PS5 will outsell Xbox Series consoles 2-to-1 this year, Ampere Analysis forecasts

Sony will certainly sell more than Xbox. I guess the percentage is still to be determined.

Right now Sony has a lot of good will and Microsoft has a lot to prove. They may have bought a lot of studios, but the results have not come to fruit.

We shall see.

Didnt Xbox sold 12m units in 2021?
So he means it will sell less than last year? Unlikely
Ahmed estimates they shipped 12m since launch, not just 2021. This group estimated 2:1 global at the end of last year and they predict the same this year. I think it's a safe bet but depends entirely on production.

And MS lost more than triple that amount after the acquisition in equity value (more than 60bn USD down). Seems the market believes that the deal will destroy value for both companies.
What? They don’t own the company for another year. Im A Bit confused at what you are saying?

As a percentage of market cap Microsoft's drop is nowhere near as a impactful. A $165 Billion company losing $20B in value is much more meaningful than a $2.2 Trillion company losing $60B in value. That's nothing more than normal market fluctuation for Microsoft. In after hours trading Sony continues to fall while Microsoft is set to open just a bit higher. The general feeling out there in the market, probably based on the news cycle, is that this is much worse for Sony.

Even with all MS acquisitions I don't see Sony's 2 to 1 sales advantage going away. Sony has an enormous global brand power that isnt as reliant on CoD and others as many think.

Possibly what happens is MS regains some authority in places like the US which were their dominant regions in the 360 era, but that's going to take a while. I think it really depends on how their new stable of studios can compete on quality and appeal vs. Sony's titles.

You are missing the point. It is much worse for Sony because Sony is dependent on the gaming division for its future while MS is printing money with MS Office.

That does not take away the fact that the market reacted negatively for both companies when the news broke and in real terms the shareholders of MS lost more money than Sony's.

However, the perspective I think you have is gaming stand-alone. In that sense MS shareholders pumped 70bn USD into MS Gaming and the market wrote off roughly 60bn USD of that. That is a net gain for MS gaming of 10bn USD. Sony gaming had a net loss of 20bn USD.

I think the fact that their games are now pushing $20 million units (GOW, Spiderman, TLOU and Uncharted 4 are all around 20 million sales) should give them hope that this audience will stick around for those games even after CoD leaves. However, those games coming out once every 5 years does not help. The reason why CoD works is because its an yearly title. it's comfort food for people who are not into sports games. TLOU2 took 7 years. GOW 5 years and now another 4 years for ragnorak. Uncharted is MIA for 4 years. Probably dead. Spiderman 2 took 5 years. They need to expand. They need to go all out and do what Activision did. Get everyone working on these big franchises.

Cory says there will be no god of war after this. This is where the story ends. Come on. This fascination Sony studios have with creating 30-50 hour single player campaigns have turned them into Rockstar. Not every game needs to be a 40 hour campaign like Red Dead 2. Only difference is Rockstar was selling 150 copies of GTA5 while they were working on Red Dead for 5 years.

Sony needed an incredible 2022-2023 to retain that cod audience or give them a reason to invest in the PS5, and they have done the opposite. GOW, GT7 and Horizon 2 being cross gen means people will just buy them on the PS4 instead of camping outside Bestbuys or F5ing Wario for a PS5. Or they would just wait for the eventual PC version.

This is the short term business move I was bitching about for 2 years now. This is what happens when you dont think ahead and put short term profits over your core business model. Now their only selling point is Spiderman in 2023 and thats AFTER the deal is finalized and cod is removed. I really fucking hope they didnt just waste 2 years on a PS4 remake of TLOU and the remake is a brand new game with new cutscenes, Matrix quality graphics, new physics and new level design. If its a Demon Souls style remake, it wouldve been a waste of naughty dog's talent and not enough to keep those 20 million TLOU fans from switching to xbox.

Nintendo will definitely pass 20M considering this is the year people have 2 new Pokemon games, ones just released and fresh and Zelda BOTW2 and that's not even counting everything else from other IPs... let alone the unannounced stuff lol Switch isn't slowing down yet, a big chunk of the market still don't have their hands on it due to shortages by the time they want to get it (It happened to me, had to rely on second hand console which I'm happy with btw).

Regarding PS to Xbox 2:1 ratio... Yeah, no, if that's the case then it still won't matter considering MS still has PC Game Pass, even if COD remains multiplatform, it's already given in a lot of people minds that it won't so many will probable get one of the two based on the ActiBlizz purchase anyway

Sony actually has plenty of stand-alone “mini” titles like Miles and Lost Legacy to bridge the gap between bigger releases. With the success of Miles I expect this trend to continue. Every year they should have very huge titles releasing to compete with the CoD yearly release cycle.

