its time in the mid-high 30s, then there's no point of even trying.

Indeed. This is why we now can play Uncharted running at 120fps on PS5. 4 times the framerate than the PS4 on a $399 console! I remember when we thought we'd only get UC4 running at 60fps on PS5 when it released on PS4, who ever imagined it would actually run at 120fps?

Just got the upgrade, gonna check out that 120hz mode when I get back home tomorrow. Will be interesting, I haven’t tried any 120fps games on my C8 so this game will be the first one that let me experience that framerate.

I’ll probably play the 60fps mode though, unless 120hz blows my mind.

I'll be interested to see what you make of it. I was finally able to try it on Doom Eternal and I genuinely can't see any difference lol.

Yeah, I suspect I’m also one of those people that barely notice going from 60hz to 120hz but now that I have a TV that supports it I guess I’ll check it out.

Not dropped for me yet. Well the upgrade that is. The clock was still on the 44.99 version a out 15 mins ago.

Edit. Saying that jumped on the phone app and its says upgrade for £10.

Why is no one talking about a 50fps mode? All modern sets do that too.

the only consoles on the market that support 50hz output are the Xbox consoles. that's why.
yes all modern TVs can do 50hz but that doesn't mean the consoles can.

if the PS5 had VRR it could of course offer an optional 50hz mode for VRR screens since VRR TVs usually go down to at least 48hz and most modern ones go even lower

I don't think what you describe has anything to do with the CPU. If the CPU isn't able to run the game logic at 60 fps no matter how much you lower the resolution, the game won't hit 60. And if dropping the resolution gets you 60 fps then the bottleneck was clearly the GPU, not the CPU. In the case of Uncharted 4 the game seems to be bottlenecked by both the CPU and the GPU, since even at 540p the game still has a ton of drops. Or maybe the system just lacks the memory bandwidth necessary for 1080@60 fps and that's why dropping the rez gets you much closer to 60 fps, but in any case it can't be the CPU.

This does not seem worth paying for, even at $10.
If you only own one of them, they are giving you the other game for free plus a movie ticket to see the movie! That coupled with the upgrade and you are saying it's not worth $10? LOL.. Seriously, there was work put into this, I don't think you even understand how game dev works or what is involved, you are the type of gamer who always expects something for nothing it seems.

It's not just about running game logic. The CPU has a lot to do with getting the game to run at 2x the framerate. The only reason CPUs havent been the bottleneck in the PC space is because games were designed with shitty jaguar CPUs in mind and then ported to PC where getting the game to run at higher framerates became a GPU limitation.

Purely speculating, but I don't expect 40fps to be much of a thing this generation. I'm happy we're seeing much more 60fps patches/upgrade so far.

I appreciate 40fps being present in R&C, but I still preferred 60 over it. I'd like to look at that update being a test to see how many users are actually using that as an option in their playthrough.

You can't count me in the WAY pro-40fps camp.

I think it's the perfect compromise for this generation of consoles on TVs capable of it. It's a great deal smoother than 30fps... and keeps the fidelity very high. Excellent tradeoff.

Yes, the CPU has a lot to do with getting the game to run at 2X the frame rate, but nothing to do at all with getting the game to run at 2X the resolution (if the rest of the setting are the same, of course, since some settings can indeed have some impact on the CPU). If the CPU is able to run a game at just 30 fps dropping the resolution won't help, it'll still be a 30 fps game.

If you want to play a 30 fps game at 60 fps you need 2X the CPU power and 2X the GPU power. Buy if you just want to play the game at 2X the resolution you just need a beefier GPU, a stronger CPU with the same GPU won't give you a higher rez. That's why many PS4 Pro games run at 2X the resolution while its CPU it's only slightly faster than that of base PS4, because its GPU is 2X faster (a little more in fact). And that's also why while Pro can run games at 2X the resolution it can't run the games at 2X the frame rate unless the game was heavily bottlenecked by the GPU.

On the other hand Series S runs circles around One X CPU and games are usually higher rez on One X. It just has a stronger GPU and much higher bandwidth, which is what matters for higher resolutions. As you can see having 4 times the CPU power doesn't help Series S.

