Digital Foundry - Dying Light 2 (PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S)

cant believe ign made those comments about this game. its totally unacceptable, this game is no where near as buggy as cyberpunk.
bought on pc yesterday, makes me wish the consoles hadn’t gone with AMD this time. Their gpu tech is so shit compared to the competition. Yes pure rasterisation is decent but they lack at everything else. These new consoles, while I love them are not bringing true next gen features which I don’t think will change this gen and will only separate PC more and more.

It's really a shame that Dying Light 2 has no Dynamic Resolution in Performance Mode. I'm sure 1200-1300p would certainly be possible at 60 fps.
It's really the wrong way that developers only use fixed Resolutions.

Completely agree, I dont know what kind of work it would take to incorporate it into their engine but I wish they would.

Dam that raytracing church.

Honestly the game looks like low settings vs high settings with raytracing on and off.

I think ray tracing shots just look to dark.
The church is pretty weird. full broad daylight and the inner archway on the church is pitch black. Like cmon.
RT looks great but it's too dark. Shadows would never be this pitch black even in that bus

I'm glad someone else was thinking that.

I kept seeing all the praise and was like ? Even the grass shadows seem a bit overdone.

They look like pictures that you set your exposure for the sky. So I guess technically they look like real pictures with a properly exposed sunny sky.

technically yes.
But also - that's not how reality looks. Maybe hdr helps with that if it's well implemented...

oh wait. There is no HDR in this. lol

It's weird, my TV (Sony x900f) shows the hdr symbol when playing, but there's no hdr settings to speak of?

Edit: just watched the video, turns out the ps5 has some sort of auto hdr setting I guess

No. ps5 does not have auto hdr.
On pc or ps5 you can just enable system wide HDR.
Then sdr content is just displayed in hdr containter. There is no processing or any image analysis done.
Everything is done by the tv. But it's awful because the colors are wrong and black levels are raised. Sometimes can be better than no hdr at all but rarely

HDR is meant to help with that. You used to have to take under, over and correctly exposed pictures and mix them together. Now phones take a bracket of like 14 exposures and does it for you by default. This RT really looks like a perfect representation of a camcorder exposed for the sky all the time.
Edit
Maybe this is a found footage game? Haha

I have a feeling the game will be updated with dynamic resolution eventually.

This developer isn't known for improving resolutions post-launch.
The PS4 Pro still runs Dying Light 1 at the initial PS4 launch setting of 1080p.
The Xbox One X runs the game at sub-1080p, since that's how it launched on Xbox One.
They had seven years to improve these resolutions. They never did.

Maybe this time will be different. I don't know. These current resolution numbers do seem outrageously conservative.

A developer of the game already tweeted they're looking into it.

Just watched the PC vid. Correction, watched 1/3 of it then had to stop.

I always considered hating on Alex essentially almost a meme, but man this guy really grates my gears in his presentations. A machine gun of facts with hardly any emotion or pizzas like with the other guys, even Tom. I don’t hate him for it obviously, that’s ridiculous…but I just can’t jive with the style. Which is interesting because he’s so much more chill in the DF chit chat vids.
I can't stand Alex. Obviously, I don't know him as a person. But I can't stand how much of a nudge the guy is and how he subtly rubs it in our faces, how weak the consoles are. Like, I know they're weak from personal experience do u need to remind me of that while you have a smirk on your face and are making a PC video?

That's nice dreaming. This one hurts more than any game in recent memory. While it does look to be a pretty demanding game, I stand by the fact that there's no excuse for this to top out at 1080p/60 on ps5/x. If CYBERPUNK 2077 could give us 1260p/60 running in ps4 pro mode on ps5 then a native next gen release like this should be at least 1260p (should be 1400p and everyone knows it).

I went and played Metro Exodus on ps5 yesterday to compare and wash the taste of pure salt out of my mouth after playing DL2. DL2 is definitely got more going on environment and npc wise, but Metro has mother fuckinh RT GI, runs at 60 and looks nice and sharp using dynamic res scaling! It's clear that techland should've used DRS. NOBODY WOULD BE COMPLAINING! The fact that the loading times are so long is proof they rushed this on consoles while focusing mostly on PC.

Man do I hope it's true that they're looking into a possible patch. I know deep down though out ain't happening.

Ok not bad. Raytraced shadows and ao should have a much bigger impact on image quality than the typical "here's some raytraced puddles"
They do have a big impact. You might be looking for the wrong thing maybe? I noticed the diff right away on ps5. Problem is who wants to play at 1080p/30 for it? The game must look insane on a good PC.

