Lol. I haven't even bought Horizon yet. I know it will be awesome and that I will like it, but I also know Elden Ring is going to CONSUME all my game playing for a long period of time. I'm not sure how long, but a long time. I had pre-ordered Tiny Tina's Wonderland, but that was back when Elden Ring was supposed to be out in JANUARY and I had figured that by late March, I might take a break here and there and play that a little bit. Horizon I don't think had a date at that point. But regardless, there's no way I'll get to Horizon for a while. So I'll buy it then. Elden Ring is probably going to be all I play, along with my friends online, for at least the next 3-4 months. Probably a good deal longer, but 3-4 months is at least a safe certainty. I'm sure all the other games will be great and I will play them. Just not anytime SOON.

My opinion is when its a game in a genre I’ve enjoyed before, and a 9 is the low outlier, they matter quite a bit to me.
Well, as long as you're not playing it on PC but are playing on console, looks like it will be a great experience even with a few bugs. I've seen some indications that the PC version is going to give you some serious problems until the patch some things. Hopefully PC players will get a patch quickly that effectively resolves at least the bigger issues.

The scores for this game were utterly predictable. The Gaming Press's obsession with souls like games + the adoration for anything that is Open World meant that this game was always going to get perfect scores.

Great scores but the OP is already not true.

Why do people start threads like this when Metacritic scores for big games start off as the highest scoring and gradually sink down as more reviews come out?

lol that top five is hilarious. GTAV and Mario fucking Odyssey. Come on guys.

I can understand BOTW and RDR2. They have their moments and strenghts, but an average Mario game and an ordinary game like GTAV? Did anyone actually bother playing that campaign? RDR2 shits all over it. If that game is a 96 then RDR2 is a 196.

Mario Odyssey is a 98? I bought my daughter a Switch for Christmas. I got Mario Odyssey for her to play. I have absolutely 100% no idea how that game is rated that high. As a matter of fact I can't even fathom it. I'm not saying it's terrible, but there is utterly and entirely no way that game should be that score.

Wow. Just wow.
It's the Nintendo bump. The fact that Elden Ring is tied with Odyssey and doesn't have the advantage of the Nintendo bump speaks volumes.

I'd say GTA V is well deserved of that score while RDR2 to me is like.. an 80/100. The first RDR though, I would rate a perfect 100.

To each his own!

Caring about paid reviews is such a 90's magazines thing. And even then i'm not sure people who were old and wise enough cared.

they only show that far but the sorting obviously shows that they calculate further to something like 97.XX and then sort by the number they don't show the public

edit: also since that tweet Elden Ring has fallen to a 96
Them BOTW boys got to it... LOL jk dude

I remember hearing stories of ppl emails email review to change their scores to move the score up... like does it matter that much?!?!? that's crazy.

Journalists review hype, not games. Readers and viewers of reviews aren't the customer, they're the product.

First Zelda and now ER. Maybe Guerilla Games will focus on making a fun addictive adventure over taking so much time on the eye candy to wow the graphics whores. Less makeup, more substance and better melee combat in the next one and maybe I'll buy it. As it is, they are the weakest dev group Sony has besides maybe the devs of Days Gone. Yeah, definitely Bend Studios.

Have you played the new Horizon? If not then stop talking about things you have no idea about.

The game gets a bit tiring after collecting all 500 moons and 300 jelly beans and 1000 ribbons and 5 million grains of sand, remember the game passes that off as "content".

Doesn't sound like I'll enjoy it. The 120 stars was perfectly fine from past mario games. Sounds like they did a ubisoft and made a million things to collect, which I hate.

Reviews matter now?
If they're mixed or disinterested or something like Uncharted or God of War, which were already guaranteed to get good reviews then you can ignore them. But non stop 10s across the board for a difficult JRPG has to be indicative of something special.

Better not to look at gta4 scores if you don't want an ulcer then.

