Horizon Forbidden West: Review Thread |

Well, great reviews as expected. I have no doubts this game is going to be phenomenal. Too bad it's coming out one week before Elden Ring and I have already too much shit to play.

That said, I hope Sony doesn't have any "get more than this metacritic and you get a bonus" in place. It would suck to have one stupid review ruin the studio's day, but I don't think that's the case and the game will probably sell enough to make everyone happy.

That pop-in on PS5 is pretty unacceptable. Maybe this is because the game was built on the ps4? Can't really take full advantage then... Doesn't feel like we're in next gen yet.
Yeah, i suspect that this and god of war were built with the ps4 in mind first. So i expect pop in, loading hallways, ect

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
The first one kind of is 6.5-7/10, but that’s just me.
Correct.

So much acclaim and I'm still not feeling it. Open world fatigue or something, the saccharine colors possibly. I just don't know what it is about it that doesn't speak to me.

Will pick it up one day as an impulse, nothing more, nothing less.
Sometimes it helps to take a break from a certain type of game and then try it out later.

Besides the overreactions I think the point is legit.
Review system is laughable. Everyone can influence the score with a clickbait score to get traffic.
Shills can give 10/10 to the games running on the favorite console and 6.5/10 to games running on their not so favorite console.
The whole thing is a joke.

Just a few days ago a great game like Sifu was punished because of its difficulty.
Next week we'll see Elden Ring with the same non-accessibility scoring 9/10 and 10/10 everywhere because it's From Software and being multiplatform we won't have people trying to drag the score down.
It's a joke.

Then any review that is 'critical' can only be, what, 7 out of 10? Then we are back to the lame 7 out of 10 scale.

I'm sure this game is a good, but safe, followup.

That is not the problem.
The problem is that certain reviews are just fake.
Certain people have already decided before playing they'll give 10/10 to certain games made by certain developers and running on certain consoles just like they have already decided they'll give an underserved low score for the opposite bias or to try to be the controversial opinion that is quoted everywhere and ends up generating a lot of traffic.
The point is that these people actually influence the overall score and it's unfair.
It's not an issue with this particular game, that overall still got incredible scores, it's a general issue with the gaming review system, aggregate score systems and their credibility.

What I was expecting.

I enjoyed the first game but tapped out after around 15 hours. It’s one of those strange games that doesn’t become more than the sum of its fantastic parts.

I’ve ordered a pack of male adult diapers and will be spending the next three months in Elden Ring. This will be a good game to pick up on sale, when it drops to a more sensible price.

Yeah. I was thinking 90+ due to graphics. They even have good writing and side quests.

GameSpot review did highlight about Ubi type bloat.

He said it has too many types of arrows with not very different use for them untill the end.

Seems an odd design choice, that just looks a mess.

I assume this many arrows have a genuine in game use rather than just offering choice?

If they wanted more arrow types perhaps they should have added more bow types that are associated with certain arrow heads.

Less is more for me.

Looks like another exceptional, high-quality game from GG. I went for free shipping like I always do because I'm a patient man, but I need to play it as SOON™ as I can. The cost of two-day shipping is no obstacle.

If I remember from the first game, you could choose which appeared depending on your loadout - there were four slots I think:

So it looks a lot, but there's only three to choose from depending on what bow you're holding, or a sling etc. They were all useful depending on your playstyle (e.g. corruption arrows), or if you wanted to overload machines with the elementals, maybe craft some traps and then let loose with the sling. Left and right on the DPad look like you're choosing which perk to use (dual arrows, impact shot etc).

Looks like it just lets you slot a couple more bows/weapons. Which makes sense as there are more. Originally if you had the tripcaster, blast sling, traps and hunter bow. You'd have to swap for the war bow or ropecaster.

I can't do Ubisoft style open worlds anymore. I fall off them hard once the inevitable repetition and tedium set in.

metacritic just needs to die at this point. its getting bad when even a game at 89 is said to be dissapointing. there are great games that score high 70's that people wont even touch because of the stupid metacritic score. stop letting reviewers dictate your opinion on a game!
I second this. Fallen Order is an AMAZING game that is 79 MC. I'd never play it if I was only led by what reviews say.

Lmao, who would think that's a good idea.

Great scores anyway. Will pick it up after Elden Ring.

I'm still trying to figure out what the hell happened to reviews on The Ascent. Sometimes people are morons. It's not a 6.5 game
Yeah The Ascent sitting at 68 on Metacritic on XSX is a mystery. I’m guessing there were more bugs before the launch, so only the critics got to play the 6.5 version. 🤷‍♂️
It says it all really that the userscore on literally all platforms is higher, even with a decent amount of bombing included.

Not going to comment on individual outlets as they are entitled to their opinion, but it always amuses me that when every single complaint is addressed in a sequel and improved in pretty much every single the game gets a lower overall score.

Looked at some of the reviews that are classed as ‘mixed’ on MC and I find them rather cringey, moreso than the gushing reviews at the top of the scale.

Well now I'm confused. Most reviewers talk about the typical open world bloat Ubi-effect. Is it an excessive icon/mini map game or not?
The map in the first one is out of control with the icons. Luckily you were able to turn off almost all of it. It's still a well made game, but I do think the UI is a mess, and the RPG and crafting elements just drag the game down with unneeded tedium. Never picked up so many branches in my life, and we bagged 20 bags of leaves this year after a storm.

Not loving those screens of the weapon wheel. The first one had way too much busy work and the inventory never should have made it to release so hopefully things are streamlined.

I keep meaning to finish the first then I open the inventory and see a million different items and have no clue if I should keep them or not then nope out.

Gay porn is where it's at.
Sony just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about video game culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in japan where you get a pass if you slap the word "nintendo" in the box art. If you score less than 95 on metacritic, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the genral public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase HFW, nor will they purchase any of Sony games. This is LARGE. You can laugh all you want, but Sony has alienated an entire studio with this.

Sony publicly apologize and cancel HFW you can kiss your business goodbye.

  • Anything related to "the old world" - it's junk, sell away
  • Machine hearts - needed for top level gear, once you have what you want sell away
  • Machine lenses - needed for mid/low level gear, basically useless after you reach the largest settlement quite early in the game, sell away after that
  • Machine cores, Luminous/Crystal Braiding - loot from machines like the hearts/lenses, but not tied to particular machine type. Needed to buy mid/top level gear.
  • Animal skin/bones, meat in various forms, plants other than the healing ones - carry capacity and potions, if you're not interested in crafting them might as stop collecting them
  • Loot from machines - used to craft ammo, what you need depends on your playstyle. If you for example like blowing things up and setting enemies on fire, stock up on Blaze
  • Metal shards - your currency, basically. Needed to buy anything but also for crafting anything
  • Ridge-Wood - one can not have enough Ridge-Wood

Have you quoted someone previously banned? I could've swore I've seen someone else post that.😁