Yeah, I kind of know what you mean. He's thorough and presents all the facts but I find many of his videos a bit of chore to watch and, dare I say it, boring even though I love all things technical about games. I think John Linnerman is much better at presenting technical videos; he presents them better and he is interesting to listen to. Alex gets the job done but he's no John Linnerman and his obsession with ray-tracing can sometimes be a bit wearing at times. I mean ray-tracing is a nice if expensive effect to have for sure but it doesn't turn a graphically okay game like Dying Light 2 into a 'graphical juggernaut' in my opinion. That's just hyperbole in my humble view. He does come across as a bit of a PC elitist really.
He's def a PC elitist. Dying Light 2 is a really nice looking game though and that's in resolution mode on Ps5. I'm sure on a 3080 it looks incredible with the full RT suite. Not hyperbole.

That's what I'm saying. I'm saying those raytraced effects make a much bigger difference than the typical raytraced reflections you see typically in games

Oh OK my bad. Yes, RT shadows will take any day over reflections. First game I played with shadows is Cold War. They just look so nice with RT. In DL2, with the ambient occlusion too, it makes a huge difference. Gives everything a more realistic look. Too bad it's 1080p/30fps. Too big of a sacrifice. It's just a tease imo.

For now I've stuck with quality. Performance is nice, but looks way too flat, same with resolution.

I’m not sure, they call it 60+fps VRR. Sounds like performance mode only will be unlocked, not the resolution or raytracing modes.
Yes it is just an unlocked mode for the 60fps mode.
It will be interesting to see how much over 60fps the game is running.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Not sure if this means the Performance mode will default to unlocked now. They should add a 60 FPS lock on/off toggle if that's the case.

And fuck it, if there's enough head room to offer higher than 60 FPS at 1080p, that sure as shit means there's enough head room to offer a higher dynamic resolution at 60 FPS.

Not sure why not unlock the other modes, it would be more beneficial to get e.g 45fps with all the fruit than 80 in a mode that already is locked 60.

They are roiling out the VRR patch on Series X.

why was this not in the day 1 patch? can't be hard to have an FPS lock toggle 🤔

every game should have a toggle for all modes that switches between FPS locks.

Control on Series X would be actually playable in RT mode if there was an unlocked FPS toggle. the Photo mode proves how smooth it can look on a VRR TV even at 45 to 50 fps

not only that, but it will also make games automatically future proof, like how you can play the original 360 versions of the Bioshock games on a modern Xbox and run them at a flawless 60fps without any need for a patchm, thanks to a toggle being there from the start
Bioshock 1 even runs really smooth on Xbox One and especially One X

The toggle is indeed easy but the VRR support probably has some work to be done… it is not the first game to ship without VRR support.

Of course just my guesses.

which is a whole nother thing I really fucking scratch my head about... can it be that hard to support VRR? when PCs had that shit for a decade now?

and then those weird ones like Watch_Dogs Legion where the game only supports VRR if your Xbox is set to 120hz... like WTF?

low priorities -> day one patch had to be submitted for cert well in advance of actual day 1 -> this got picked up for the following patch for cert

Ahhh, yeah that sucks. They should unlock it on all modes. Would be awesome just for performance analysis purposes a well.

Game already supports VRR, just that the 30fps modes are too low to benefit and the 60fps mode is basically locked anyway.
Good news that the framerate is getting unlocked though so we get some benefit, hopefully DF will show us how high it runs.

If it doesn't get up to 90-100fps I don't see the point of it.

Hey kids, you want 68fps?

We'll see how far it goes, I think it was A Plagues tale where DF said the unlocked mode was noticeably smoother than 60fps, so hopefully this is the same.

For people who is having poor performances on this game and has a rtx gpu, try going with borderless windows instead of fullscreen, it run better that way.

The game is big and vertical but surely not a looker, no matter how much rtx you put on it.

Ideally they'd unlock all the modes. Of course the question is whether the game can reach 40+ fps regularly in the other modes, otherwise it's not really worth it.

DF gave an update after the framerate was unlocked for Series X in ther DF weekly, basically how much more responsive and smoother it now feels according to John, they seemed to think it generally runs around 90fps on Series X.
Looking at my VRR counter I've seen between 80-120fps when in combat to being indoors.
Very impressive results.

Dying Light 2 segment time stamped.

On average FPS seems to be around 90~100 FPS, which is the sweet spot for 120hz VRR displays. And this is without any specific 120hz optimization, it's just the FPS being unlocked on VRR displays.

For people with 120hz VRR displays, this makes the SX version easily the definitive choice.

You would think DF would be all over this as it's really a first of its kind for consoles, very strange they have just talked about it due to a subscriber question and not done a full console comparison.

It's not the first of its kind for consoles.
A Plague Tale did the same thing. Although its performance isn't quite as good as DL2.