Metacritic is a joke.

gta 4 is one of the best games ever made. Fully deserving.
I am not sure if you were here on it's realeas. that OT was amazing. people hyped with stories of the game. Then the game came out and everyone loved and was amazed by it.
I hated gta 5 just because it was such a 180 from gta 4

It's a good game and i enjoyed it, but it's not even close to the score it has.

Story was trash (niko was charming tho), most of the gameplay and movement was trash, driving was probably the worse of any gta game even if some people liked how realistic it was.

If that thing is a 98, i'm a pornstar.

Gta5 being kinda worse and still having such score only make my argument about metacritic even stronger.

I loved the driving physics, how alive city was,
The story, characters. The game made you care.

It's not for everyone but it was everything I wanted

I was lurking and I'am pretty sure it received a massive backlash actually. (As it should have🤡)

It definitely didn't receive game of the year mgs4 did

at the start is often like this, the come the "hot takes" that eventually chip the score by a couple points.

this being said, i have a preorder so i do hope it's really that good

I can understand people loving the shit out of it, but still not a 98 in the slightest.

Rdr2 was my goty but i fully admit that 97 score is ridicolous.
Objectively of course it's not 98. Neither is rdr2.
These games are full of flaws and a specific taste.
Just like Death Stranding. It might be 10 for me but of course it's not a 10 game :p

This shows there is something fundamentally missing in these scores. If the masses buy this game, many will end up disappointed. Scores should have a component for general likability. They never do, I get that, but this hype thread shows how misleading they are. No way that Elden ring is a more universally liked game than something like Mario Odyssey. Odyssey is something I loved as did my 5 year old. It is enjoyable by people in a 40 year age range where Elden Ring is a niche soulsborne title. Even GOW has a larger appeal. I think there is some delusional fanboy hype playing into these scores.

The highest rated game should translate into a game enjoyed by most people and I can't see that being the case with this game. Instead we have a game reviewed by fans who inflate its rating because they are already in love with this type of game. I wouldn't doubt that they fought to get the chance to review it too. Like, boss, can I get paid for 100 hours playing this instead of Horizon. Similarly I bet there are reviewers on the staff who don't like this type of game that asked not to have to spend so much time on it. This is perfectly fine to get a score that works for the fans, but it wrongly implies universal praise and that is not true.

I want to see several people who are not soulsborne fanboys review this game. If they all agree that it is amazing and are converted then that means so much more than having a bunch of fanboys agreeing that it is the best soulsborne and incorrectly signaling that it is the best game.

there is so much wrong with this post I don’t even know if I can cover it all.

you should have just written that reviews are bullshit and a universally acclaimed game will still not be liked by some people.

Should a 5 year old be able to enjoy the godfather? Can someone hate a classic film, book, album, game? Of course they can.

if the reviews for this game are bullshit they are for every game.

Its not possible quantify what most will like, only what the reviewer itself likes.

As a non Souls player.... let's say I buy into the hype of Elden Souls and grab it on PC. These games play well with mouse and keyboard? Or is it more of a controller thing?

It’s pretty cool to see this game crack the top rated of all time list, being a new IP and all.

Also, hard disagree with some folks on here regarding Mario Odyssey. That game is insanely good.
So true, after playing both the galaxy games and Mario 64 recently, Odyssey just blows them away, they just feel so restrictive in sale and scope compared to Mario's latest adventure, but the plot thickens as I believe they both Elden and Odyssey are now tied for first place, and on Metacritic it's Elden and Breath of the wild at 97...

Of course the Nintendo bias and paid reviews will be touted buy people oblivious to the glaring double standard, ie a game I personally like reviews are on the money, a game i don't like biased paid reviews. ;)

Must admit it's a great time to be a video gamer and just too think Elden will be running on my Series X on my C1 OLED in all it's HDR glory very soon. :)

Play both games at the same time. Some of one then when u need a break play the other

Sekiro was weirdly okay with KBM but I would still never recommend it for Souls over a controller.