2022-2023 is incredible for Sony…wtf are you smoking. This whole cross gen argument is no sense lol. Why does Sony need “true next gen” when their cross gen efforts look better than CoD which is also cross gen? Again, Miles proved that it was a PS5 system seller despite cross gen

Horizon, God of War, GT7, Spider-Man 2…Sony’s lineup for the next two years is stacked with heavy hitters

We don’t know anything about 2023 other than that, it’s stupid to assume they have nothing. Guerilla apparently has multiple huge projects in the works, we’ve also seen nothing from ND.

Cross gen hurts them here because there is no incentive for CoD gamers who are interested in PS exclusives to go buy a PS5 now. They can continue to play them on the PS4. or go to PC. This is why you dont go cross gen. Now Sony has nothing that sells the PS5 in 2022.

We have already discussed 2023 and beyond. I heard the same hope and dreams in 2021 when you all told me PS5 will never have a year that bad. Well they did. There was no super secret game ready for Holiday 2021. No next gen exclusive. Now all of this is going to come bite them in the ass because their 20 million sellers are not getting PS5 exclusive entries. Exclusives are an ad for your next gen console. GOW and Horizon are ads for the PS4.

Sure there is. PS4 versions of cross gen games are significantly worse. See: Miles.

Why would they stay on PS4 if there’s a much better version available? And eventually there will be true exclusives circa 2023 with Spider-Man. So they will want to transition soon anyway

2021 was not a bad year. We got Returnal and Ratchet. We almost had Horizon but oh well only had to wait a few extra months

Sony will sell every PS5 they can produce, don't you worry.

If you actually take the 12m estimate as a fact, then no, it didn't
Going off the same source, 2021 figure lands at 8.5M.

No, its been confirmed by Phil that they have better then any console they have released, which was the 360 at 10million.

So the series consoles have sold over 10million.

Lol this narritive has been going on a while.

But Xbox has smashed every criticism

Weak console? So they made seriesX

Not enough games

Flight sim, halo infinite, FH5, Psychonauts 2, deathloop.

Best service? Yep gamepass.

Now PS5 is the underdog, sonys fanfair and good will is not going to make up for the quality of there offering.

Xbox has made a lot of headway. That doesnt suddenly make Sony the underdog lol.

I am not some fanboy, so I am not going to get into a dumb argument with you.

PlayStation still is the market leader. Xbox still hasnt hit hard in Europe. This hasnt reverted to the 360 days yet.

I have no I'll will against Xbox, but they still have to turn the market and it hasnt happened yet.

I mean underdog in terms of which platform is the best.
At this point xbox is the better platform because it has gamepass.

I dont use console sales as a gage for success for me as a gamer, the offering is what I care about.

Sony will always dominate but MS is in an extremely good position atm. Sonys revenue and profit has always been surprisingly low (but more than Xbox) despite PS having waaaaaay more sales in everything. I do wonder how Xbox has decent revenue considering their low sales numbers of consoles and games.

Whilst Sony most obviously do sell more consoles, xbox is going in on Gamepass, and it will be available everywhere... so I expect Xbox division to have way more revenue this time around.

Thats been the case for like a decade, you dont need to be an “analysis” to predict that.

I think supply issues has stopped both console selling more. But if there wasnt an issue, Playstation would probably be around 20-25million considering its estimated to be around 17 million sales by now

Lmao these analysts are suggesting that PS5 sales will get a 30% increase compared to 2021 while Xbox will stagnate, what makes them assume that ? Both platfroms have heavy first party games in 2022 (horizon, GOD vs Starfield, Forza).
But it all comes to stock at the end of the day, and here if Xbox orders half the silicon wafers PS5 orders they can make 75% of what sony can make if they allocate 50% of these wafers to series X and 50% to series S.

The_Mike

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
I mean, it's kinda expected.
PS4 has a bigger fanbase, so most of them will naturally move on to PS5.

That's another reason why Microsoft won't stop releasing games on other platforms, such as COD, Minecraft, etc.
Do you even know how many xbox 360 players actually jumped to ps4 last gen because Microsoft fucked the drm and all that shit up?

Crossing fingers for the news going easy on you when you find out like the rest of the world these games will be exclusive.

No one buys a 70 bn company to release multi platforms.

By that feeling of entitlement, then you would provscly demand the games to be fully f2p on your console as well because Microsoft should never get a dime from you.

PS5 is going to sell whatever they can manage to manufacture this year because PS4 won last gen and had lots of great exclusive games. And people want more of that. Xbox on the other hand, had a pretty shitty end of gen in terms of exclusives. Now they have bought lots of studios and they are going to have a flow of exclusive games starting in 2023. But until then it's going to be rough before people notices the games and xbox sales bounce back up.
