Digital Foundry - Dying Light 2 (PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S)

"We not count pixel native anymore because meaningless."

19% of more pixels on series X

Digital Foundry is nothing without their console war bullshit, and everyone on the crew knows it.

What I don't get, the S is 1/3 the power of the X, but the X is only running double the framerate at the same resolution. Surely performance mode can get a higher resolution on the X and PS5.

They likely just capped the resolution at the standard 1080p on both to ensure a perfect 60 at all times.
Both could probably run the game ~1260p at 60hz, perhaps with occasional frame drops.

i guess 1080p 60fps it is. surely they could have got it to 1400p on PS5 and XSX though? its a PS4/XB1 game.

DL2 is still using the same engine from DL1 with some improvements. UE5 was built from the ground up with next generation in mind. Techland is a farely small studio so they probably chose to focus on content over optimization. They are currently working on a PS5/Xbox Series version of DL1 so I hope they are trying to implement low level API optimizations to it and hopefully they will get ported to DL2 (SSD low level API isn't being utilized ATM, 30s to load is too high).

Not according to the game's lead designer.

Smektala shared that instead of using the old game engine they used for the original game, they have their own in-house engine called the C-Engine. At the very beginning of creating Dying Light 2 Stay Human, they made sure they changed their technology.

The question is now, does their day 1 patch adjust any of these metrics or will this game be doomed to the 1080p trash heap for the rest of its days?

I've played over 600h of the first game. I see A LOT of reused assets, animations and sounds (I'm not at all complaining, I'm just stating what I observed). I really think they only improved on the original engine, not created a new one.

Believe whatever you want.
It's not my claim.
Those are the words of the lead designer.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

I never understand why DRS isn't used more commonly. Even first party studios like Naughty Dogs don't use it.

I, too, have to imagine both PS5 and SX have some headroom above 1080p. Just let the game run with an aggressive DRS to 1440p or something. Sure it won't spend the majority of time at that if a game's really that demanding, but it'll be better than a flat 1080p.

They have to make eight versions of this game.
I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until I see the Day 1 patch. If that doesn't change things, I'll be rather disappointed.
Although nowhere near as disappointed as I am about the removal of the grappling hook.

Yet we know which platform has put out the best lookers and it doesn't end with a X.

Looks like he was one of those 🤡 who tried claiming PS5 wasn't RDNA 2.

Lying again, I was actually one of the people saying PS5 was RDNA2 simply because AMD who made the chips said it was.

Let’s be honest guys, it’s completely unfair to attack the series S when we have the big boy consoles delivering 1080p.

it makes no sense that there is such attacks on the series S yet you can’t say a bad word about ps5 and series X?

so we can all agree that the developer should be able to squeeze more out of the bigger consoles for the 60fps mode but can’t see the series s being able to deliver 60fps at say 720p reconstructed?

these console versions arent Great at all. Luckily, tech land is known to show great support so hopefully they can do something with patches.

then make it 60 and make it the definitive only mode.
Don't introduce "hey but there is this ray tracing mode that 30" ... "so of course nobody will choose 30fps but at least you see what you are missing out on when playing 60fps"
I wish there was a way for us to have some influence on developers. Everyone here is pretty much on the same page when it comes to how this dichotomy between modes in reality kinda sucks. Yet this is obviously perfectly acceptable among casuals and among devs. The industry keeps doing performance and fidelity modes+ and failing to aim for 1440p/60 optimized mode and that shouldn't be the damn case.

It's these very companies, Sony and MS that pushed so hard for 4k, then they pushed the marketing hard of "high framerates", yet we keep getting compromised situations forcing us to choose.

Either the consoles are just abject disappointments or¹

These companies never ever just increase resolution from say, 1080p to 1440p. They might make a tweak to DRS where they change one of the parameters but I've never seen a big improvement like that made post launch.

1080p/60fps on current gen is fuckin garbage. Review thread kinda killed some anticipation and now this even worse. Gameshare buddy wants it tho.

Guys really warring over this terribly optimized game? Lol
I'm so fuckin fed up with disappointing optimizations on these next gen consoles. 1080p man. I totally called this btw in the "next gen modes" thread because they were clearly hiding next gen footage.

The fact that loading times are so long on next gen is the only thing that could explain why they couldn't get 1440p workin at 60 fps. Nobody wants to have to settle for this on next gen consoles and its rediculous for AAA devs to think this is acceptable.

It may sound like I'm being dramatic but when the ps5 and Series X have been so heavily marketed as 4k powerhouses, and even "8k" machines (lol), then 1440p at 60 on a cross gen engine like dying light 2 should damn well be doable.

Its not being dramatic. You want what you expected you paid for when purchasing a new console.

These guys worked up a lot of good will with how they kept supporting DL but this is bullshit. Instead of upgrading the first game to next gen, how about doing the new game first?

It makes no sense at all imo

One should not read much into the console versions of this game. The full RT setting aside, we have seen games with much more geometrical detail, significantly higher resolution textures, 60-70% more pixels and great lighting/ shading @60 FPS with both the XSX and the PS5. It is a turd in terms of optimisation.

If you disagree give the reasons. No need to get upset and name call.

Don't know if someone already knew it or if it works with XSX or PS4 and other consoles, but there is a "trick" to play all your games "at 60 FPS", at least on ps5, with a new Bravia TV .

He thought Sony tvs can magically make every game 60fps lol. Its clear he doesn't understand what he's talking about most of the time. Leave him be

The problem is we wait years for these games and some of them are truly great games, like Dying Light 2 probably is. We buy these next gen systems, the games finally come out with crappy modes and that's it. Our one chance to play them at goodbresokution with a good framerate is OVER. So, I don't care that "it's not ps5's fault". This shit keeps happening over and over.

But you're right we now have really capable CPU's and GPU's, at least insofar as being able to run cross gen games well, but devs like Techland won't put in the effort when it probably requires more effort than usual to do. Some of the blame is on MS and Sony though because they could've foreseen this situation and shouldve made sure these consoles had some extra grunt.

1080p 30fps....I'd laugh except that I know this thing is going to run like utter garbage on PC as well, no matter what you throw at it.
