Current Graphics king on any platform?

Luigi is very impressive for the switch hardware. I think it’s fair to say it’s the most detailed 30fps game on the machine, at native 1080p no less.

I’m excited to see this studio’s switch 2 game.

Ratchet on ps5.

Uncharted 4 or God of war on ps4?

God of war 3 and uncharted 3 on PS3?

Metal gear solid 2/3 on ps2?

Metal gear solid on ps1?
God of War 2 on PS2.
Tekken 3 on PS1.

MGS1 looked really bad lol. RE2 looked better.

There is nothing inaccurate about my sentence in the least. Every Sony bro just hates that I say it without coming up with a claim that's actually grounded in fact. If you think R&C has the tech chops then prove it - and not with cinematic/photomode screenshots. From where I'm sitting, there's nothing tech-savy about the game that makes it look as pretty as it looks.

You see, this is what started my problem with you in the other thread. I'm a newish member on this forum, so it's easy for a reasonable person to look through my history and see that I don't subscribe to any blind fealty for one console over the other. In fact, I recall reaching out to you in good faith for your "objective" opinion on a tech matter prior to realizing how you conduct yourself here.

Most of us in this thread don't have a background in tech; therefore we only have tacit knowledge of what makes for great graphics. Just because we don't have a firm grasp on all of the terminology doesn't diminish our ability to discern between relatively impressive graphics vs. those that are not. Throughout this thread, people have brought up titles from all consoles and PC. Cyberpunk (PC), Ratchet (PS5), Flight Sim (Series X). The vast majority of us, with all of our various preferences for different platforms, agree and understand why these games are being considered without understanding all technical aspects that make them exceptional.

And you, a VFX professional, pop up in the thread and have this to say about a title that has garnered praise from the tech industry for it's graphical achievements:

R&C has all art but no tech.

You are much worse than a console warrior, you're an instigator. It's shameful.

Alien Isolation on the switch looks really good too.
I’ve not played it but based on footage I can’t say i’m impressed, also it’s not native 1080p and with a really blurry TAA.
Talking of which, luigi actually has a TAA that I find palatable.

Ray tracing in metro Exodus

Npc density and how Alive the city feels in the Ascent

But flight sim is on another level, adobo studio is up there with the best in the industry

I'm 100% convinced that some ppl can't look past art style and only recognize "realistic" graphics. It's a shame really, to think that just cause something isn't emulating "reality" that it isn't as impressive as something that it creating it's own style and look. But, I really don't blame them, especially if you're going to be very literal as reality/realistic is the only thing you honestly have an actual reference to... but no less disappointing LOL

The Matrix demo is the absolute king, maybe this year we gonna see this applied to actual games. Otherwise will be the absolute king till the end of the generation
Nothing announced so far even comes close to the Matrix aside from maybe Avatar which will likely get delayed.

Everything else this year is cross gen. Or looks cross gen like Ghostwire tokyo, Suicide Squad and Forspoken.

Starfield might be the only AAA next gen game out this year which is depressing because its fucking bethesda and they typically suck at graphics. Still, the reveal trailer was all realtime and wasnt using any cutscene cinematics so there is a good chance bethesda might have the best looking game of the year. Absolutely crazy turn of events.

lol its the game that made me a hardcore gamer. I love it to death, but the complete lack of detail in Snake and Meryl's face was a huge turn off even back then. Tomb Raider 2, FF games, RE and most 3D fighters that gen had way better looking character models.

MGS2 was when Kojima set a new bar for graphics.

Id also like to nominate Resident Evil remake as the best looking game of the PS2/GC/Xbox era. GC was a beast. We need to bring back pre-rendered backgrounds for linear games. It's not like PS4 era games had destructible environments anyway. its all static bs so who cares if the backgrounds are pre-rendered.

6th gen graphics king is ridiculously hard to choose because damn that was a great generation and 60fps was more common than in 7th gen.

Re4 in gamecube had the best “realistic” graphics though.

Fellas be defending linear environment cut corners in GT7 like "it's a racing simulator, look at what matters the most: vehicles and attention to modelling detail" and then whine about Flight Simulator's 510 million km² map quality upclose where the bottleneck is actually Bing Map scan quality.

So, "look at what matters the most: vehicles and attention to modelling detail"

But still, game environment/lighting looks phenomenal and it is widely considered as a spectacular, pioneering contribution for next-gen gaming industry tech.

Honourable mention: Cyberpunk on PC
Ultra RT completely changes the way game looks.

Oh yeah metro is a looker. Ray tracing in guardians is good too.