This is easily benchmarkeable in the PC world.

That's a lot of assumptions there. These upgrades just don't seem worth it to me. Other companies have figured out how to give current gen versions to previous gen owners, feels like Sony could too. Of course I'm part of the problem since I bought the GoT Directors Cut.

Yep, I think that just makes it all the more depressing that this is such a lazy cash grab then. DF said the dips in resolution are slight, occasional and essentially unnoticeable. The fact that they can get that game there and it's a proper next gen title and ND can't/won't do the same with a last gen title is very telling.

$10 is a cash crab hahah lol. They put work in to deliver this, far from lazy.

Naughty Dog finally releases a product for PS5. Glad they are getting their feet wet.

I’m sure they don’t want dynamic res making it look too good, as they have a PC release to drop some day.

If its not discounted for "most people" then shouldn't most people pay a fair price as they don't own either game?

No because it's old as shit and basically offers a mediocre experience that is undeserving of being a major Sony 1st party release on the platform. Like I said, anyone taking this position is cucked.

Played last night first couple of chapters. It looks PS4, obviously, but it looks pretty as all Naughty Dog Games and it plays smoothly at 60fps. I need to say I was more impressed when I played The Last of Us 2 at 60fps than yesterday playing Uncharted 4, specially the cinematics of TLOU2 that are amazing even for PS5.

Yes TLOU2, cross-gen or not, is one of the best looking PS5 game.

Choosing between fidelity and performance is not an easy choice. The performance mode is 1440p with no fancy temporal injection upscaling so compared to native 4k the difference in sharpness is definetly visible, in a game with lots of beautiful open space views, having elements far away in distance looking perfectly defined makes a difference.

Meh I'm playing in 1080p/120 on my 65 inch OLED and it seems good enough to me.

I played around with 1440p/60 for a few minutes to see how that was but 4k/30 can stay away.

It depends on what you give more importance to.
For me 120Hz is kinda useless, I've tried it and the fluidity benefit over 60fps is hardly perceivable compared to 30fps vs 60fps where the jump is obvious.
Also these games were conceived to be played at 30fps and they're single player only. We're not talking about a competitive multiplayer fps.
1080p also looks blurred to me nowadays given that I've been using higher resolutions since 2016.

60fps is definetly the most balanced compromise but vanilla 1440p still looks clearly softer than native 4k.
They should have done dynamic 4k at 60fps or 4k 40fps@120Hz refresh or 1440p/60fps with checkerboarding or temporal injection upscaling to 4k.

this should have been a free patch like with last of us 2
even 10 dollars is too much and IT DOESNT EVEN HAVE THE MULTIPLAYER

This has a lot more changes and implementations than TLOU2 though. TLOU2 is simply the PS4 game working on BC mode with a 60fps framerate.
This release has Dual Sense implementation, 3 different graphic modes, almost instant loadings, changes in textures, motion blur, better draw distance, etc.

There's also the fact that if you didn't have one of these 2 games, you get the upgrade AND another game for 10 dollars.

Best thing about this how you can instantly jump from Lost Legacy to U4 via the cards. It’s pretty awesome. You can switch between checkpoints from the 2 games and never see any game menus. 10 euros is fine with me since I didn’t own Lost Legacy before. Cool upgrade.

I started with fidelity mode but I tried performance 60 and I’m not sure I’m coming back.

120fps doesn't do anything for me.
But 4k and 1440p60 modes are great.
I am leaning towards 60fps mode but the sharpness of 4k is really good.
And to be honest - 30fps in this feels really smooth

I played the original a bit a few weeks ago and yep the 30fps in this game is actually pretty great. Still much worse than 60, but it's perfectly playable and you tend to forget about it after a while.

I played a few hours of this upgrade last night and I was surprised how much better it looks. DF seemed to think otherwise but I'm SURE the textures have been improved across the board. The whole game looks much sharper, because it definitely looked a bit soft and blurry the last time I played it.

I'm not sure exactly what they've done but imo it's a pretty nice upgrade.
