(Thanks to Topher Topher for taking the time and formatting the text for better reading).

PS5 in Ray Tracing Mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 2560x1440 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 2368x1332. Pixel counts at 2560x1440 seem to be common on PS5 in Ray Tracing Mode.

Xbox Series X in Ray Tracing Mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 2560x1440 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 2304x1296. Pixel counts at 2560x1440 seem to be common on Xbox Series X in Ray Tracing Mode.

Xbox Series S uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 2560x1440 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 2062x1160. Pixel counts at 2560x1440 seem to be common on Xbox Series S.

PS5 in Performance Mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 3840x2160 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 2062x1160. Pixel counts at 3840x2160 seem to be very rare on PS5 in Performance Mode.

Xbox Series X in Performance Mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 3840x2160 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 2062x1160. Pixel counts at 3840x2160 seem to be very rare on Xbox Series X in Performance Mode.

Below are some example pixel counts for certain scenes on PS5 and Xbox Series X in Performance Mode. Note that these figures are approximate and not necessarily representative of how the entirety of a given area will render.

Kabuki Entrance - PS5 2176x1224, Series X 2304x1296
Near Police Station - PS5: 2435x1370, Series X: 2560x1440
Outside Tom's Diner - PS5: 2506x1410, Series X: 2631x1480
Corpo Start Building - PS5: 2656x1494, Series X: 2744x1544
Streetkid Start - PS5: 2062x1160, Series X: 2062x1160

The Xbox Series consoles appear to be using VRS.

FSR appears to be used to upscale the image to 3840x2160 on PS5 and Series X in both modes and 2560x1440 on Series S. The UI resolution is also rendered at 3840x2160 on PS5 and Series X in both modes and 2560x1440 on Series S.

Ray Tracing Mode adds Ray Traced Local Shadows. Ray Tracing Mode also improves Screen Space Reflections quality and also seems to improve Ambient Occlusion quality.

There aren't any selectable modes on Xbox Series S.

In before the meltdowns.

Poor df raising these warriors hopes.

PS5 the version to play.

Stats don't lie.

Not even having the "saviour" that is vrs enabled can bring the series x performance up to the ps5s standard and the crutch of having vrr available leads to poor performance to a good percentage of xbox owners without a vrr TV.

Got to be a reason why ps5s drs works and it maintains its framerate for the most part while the series x goes higher and suffers for it.

I wonder if MS have put out a directive to have a higher resolution at the expense of framerate.

Whaaaat? Tom, wrong again? No! I refuse to believe it.
The examples all show xbox with a higher res, so it's obviously not totally wrong. But Series x goes lower than ps5 and doesnt have a higher limit like Tom claims.

Also, rt Mode, Series X needs a lower res to maintain the framerate. This doesn't tally with the paper specs. Xbox should perform better with rt. I wonder if we'll ever find out what the issues are.

These two consoles are very close this generation. While the Series X seems to run at a little higher resolution some of the time I think the PS5 is probably the preferable version if you don't have a VRR display because it runs a little smoother and people are saying the haptics are quite nice. I don't think the slightly higher resolution of the Series X version will be noticeable by most people. If you have a VRR display then I guess go with the Series X version since the frame drops won't affect you as much. (I'm a Series X owner btw & I don't own a PS5.)

Resolution too? I didn’t see that in the summary. Frame rate for sure though
Only in the RT mode, and it's not by much.

They are pretty much the same.

PS5 is Resolution and Performance king despite Series consoles using VRS, what a dramatic turn of events!

The PS5 has like 0.6fps more on average then XsX..... And the xsx has like a 5% resolution advantage.....

The lower bound in RT mode is higher on PS5 though and they have the same upper and lower bounds in Performance mode

Yes but its about average resolutions, the resolutions which are displayed when playing.

I dont theink theres a clear winner here. They both to close. Its a draw.

Do we know the average resolution outside of the DF comparison (which doesn’t add up with other findings in this analysis)?

You could calculate an average from the counts given here, but just guestimating it would be like 5% higher on xsx performance mode.

Interesting to see VRS be a must in order for the SX to keep up with the PS5.
I find it pretty interesting that VRS is on Series consoles but not PS5, that suggests that it indeed is the hardware based Tier 2 one because if it was a software solution it would probably have been implemented on both.
I expected bigger gains from Tier 2 VRS tbh, unless VGtech simply missed it on PS5 or mistook the Series consoles for having it implemented.

Or maybe there is VRS implementation on PS5 so good that it's not recognizable? I doubt it, thou.

I seriously doubt the Series consoles use VRS and both DF and NXgamer missed it? I think he might be getting confused if it uses FSR.

VG Tech has eyes, Tom from Digital Foundry does not.

XSX drops the lowest usually in areas CPU limited.

Higher and lower bounds the same between the two, it’s entirely possible it’s higher on average on Series X but the numbers we have been given in this analysis of lower/higher bounds indicates it’s the same in Performance and favors PS5 in RT mode.

"Kabuki Entrance - PS5 2176x1224, Series X 2304x1296 Near Police Station - PS5: 2435x1370, Series X: 2560x1440 Outside Tom's Diner - PS5: 2506x1410, Series X: 2631x1480 Corpo Start Building - PS5: 2656x1494, Series X: 2744x1544 Streetkid Start - PS5: 2062x1160, Series X: 2062x1160"

He gives you the figures in like for like scenes.

If I remember correctly, it was said that Dirt 5 used VRS on the XSX and not the PS5 but the result was a blurry road on the XSX

Yes the higher and lower bounds are the same, but we were talking about the pixel counts, and working out an average with them

Ps5 taking this once again if you have a none VRR tv. The stats don’t lie. Fingers crossed CDPR can continue to patch both games and get them up to almost flawless performance. I personally would take performance over a slightly higher res, saying that my leg CX let’s me enjoy the best of both worlds.

im playing on Xbox and it’s finally in a state I’m more than happy with, luckily I’m getting no perceivable signs of frame drops or tearing thanks to my tv.

I am wondering what’s going on with Xbox though. Direct x 12 seems to be really under baked on both pc and Xbox imo. Microsoft should be doing everything they can to get that shit sorted.

Ah, thanks, I missed that part!

Yeah going by those numbers it looks like Series X has indeed higher res in Performance mode.

FSR and VRS were added to PC in the 1.5 update, so yeah VG might be correct here.
Added AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution (FSR) 1.0 algorithm, replacing Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS). On PC it can be enabled in Settings > Graphics > Resolution Scaling. The option is not configurable on consoles.
Enabled Variable Rate Shading (VRS). This feature boosts rendering performance and visual quality by varying the shading rate for different regions of the frame. Available only on compatible hardware.

DF and NXgamer have some explaining to do if true.

I now have more than 10 hours on the PS5 version from an old PS4 save and haven’t seen any screen tearing or frame rate issues. It plays great and it made me reappreciate the game. There are random, rare and short stuttering loading issues in long sessions. I had one crash as well but the game is constantly saving.

I’m at the point of no return and will probably finish it today. For everyone on the fence, PS5 offers a smooth experience with great weapon dualsense implementation and the ambient sound effects - for when Johnny appears - coming from the controller are also a cool mindfuck.

Recommended.