I've stopped obsessing over graphics. But from time to time I do find myself looking at the screen and thinking: oh jesus that looks beautiful.

The last time I did that was with Breath of the Wild.

Flight Simulator looks great, but most of the next gen only games have fundamental elements that make them impossible to run on PS4/Xbox

All of them are just graphical features like Ray Tracing, that's not the same as Flight Simulator which has ambition beyond what a last gen system can handle in scale.

Hard disagree. Returnal's dualsense features provided next gen immersion that you simply couldn't get from last gen consoles.

And on the subject of ambition, Cyberpunk's ambition was so great it practically broke the last gen consoles.

You're talking about Dualsense features in a thread titled about graphics......
Cyberpunk runs on my Xbox One X, Flight Simulator does not, probably due to CPU limits.

Ratchet and Clank and Demon's Souls are the best looking games out.

Flight Sim may be more impressive on a technical level however, when side by side the former two simply look better on a TV set and during gameplay.

Unfortunately we are plagued with too many cross-gen games at present.

Riky, this is was the original quote I responded to:

Flight Simulator as it's the only game so far that last gen machines couldn't run, pretty obvious really.

When someone mentions a game that can't run on last gen console, I'm thinking about all key aspects that contribute to the gameplay experience, but I digress.

So you're suggesting that because MFS didn't release on last gen console, and coupled with it's "ambitious scale" (your words), it is the undisputable choice for best graphics to date?

If so, my main contention with your position is that while Flight Sim has great geographic scale, it is lacking scale in the gameplay department. The game's title admits as much; Microsoft Flight Simulator. Going by your metrics, I think many would give the edge to Cyberpunk or perhaps even Demon Souls, however I don't think most in this thread adhere to such a strange rubric.

The Pixar-esque graphics of R&C is certainly very impressive, especially the small details such as the fur.

Amazing attention to detail - just overall.

The thread is about graphics, I've just reminded you of that, so the graphical scale is more important than than what you deem as gameplay, which Rift Apart suffers greatly from if you take that road.
So the variety of a whole planet along with its next gen only nature justifies it for me, at times it looks real.

Too early too tell.

imho by default it would be Sony as they are the only ones that put out several next gen only titles, but until we have next gen only titles from all the major publishers, it will be hard to tell. I believe the usual studios who do a great job in this area, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Kojima Pro, Square, Ubisoft etc will still continue to push that very far when it comes to next gen only, but until all the cards are on the table, its hard to say who would be King when the dust settles tbh.

Anyone new entry can take that crown as we've had a few every gen.

semi OT.

Damn those Ratchet screens look good as fuck, imagine Insomniac doing Resistance 4 next gen only if they grow their team even bigger or something and take on Spiderman 2, Wolverine and R4...we can only dream folks lol

Because of these reasons:

"Only real "Lower than Low" are reflections but it's perfectly clear why looking at how absolutely awful they look maxed out on PC.

On Consoles SSR only purpose was to enrich the perfectly placed cubemaps (tons of them, everywere). Their use it's extremely limited, and tastefully added as you never really notice them. In short reflections on Consoles are working as they should, they never draw attention to them, and never appear/disapper all of a sudden because all they do is add (soft) detail to the cubemaps, or give some life to window's glass.

On PC higher reflections settings are a fucking mess. They look super blocky and ugly and glitchy because they were never meant to be seen that way, and simply destroy any kind of immersion whenever they are on screen.

On Consoles v.1.00 uses Ultra Textures, Ultra Geometry, Ultra Draw-Distances, better Ambient Occlusion than any setting on PC, additional light sources, better facial hair and so on.

I'm really not sure what the hell is up with the AO in v.100, but it's by far the best AO i've ever seen that's not RT.
Every version after that just implements a regular kind of SSAO, totally missing the kind of pre-rendered look AO have in version 1.00, and this includes the PC settings.
It's a whole different beast, no way around it, and while there aren't many comparisons using v.1.00 out there unfortunately, an example can be seen on Arthur's face here for example.

And resolution aside the most notable differences between Pro and Base are these ones:

Pro:

Base:

Of course PC version is still recommended for 60fps (altough not perfect, as some animations are still 30fps), water physics, long shadows, foliage resolution, far object's texture resolution.. but if there was a way to play 1.00 on Series X at 60fps, it would be without a doubt the best version of the game."

And these are base PS4 settings, post downgrade.
You should create your own DF

I'd say the game I continually thought about how great the graphics were was Ratchet and Clank.

Demon's Souls was right there though, but I was more invested in the actual game to be thinking about how pretty it was.
